Introducing On the Farm & Background Basics: Farm & Barn

May 12, 2012      Nichole Heady      725 Comments

Whether painted red, shiny and new or falling apart and leaning to the side, there is a timeless beauty about a barn.  Life on a farm brings with it thoughts of down home cooking, fresh air and sunshine, caring for animals and growing things with our own two hands…..things that take us back to basics and things that make us smile.

New-Product-Details

On-the-Farm-die

A perfectly executed collection of farm-themed images, perfect for creating projects with the vintage farm look that is so popular now.  There are two "background" blocks that will be wonderful for "grounding" the farm animals. The first is compiled of two halves. A "sunshine/sky" portion that could be stamped in one color, and then the "hills" in a second color. The barn silhouette is scaled so that it can be added to this background as well. The additional background block is a distressed frame that will coordinate with many of the animals and can be used horizontally or vertically. There are several animal silhouettes that can be mixed and matched in so many ways with lots of sentiments, both punny and every day. There is even a rustic checkered background strip that can be used for borders and more!  I really enjoyed designing this set and I hope you enjoy using it in your creations!

To help showcase the amazing amount of versatility in the set, here are the unique sentiments included in On the Farm that allow you to create for a large variety of occasions…

  • Just Hatched (Baby)
  • If at first you don't succeed, saddle up again. (Encouragement)
  • Congrats on your new roost. (New home)
  • Herd it's your birthday. (Birthday)
  • Hope you're feeling jut ducky. (Get Well Soon/ Speedy Recovery)
  • Hogs and Kisses (Love You)
  • Take Note (Just Because)
  • Farm Fresh (Just Because, Gift Tags for fresh produce)
  • Howdy (Hello)
  • Best Wishes (Wedding, Any Celebration)
  • Many Thanks (Thank You)

The Details:

  • On the Farm will be available for purchase on May 15th.
  • It will retail for $24.
  • On the Farm contains a total of 26 images.  The checkered border measures 5" x 1/2".  The assembled "sunshine & hills" background block will measure 1-3/4" x 2-3/8".  The distressed frame measures 1-3/4" x 2-3/8" as well.  The pig measures 1-1/4" x 3/4".  The rooster measures 1" x 1-1/8".  The horse measures 1-1/4" x 1-1/2".  The chicken measures 3/4" x 1".  The duck measures 7/8" x 1".  The cow measures 1-1/2" x 7/8".  The "Farm Fresh" sentiment measures 5/16" x 1-5/8".  The Pure Country label measures 3/4" in diameter.
  • A coordinating die will be available for sale separately, retailing for $5.  This is a single die (6 shapes wired together).  The die measures 3-3/4" x 3", animals average 1-1/4" wide individually.

This new background building set I designed gives you all the tools you need to recreate the rustic farm look that is so popular in paper crafting now.  The chicken wire can be bold or subtle, depending on the ink colors you select.  The barn boards can be used as a border or you can fill an entire background.  Whatever you decide, this set will definitely infuse your projects with a style all its own.

Now that I've made all of the formal introductions, let's get on to the projects!

Inspiration
My first project today was inspired by the Pioneer Woman and the style/colors she uses for both her blog and cookbooks.

Best Wishes Rooster Card
I really like all of the bold and bright colors together and the idea that even farm animals look FABULOUS when paired with flowers!

Chicken wire plate
I started by impressing the Pure Poppy card front with the new Chicken Wire Impression Plate.  I love the detail of the little "twists" in the wire, making this pattern look so realistic.

Flowers
The flowers & leaves are all from the previously released set, Daydreamer.  The five petal flowers were stamped with Summer Sunrise ink onto Harvest Gold cardstock.  The other flowers were stamped on Summer Sunrise cardstock using Orange Zest ink.  All of the flowers were dotted in the centers with a black pen (American Crafts) to help carry through the other black elements on the card.  The leaves utilized Simply Chartreuse cardstock and Ripe Avocado ink.  All of the floral & leaf elements were cut  out by hand with scissors and layered in two of the corners of the card front.

Rooster
For the central focal point, I die-cut Fillable Frames #1 from white cardstock and stamped it with the coordinating frame image in True Black ink.  The rooster from On the Farm was stamped in the center with the same color.  I added borders of True Black Gingham Ribbon across the center of the card and layered the frame on top of them with foam tape.  As a last detail, I also added True Black buttons tied with button twine.

Sentiment
I stamped the sentiment with Orange Zest ink onto a small strip of Summer Sunrise cardstock and trimmed the end with pinking shears.

Down
Everything was mounted onto a True Black card base.

Farm Fresh Card
For my next project I decided to use the new Shape Up Series: Barn die to create a unique baby card.

Barn board
I die cut the barn from Soft Stone cardstock and stamped it with the rustic barn boards from Background Basics: Farm & Barn using Charcoal Palette ink.  This background stamp is SO fun to use and really makes your cardstock look like realistic wood, complete with tiny nail heads.

Farm fresh

I created a sign to be hung above the barn doors from Aqua Mist cardstock die-cut with the new Rounded Label die.  I stamped the coordinating frame from Summer Camp using Hawaiian Shores ink.  I added the sentiment from On the Farm with Hawaiian Shores as well.  I pierced two holes on either end of the sign and threaded them with floss, pulling the ends around to the back of the barn.

Doors open
When the doors are opened, an adorable little scene with a fun pattern are revealed.  I added die-cut Chevron Stripes die-cut from papers included in the Aqua Mist Pattern Pack (stripes) and Melon Berry Pattern Pack (bitty dot).

Birds closeup
The duck & chicken from the On the Farm die were added in white cardstock.  The birds are standing on top of a small banner cut from Melon Berry cardstock, stamped with the "Just Hatched" sentiment in Melon Berry ink.

Interior
The interior of the card was embellished with a few more Chevron Stripes, die-cut birds as well as a sentiment from Inside & Out: Baby, stamped in Hawaiian Shores.

Down
I love this Shape Up Series die and I am really looking forward to playing around with more color schemes, themes and overall designs!

Many Thanks Rooster Card
This next project is a simple little card that could easily be mass-produced as part of a gift collection or just to keep on hand for your own personal use.

Chicken wire
I stamped the Classic Kraft card front with the chicken wire image from Background Basics: Farm & Barn using Classic Kraft ink.  I love the little details incorporated into this particular background image.  It really adds a lot to a card.

Rooster
For the focal point, I die-cut Fillable Frames #10 from Raspberry Fizz cardstock.  It is stamped with the new Crackled background image using Raspberry Fizz ink.  I also added the coordinating frame image from Fillable Frames #10 stamp set, added with Scarlet Jewel ink.  The rooster was die-cut from Scarlet Jewel cardstock using the On the Farm die.  It was stamped with the smallest dots from Polka Dot Basics II in Scarlet Jewel ink.

Sentiment
For the sentiment, I cut a long strip of Scarlet Jewel cardstock.  The sentiment was stamped in VersaMark and heat embossed with White Filigree Embossing Powder.  I trimmed the ends of the strip with pinking shears and folded the strip into a free-form banner  of sorts.

Down
Two white buttons flank either side of the focal point, threaded with Dark Chocolate baker's twine.  The entire card front was adhered to a Dark Chocolate card base.

Saddle Up Again Card
This next project is the perfect thing to send along when someone needs a bit of encouragement.

Horse
I started by stamping the sunshine/sky image onto white cardstock with Summer Sunrise ink.  I added the barn just at the bottom of the horizon line, using Pure Poppy ink.  I stamped the hills onto a separate scrap of cardstock using Simply Chartreuse ink.  I trimmed them out with scissors and added them under the sunshine/sky with foam tape.  The horse was die-cut using the On the Farm die from Smokey Shadow cardstock.

Down
The sentiment was added to a strip of Pure Poppy cardstock using True Black ink.  I had left the white mat for the focal point block a bit long, and tore the lower edge of it, curling the paper up slightly with my fingernails.  The Classic Kraft card base is stamped with the checkered pattern strip from On the Farm using Classic Kraft ink.  I also swiped the edges of the card front with Fresh Snow ink.

Herd its Your Birthday Card
My last project for today is a fun birthday card that would totally work well no matter who the recipient is, male or female.  I started with some spring Moss cardstock and stamped it at a slight angle with the rustic barn boards from Background Basics: Farm & Barn using Simply Chartreuse ink.  I trimmed two blocks from it and edged them with Tea Dye Duo.  I adhered them onto my card front with the directions of the angles coming to meet a point in the center of the card.  LOVE this look and will definitely be doing it again.

Focal
The focal point started by stamping this rustic frame with Fine Linen ink onto Vintage Cream cardstock.  I added the cow silhouette image from On the Farm with Dark Chocolate ink.  For a more "rustic" look for the cow, I smeared my ink pad across the cow, rather than tapping.  I like the way this changes things up just a bit.  The focal point was matted with Ripe Avocado cardstock.  I also created a small "prize ribbon", like what would be given out at a country fair.  I stamped the 100% Country label from On the Farm with Dark Chocolate ink and punched it out with a circle punch.  I then matted it with Ripe Avocado cardstock and trimmed it out with pinking shears, following the edge of the label.  I added two small scraps of Simply Chartreuse Bitty Dot ribbon underneath it and trimmed the ends to form a point.

Sentiment
The sentiment was added to a strip of Vintage Cream cardstock using Dark Chocolate ink.  The end of the strip was trimmed with pinking shears and distressed a bit with teas Dye Duo once again.
