Introducing Boy Basics & Ad Sense

Today is a very exciting day here at Papertrey Ink!  This could possibly go down as one of the biggest blog posts EVER!  I have quite a bit to introduce to you, so let's get started!

Lisa's headshot
First, I have a new set from Lisa Johnson to share with you!

Ad Sense is a wonderful retro style set that can have o many amazing applications!  It all starts with a large frame which can be filled with a variety of sentiments and phrases that hinge from things that might have been found in ads long ago.  With the coordinating dies, there are many layering possibilities as well!

The details.

  • Ad Sense will be available for sale on April 15th.
  • It will retail for $15.
  • Ad sense contains a total of 18 stamps (1 large retro frame, 15 sentiments/phrases and 2 decorative elements)
  • A coordinating die set will be available for purchase separately for $7.  The set includes two dies, one for the large frame and one in a starburst shape that will coordinate with a few additional images in the set.  The frame measures 3-1/2" x 2" and the starburst measures 1" in diameter.

Heather's headshot
Heather Nichols has designed a perfectly appropriate collection of patterned paper this month that will fit in well with so many of our new sets.

This basic patterned paper collection is perfect for men and boys alike.  With a combination of both subtle and bold patterns that can be paired together or used alone, this collection holds lots of opportunity and possibilities!  This collection includes the colors Blueberry Sky, Enchanted Evening, Pinefeather, Kraft, Dark Chocolate and Smokey Shadow.

The details.

  • The Argyle Socks patterned paper pad will be available for purchase on April 15th.
  • It will retail for $8.
  • The Argyle Socks 8×8 patterned paper pad contains a total of 36 sheets, 6 sheets each of 6 patterns.
  • It includes the colors Blueberry Sky, Enchanted Evening, Pinefeather, Kraft, Dark Chocolate and Smokey Shadow.

I have a few projects using this set that I am extremely excited to share with you!

Gratitude Card

This first card uses some of the amazing paper in Heather's Argyle Socks colllection to set the tone for a color scheme of Blueberry Sky & Simply chartreuse.

I die-cut both Ad Sense dies from Kraft cardstock.  The large frame was stamped with the coordinating image in Fresh Snow and then filled with two sentiments from the set in True Black.  The small sunburst was stamped with the coordinating image from the set in True Black as well.

Focal closeup
I stamped a scrap of Blueberry Sky cardstock with Fresh Snow and Polka Dot Basics II, tearing across the top and bottom of the strip.  I adhered it to a block of Simply Chartreuse cardstock which I outlined with black pen.  I added a sentiment from Inside & Out: Thank You underneath the frame image.

Sentiment closeup
The starburst I die-cut earlier was added to the top of the frame with a foam dimensional.

I love the vibrancy of this project and how it could be used for nearly any kind of recipient.

Feel Better Card
Now for something a bit more vintage.  I used another one of the papers from Argyle Socks as my basis for this card.

Focal closeup
The frame was die-cut from Vintage cream cardstock and stamped with Pure Poppy ink and the two sentiments added with True Black.  I die-cut Mat Stack 3 from Dark Chocolate cardstock and stamped it with a coordinating image from Mat Stack 3 Collection using True Black ink.  A thin strip of Men of Life paper (red) was added on top of the Mat Stack 3 layer.

Star closeup
The star (from Boy Basics: Simple Circles) was stamped with Pure Poppy ink and punched out with a 1" circle punch.  I added a starburst from Ad Sense to the center of the star with black ink and finished the center with a single black rhinestone.

To help ground everything, I outlined the exterior of the patterned paper mat with a black pen and ruler.

Next on the agenda is our EXCITING Boy Basics lineup.  We've had hundreds and hundreds of requests over the last few years to create some images that are perfect for boys… from toddlers to teens.  The stumbling block for us in developing things like this has been how to make a stamp set or two versatile enough that it would have wide appeal.  So we decided to do things a bit differently and pick a few of the most highly requested themes for boys and create small $5 mini sets embracing them.  That way, it's easy to pick and choose the images you would like to add to your collection, without having to purchase one large set.

For today's post, I have assigned each of the Design Team gals one of the Boy Basics sets to work with.  Each set will be highlighted individually today with a few of my creations added to the mix.  Let's begin, shall we?

First we will begin with Boy Basics: Game On.  This is a little set I designed as a fun take on one of the most popular hobbies for boys…video games.  It is done in a clean, graphic style that makes it so easy to work with.  Paired with some fun font combinations based on those used in many video game logos, you will get lots of mileage out of this set!

The details.

  • Boy Basics: Game On will be available for sale on April 15th.
  • It will retail for $5.
  • Boy Basics: Game On includes a total of 9 stamps (2 controllers, 1 directional control button, 1 rating box icon and 5 sentiments)

Best Game Card
First, a little card that could be used to celebrate an achievement or serve as encouragement.

Focal closeup
This Wii style controller was stamped on Kraft cardstock with True Black ink.  The edges of the kraft block were accented with the corrugated image from My Hero My Dad using VersaMark ink.

Labels closeup
I created some small labels using the rated block and one of the small sentiments.  The directional control button image was stamped int he center of a star that was punched out with a star punch.

Sentimetn closeup
For the sentiment block, I stamped Vintage Cream cardstock with lines from Mini Scrapbook Series: Library Ledger using Spring Rain ink.  The sentiment was then added with True Black.

Red paper from Men of Life paper pad was the perfect pop of color behind both of the focal point elements.

Epic Year Card
Now for a birthday card perfect for a gamer.

Focal closeup
I stamped the X-box style controler with Enchanted Evening ink onto Hawaiian Shores cardstock.  The rustic circles from Grunge Me were added on top of it using VersaMark ink.  One of the paint splatters from the same set was added to the corner using Fresh Snow.

Sentiment closeup
The rated block was stamped in Enchanted Evening as well and trimmed out with scissors.  The sentiment was added beside it on white cardstock using Enchanted Evening ink.  The sentiment was trimmed into a strip with one end cut with pinking shears featuring a little stitching accent.

The card background was accented with our Sunshine Impression plate.

You Rock Card

Stamping splatters
I started by stamping these large paint splatters from Grunge Me with True Black ink onto a white card base.

Stamping star
I die-cut the large star from Seeing Stars die collection using Summer Sunrise cardstock.  I then sponged Terracotta Tile ink around the star to give it a graduated look.  I stamped the rustic circles pattern from Grunge Me all over the star with Fresh Snow ink.

I die-cut the guitar from white cardstock and stamped it with True Black ink.

Sentiment closeup
The sentiment was added to the star with black ink as well and the interior of the letters was highlighted with a gold Copic Spica pen.

Leap for the Sky Card
I created an adorable card that could be used for encouragement for a special little guy in your life.

I started by die-cutting the frog from Simply Chartreuse felt and stamping it with the coordinating image using Black Noir ink.

Frog closeup
I die-cut the lily pad from Ripe Avocado cardstock and stamped it with Background Basics: Gingham using VersaMark ink.  As a fun little touch, I added google eyes to the frog as well.

Stamping background
For the background, I stamped Boy Basics: Simple Circles in an alternating pattern onto Ripe Avocado cardstock using VersaMark ink.  I then followed up with two small images from Dot Spot, adding them to the center of each circle with True Black ink.

Sentiment closeup
I love this little sentiment from the set!  It is such a wonderful companion for the little frog!

Here's what Melissa designed…

Tweens & teens will love Boy Basics: Skater Dude.  It is perfect for so many boys who love skateboarding, but the set can also be adaptable to snowboarding.  The authentic-style board designs paired with some sk8er lingo sentiments will be a go-to set for creating cards for your guys!

Flip Kick Card
I created a fun birthday card with a perfect touch of skater grunge!

I die-cut the skateboard 3 times from white cardstock and stamped them with the rustic circle pattern from Grunge Me using a rainbow of colors.

Focal closeup
I was then able to add one of the board patterns from Boy Basics: Skater Dude on top of the colors using black ink.  I added a punched out star (from Boy Basics: Simple Circles) to the center of the middle board and accented the center of it with a small patterned star from Boy Basics: Skater Dude.

Sentiment closeup
The sentiment embraces skater lingo and has a wonderful font pairing that looks right at home with the boards.

The Kraft background was accented with the grid pattern from Mini Scrapbook Series: Library Ledger and the corrugated strip from My Hero My Dad using VersaMark ink.

Stoked Card
Now a little something that would be appropriate for either skaters or snowboarders.

Focal closeup
The large splatter images from Grunge Me were heat embossed with White Filigree Embossing powder.   I die-cut the skateboard from Ocean Tides cardstock and stamped it with one of the three board patterns in the set, which was heat embossed as well.

Sentiment closeup
The sentiment was heat embossed and then accented with a few of the dot lines from Grunge Me.  I also added a punched star that was decorate with the rustic circles stamp from the same set.

The edges of the Ripe Avocado card front were roughed up a bit with my fingernail, with the lower right corner being curled up to help grab the eye down near the sentiment.

Am loving how Grunge Me and Ad Sense works so well with all the projects today. My favourite card though has to be your last card (Totally Stoked) using the Skater Dude mini set with Grunge Me – just ab fab!

I am so excited for this release. I don’t make cards for guys very often, so I don’t have much in my stash geared towards them. Of course, that means when I *do* need to make a more masculine card, I struggle. Thank you for offering these $5 sets in such a wide variety. I love having more of the smaller sets to choose from!! The rocket, frog and circles are DEFINITELY going in my cart (and the guitar and skater set might just make their way in as well…..)

These sets are just amazing! I thought they would be in one or two big sets, but being able to purchase them separate, by theme, that’s just perfect!!! I totally love the teens stamps, the skateboards and the rock on guitar!! Most of the teens I know, love music and skating and these would be just perfect! I totally fell in love with the circles as well, these can be used for just about anything!! Love how you are selling more smaller sets, this way you pick what you like even more. Though I still love the big sets as well! πŸ˜‰ The only thing I miss with the smaller sets is a sticker for a cd case… I do store themin cd cases as well, and I don’t mind at all finding a case myself, but I miss the sticker! Maybe you could make a general ‘back’ sticker for the series you are designing now, like just saying Flower Fusion and not the numbers and then put in a sticker per set? This way we could combine the stickers on the cd case ourselves, with just what we bought… I know I would love that! Or maybe sell it separate? I would add a sticker to my cart for sure, I just love matching everything and organzing and now there’s info missing… I know, I’m an organizing-freak, but I think there are more like me, hi hi!
Looooooove this new release!!!!! Great job for all of you designing!!!
    Hugs, Wendy

Gosh I bet you need a week in bed after that marathon post! I’m giddy with all the possibilities and I may even get over my fear of grunge to have a go with these sets. Fanrastic that they are offered in mini sets too.

  • 31

I am just getting into cardmaking and can’t really afford to get all the dies that I would love to get, but will build them up slowly! I love all of these…

I was looking at the skater dude die and was thinking that you could easily turn that into a sentiment frame stamp set and also it totally looks like a bandaid shape, you could make a get well soon stamp set, with a bandaid stamp, lol!!

I am working my way up to making my first PTI order, but better check out the postage to Ireland, that is always the killer!

My fave is definitely the out of this world rocket set though – so fun!
Thanks for the chance to win, hugs, Ruth S

    Laura Boyd says:

OMG! Love all the boy sets and I don’t even have a young boy in my life. I have friends that do, so that is a good excuse to buy them, right:) I have to say one thing that really stuck with me was the monkey face in the rocket on Dawn’s card, so adorable. There are several sets that I will be adding to my collection, and of the course the die that I love so much. Thank you for making these smaller sets. I hate to buy a big set for only one thing, or not buy it because I feel I won’t use it. But these small themed sets are awesome!

  • 43

Said in my best tween voice impression,…”AWESOME!!!” πŸ™‚ This is such a great mix of cool & fun product. I, especially, love the splatters with everything!

  • 44

  • 45

Really appreciate that we can just pick the themes we will use Nichole – I’ve often bought a large set knowing some stamps will never get inked. This month is an epic month for sure and right now can’t decide – but really really love the Simple Circles…. and Ad Sense…. and the Grunge….. and – Oh I can’t decide!!!

    Barbara says:

eeeeeek! masculine stamps are my favorites. the no nonsense yet fun, clean yet messy, defined yet grungy look is just fabulous! i will be buying all of these sets & dies with time, but the circle border, ad sense, rocket ship, trucks, frog and skater pieces are first on my list…i might as well just get them all now! lol the new patterened paper is delicious too! can i say how much i love your $5 stamp set options too?! i can buy themed sets with coordinating sentiments instead of a larger set with a group of stamps i might never use, the $5 sets allow me to buy just what i need…without the guilt! pti rules!

    Linda says:

I love the $5 sets! There is such a variety in what you are offering for the boys, that yes- – – I probably wouldn’t have bought a larger set since some of the concepts just wouldn’t fit my circumstances. Picking and choosing is fantastic! And i am so in love with the dies!!!!! My favorite card shown today is your frog card. I didn’t want the circle set ’til I saw what you did with the background on this card. LOVE IT!

  • 68
    Brooke says:

WOW!! I literally had to sit down with a glass of iced water and read this one in peace! When you do boys/men you really do it don’t you. It’s fantastic. I’ve never been so much into the girly girl cards and have always found it hard to find good stamps, etc. that work well for boys. I’m hoping my hubby can double my spending budget to fit in all these goodies. And what a great idea to split them up into mini sets, like you say we can get what we need to target the special men/boys in our life.

Love Ad Sense too. Lisa really has captured that “times gone by” advertising campaign look. Love it!

  • 69
    Elena says:

The Ad Sense is definitely awesome, and I actually like almost every little boy set…I love that they’re only $5 and have matching dies! You’ll be seeing a few of them in my cart tonight πŸ˜‰

So much to look at and “oooh and aaah” over! This release is just over the top; it feels more like an anniversary celebration. I just LOVE the Boy Basics Line! They are all great, but Jessica’s super cool embossing will have be buying the Simple Circles. Dawn’s monkey in the rocket card will defintely have me purchasing Out of this World and Nichole’s frog card will have Frog Hop hopping into my shopping cart. I love frogs and monkeys, and to use one of my favorite phrases, “those are just too stinkin’ cute!”

What a perfect way to package these sets. Since boys are so different, I love the idea of small sets to match to your guy’s interests. The little frog with the fly is so cute!

  • 289

Talk about an action packed post – just like a boy!! Wish I had this right now! My little guy has two birthday parties this weekend : ) Love it all and thanks for the chance to play!

All I can say is WOW! I missed the first couple of days of previews and got to take it all in at once. LOVE everything! I really am impressed with all of the boy stuff. All of it so awesome. You and the design team have made some really fantastic projects with all of the sets. My absolute favorite is the Frog Hop. Being the frog lover that I am, that set and die is at the top of my list. He is so adorable and I love the wiggle eyes. Gives him cute personality. Thanks for all of the inspiration this week!

    Melissa Flieg says:

What fun sets for boys of many ages. I love that you decided to go with several $5 mini sets so that we can pick and choose which we like the best. I have all girls but still need some boy cards for friends and relatives. This will give me so many new choices. Everyone’s samples are fabulous.

    Kelle Williams says:

To quote the “Skater Dude” set, I’m totally stoked about the sets previewed today. When I saw the sneak peeks, I was excited by some of them but concerned about breaking the bank and the “practicality” of the sets. My hubby is a “gamer” and my mother-in-law is gaga about frogs. I’d love to have these sets for them, but probably wouldn’t use them a lot otherwise. Now, with the affordable prices, these mini sets are totally reasonable and I can make some great custom projects for some of my favorite people. Oh, and thanks so much for creating the “Fly Away” dies! I bought that set with my father-in-law in mind and it will be so nice to be able to die cut the planes. It’s like you were reading my mind this month and even I didn’t know what I needed! Love, love, love the little felt froggie!

  • 301

Wow! I am LOVING Boy Basics, especially Game on and Skater Dude! I have two boys, ages 9 and 11. Such difficult ages to make cards for, as most everything “out there” is too baby-ish for them (according to them). These sets are just perfect! After a little needed time to recover from my last Papertrey Ink order (it was big!), I will most definitely be purchasing Rock On, Skater Dude, Grunge Me, and, of course, Chevron Stripes (well, probably more than than, but those are what’s on top of my head right now…lol). What a FABULOUS release!

  • 302
    carol says:

Indeed, you left me MORE than inspired… I am so excited for these releases. I guess I am especially excited about the grunge, rock -on and skater dude sets – they work so well for those teenage boys on my gift list but they also work for any kids, age 7 on up – they just appeal and thanks to all the creative ideas, I know I could make they feminine or masculine – edgy or just fun. Really, I have needed these sets and as always, they are so well executed!

  • 303
    Erin Taylor says:

I love each and every one of the these sets! My favorite has to be Boy Basics: Game On! My son loves the Wii (and all things Super Mario Bros.), so this set will be PERFECT for him!

  • 305
    Jennifer S says:

Wow!! I think it would be easier to list what I am not in love with! Which would be nothing! I love all of these little sets today. I really like that you broke these down into $5 sets. That way everyone can buy just the images that speak to them. I will be getting them all, whether I win or not! I think I am most looking forward to the Rock On and Skater Dude sets, although Simple Circles is amazing, too! What a great month!!!!!

  • 306

Squealing with delight here! I LOVE all the new boy stuff! Nobody has anything like this, everyone forgets about the boys. And the Rock On is soooo cool, though I will be getting it for my guitar playing GIRL, lol! Thanks so much for a fabulous release!! πŸ˜€

    see mary stamp says:

Love the vintage look of Ad Sense. That will be fun to play with. I am very excited about the Boy Basics line up and will probably end up getting all of them. I appreciate the price point on these so I can add them to my collection a little at a time. Love Heather’s trucks, and I think the frog and rocket designs are too cute – but that makes sense since they are grown-up tiny treats images. Since my grown-up boys are still gamers (as is my daughter-in-law) and my youngest loves to play guitar – you know Game On and Rock On are high up on the list too. Beautiful projects across the board from the design team. Every set (that doesn’t make it into my cart this month) will be on my wish list!!! Hooray for PTI.

  • 311
    Pippa67 says:

  • 347
    Chris Hertel says:

On the skateboard one, it’s very cute, however the term is wrong. It’s called a “kickflip” one word. (you have “Celebrate your day in a flip kick way). If my son wasn’t a skateboarder I would never have noticed this. You have to kick the board up first to flip it. (sorry)

  • 348

Oh my, with 2 grandsons this release is for me!Love the frog set, have been using the little frog for almost every card I make for Josh and he’s a senior in high school! Have to have the Grunge set, want the retro set also. Since my 2 “boys” are college age the skate board set, music set, trains, well, I could go on and on. We have been through each and every stage with them. They all fit!

Plus…I am SO going to buy that grunge set…every time I see those stamps used I get excited about making cards.

  • 355

All of today’s projects were beyond inspirational. You and the Design Team have created projects for the men of all ages in a way that makes me feel like I have to scraplift them, all of them. After going through all of today’s posts and projects my coffee is definitely cold. The two sets I have to have right away are Frog Hop and Skater Dude. Frog Hop will be used for an album for my daughter that has been in the works for years-she is almost 14. Skater Dude for my 16 year old son and the many cards he still likes me to make for his friends. I have 7 nephews as well and this months offering, offers me so much for the men in my life. Thanks.

  • 393
    Bev Leeson says:

WOW! What AWESOME Collections and a n awe inspiring idea to create them this way. We all know how hard it is to find Stamps for Male Cards and as suggested it would be awfully hard to cover Infant to Man in one or Two sets. I believe these single sets will do really well and at such a small cost for so much product, I know I’ll be buying many of these. Also having the Dies to work with them makes them so much more Creative. The work you have all shown is Amazing and I can see these designs covering all ages. Just what the Market has been needing for so long. Congratulations and Many Thanks for all your hard work to Inspire us. LOVE the Patterned Paper Pack too. Just so Boyish for all ages and looks. Many Thanks.
    Kind Regards,

Maybe now I won’t dread having to make a boy card!

nor do you or I have enough time to read and write what could be said for all these sets and the amazing projects…
just know I am overwhelming WOWED!
This months release has gone to another level…
and though with sneaks really thought I was going to “catch up” this month…
    but WOW!
All of you are just amazing.
Note* love-of-my-life-man-that-I-married was even wowed with this one. When showing him samples from yesterday and explaining why I have to order…
your Train Tracks blue print card caused he-who-never-has-an-opinion when it comes to this stuff to say…
    “THAT’S COOL!”

It’s so AWESOME to see such wonderful sets for boys!! It’s really hard to find images for my tweener boy and each of these fits him perfectly (especially the video game set). I love how you kept them each at a reasonable price because they are each going on my shopping list!

Finally a set for my 9 year old son! I buy many sets with my daughter in mind and struggle to find sets appropriate for my son and cards for his friend’s birthday. Game On is perfect for my son. Many of the other sets being release would be great for my son too!

Everything is so cool! That frog is adorable, too. Strangely, I’m also really excited about the skateboard die; I can see so many applications for it beyond a skateboard. Another fabulous release!

Boy basics is a series of set I have been longing for! I have 4 sons, and quite frankly they require me to keep my stamp collection very non-girly! I may have 2 flower sets total! I am so excited for Rock On, Game On, and Skater Dude for my older 3 boys, age 11, 8 and 6. They will think that I really am a cool mom when I pull these sets out. They may even decide that they can stamp along! My 3 yr old loves everything to do with Buzz Lightyear, and I know that Out of This World will be right up his alley! Thank you PTI for amazing boy stamps!

Wowee! This was supposed to be my light month since I only have girls, but I think I’m going to spend just as much as every other month after seeing this post. I love all the $5 sets and coordinating dies that give me some “boy” images to play with for the occasional card without having to invest a fortune. πŸ™‚

    Lea Lawson says:

Oh wow….first off, your samples are just amazing! I am loving each and every one! The other thing that I am loving…is that these are coming in smaller, less expensive sets!! That is such an awesome thing…letting us pick and choose the ones that are our absolute favorites, rather than just lumping them all into a boy themed larger stamp set that is more costly. I am so excited about this part, and I can’t wait to see each one in it’s entirety!!
