Introducing Autumn Abundance

August 12, 2009      Nichole Heady      753 Comments

As I said during sneak peek week, I have been exploring many new (to me!) techniques and skills within the graphic design program that I use to design the stamps we bring you each month.  One thing in particular I have been focusing on is hand-drawing with my Wacom tablet.

I drew a lot when I was in school.  High school especially.  I was in the Accelerated Art Program and got the opportunity to explore lots of advanced studies, one of which was drawing.  When I was 15, one of my favorite assignments was selecting a small kitchen utensil from several scattered about the art room and creating a technical drawing of it.  I chose a pair of antique egg beaters.

I loved mentally dissecting all the pieces and figuring out how to translate them onto paper with pencil.  I recently stumbled upon the drawing while going through some old papers and it now prominently hangs (appropriately) in my kitchen.

So, this story brings me to today, as I am rediscovering this love I have for the mental dissection of detailed objects that surround us in our everyday lives and turning them into small works of art.  I used this process while creating the set I am about to introduce to you today, entitled Autumn Abundance.

Autumn Abundance is a set especially close to my heart.  It contains three stoneware pitchers, each filled with a variety of autumnal bouquets.  A few beautifully done sentiments round out the set making it perfect for all sorts of projects.

The details.

  • Autumn Abundance will be available for purchase on August 15th.
  • It will retail for $15.
  • Autumn Abundance contains a total of 12 images; 3 pitchers, 1 accent image and 8 sentiments.
  • ETA: The pitchers & bouquets are NOT separate images.  Each pitcher is already filled with fabulous blooms to allow for quick and easy stamping.

I decided to establish part of the basis of today's post on our new envelopes (see post below!).  We have been working SO long on these and I am excited to show you a few fun ideas using them!

Colored sunflowers

My first project uses one of my favorite images from the set, a pitcher of beautiful sunflowers.  The pitcher was colored in using my Enchanted Evening Copic Trio, the Sunflowers with Summer Sunrise Trio (centers Dark Chocolate Trio) and finally, the leaves with Ripe Avocado Trio.  (All of these trios are available for purchase on the Papertrey website).  I also outlined the entire image with a bit of T1.

Take Care Ensemble

(click on above photo for a larger view)

This project actually has a little bit of a unique twist.  I altered one of our new 5.5" square kraft envelopes to have two separate pockets.  One for a card, sending someone get well wishes, with the other holding a tea bag, prefect for sipping while resting up on the couch.  The front of the envelope got special treatment so that it would coordinate with the rest of the items.

The label for it was created by heat embossing one of the borders from Borders & Corners Oval onto Ripe Avocado cardstock with White Filigree Embossing powder.  I then punched it out with the coordinating Giga scalloped oval punch.  I just ADORE using my Borders & Corners sets for labels like this.  So quick and easy!

Marking envelope for stitching

I made my card first and inserted into the envelope.  I marked about 1/8" away from where the edge of the card fell with pencil.

Stitched envelope

I then used that pencil mark as a guide to know where to start my stitching with my sewing machine.  I just zipped one straight stitch down the length of the envelope.

Tea Time pull out

The small "pocket" contains a cardstock tag affixed with an herbal tea bag.  The "Tea Time" image is from Tea for Two and it is heat embossed with White Filigree Embossing Powder.

Take Care Card

(click on above photo for a larger view)

The larger pocket holds the card.  The basic design of this is super simple, but I think striking all the same.  Polka Dot Basics II was stamped in the background directly onto the Enchanted Evening card base using Versamark ink.  The sentiment was heat embossed onto a strip of Ripe Avocado cardstock.  The final step was to trim the sunflower image down and adhere it to the cover of the card.  This project was SO fun and easy to make!  (What, what was that you say?  Oh!  Your fingers are itching to color in your very own sunflowers!  Well, don't worry, you won't have to wait too much longer!)

Colored leaf bouquet

Next up is this celebratory autumn leaves & acorns bouquet.  Now if that doesn't make you think of fall, I don't know what would!  Note the sentiment.  Doesn't that just make you want to swoon!  Love the fonts.  Love the layout with the line separating the two.  SO fun!  There are several different sentiments contained in this set that are similar, so you can use them for several different occasions!

Celebrate Everyday ensemble

(click on above photo for a larger view)

This card is an A1 size so a matching A1 Kraft envelope was in order.  I created a small seal for the envelope by stamping a small acorn cluster (which is also included in this set) onto white cardstock and punching it out with a circle punch.  I even inked the edges of both the card and envelope with our Vintage Tea Dye Duo ink.  In this photo you can see how well the envelopes match the cardstock!  We really made sure to orchestrate nothing but the best when it came to these new envelopes!

Envelope liner inserted

As a fun extra I decided to line my envelope with some of the Autumn Abundance patterned paper that coordinates with this set.  Lining envelopes like this really adds a touch of class and sophistication to your finished product.

To make it EASY for you to line ALL of our envelopes in the future, I have created a FREE download that contains liner templates for all 6 types of envelopes we are now carrying!

Download Papertrey Envelope Liner Templates

Print the templates onto cardstock, cut them out and save them for future use.  Then whenever you want to line one of your envelopes, all you have to do is pull out the coordinating template, trace it onto the back of your patterned paper, trim & adhere inside your envelope!  Easy Peasy, as Mish would say!!!

Celebrate the season card

I kept the card here super simple too.  The bouquet was trimmed down, leaving a bit of extra space at the bottom for the sentiment.  Rustic Jute Button Twine was wrapped between the two and tied off in a knot.  The entire piece was adhered in place with foam dimensionals onto a kraft card base.  Once again, quick and easy but still managing some major impact.

Colored mums

Next is a pitcher of mums.  David and I have always enjoyed going to pick up three or four pots of mums each year as part of our fall decorating routine.  They serve as a sign to me that autumn has officially arrived.  The pitcher here was colored with Pure Poppy Copic Trio (with the stripes colored with our Scarlet Jewel Trio).   The mums were colored with Summer Sunrise and the leaves with the Spring Moss Trio.  Once again, a bit of shading with a Copic T1.

Circle punch

After coloring I decided to get out my handy 1.75" circle punch (which will be available through PTI on the 15th).  Sometimes I forget that using a partial image like this can have just as much impact, if not more, as a full image.

Curving stamp

I wanted to curve one of the plain text sentiments along the circle I punched out.  One of my little "tricks from the studio" is to place my block on top of my finished image and place the sentiment along the curve of the circle by looking down directly through the block.  Works like magic every time!

You're the Best Card

(click on above photo for a larger view)

Here's the completed card.  It's just a bitty 3 x 3 creation, prefect for including with a gift, a lunchbox note or just a little something for someone at the office or whatnot.  The image is matted with a scalloped circle mat created by our new EK Success Scalloped Circle Punch.  Scarlet Jewel Bitty Dot ribbon and In Bloom (ripe avocado) paper create borders along the center.  The In Bloom strip was punched with one of Martha Stewart's Border punches.  Bitty Box Basics (pure poppy) is used for the background layer.

Lace edge envelope

One of our new little 3×3 Stamper's Select envelopes was the perfect fit.   To dress it up a bit, I added a strip of the leftover "lace" border to the edge of the flap.  IT made for a really elegant touch!

I hope you enjoyed my presentation today.  And I also genuinely hope you will feel the love put into the creation of these images each and EVERY time you use them!  I am so anxious to see what you create with it!  Here's your chance at winning our Autumn Abundance prize package!

My favorite things about autumn are the colors and cool whether. I think it is the most beautiful time of year, and I think that your cards adn the desings in this set capture much of the beauty in this season. The bouquet of leaves is my absolute favorite part of this set. I am fascinated by leaves and love to put leaves in pumpkins or other vases during this time of year.

    I never liked fall because it meant winter and snow were coming. But then I met a cute boy and started dating him in the fall, and it became a magical time for me. He is now my husband, and every time I feel that crispness to the air I am reminded of how much fun we had together in the fall! So, I would love this stamp set because I love my fall memories! {And the new envelopes look fantastic!}

Love this set! I have to admit, the picnic baskets & this are not what I would ordinarily be drawn to. But, you do such a great job of putting images together & using the perfect touches, like the little acorns in with the leaves, that I will be adding this to my collection (which also includes the baskets, btw) 🙂

I love the idea of having sets that allow opportunity to colour in using copics. I have just started copics and am still practicing with the shading and whatnot. But it’s hard when you don’t have good images to colour in. These are perfect for that, as you have just shown us. What a wonderful set!

Without a doubt my favourite thing about autumn is the colours. This is something you’ve captured perfectly in your acorn card – it’s just stunning! Unfortunately for me, I will have to wait a few extra months until autumn as I live in Australia. Luckily for me the flower images in this set can be used for more than just autumn-themed cards. I’m already envisaging mothers’ day cards, get well cards and ‘just because’ cards in my mind!

This stamp set is just gorgeous. I know so many people who would appreciate a card like the ones you designed. However, my coloring skills are not as good as yours, but I would have a lot of fun practicing. My favorite part about autumn is checking out all the local pumpkin patches. Watching my four year old son having a great time climbing on hay bales, and petting the animals really brings autumn home to me.

Oh, there are so many reasons I want this stamp set! Firstly, the images you’ve shared here, Nichole, make me think of my mum and aunts -birthday cards will be SO easy for them all with this set! Secondly, here in Australia, we have Autumn during March-May, so Easter is in Autumn and this set would make darling easter-themed cards and pages. Thirdly, it’s my favourite season because I was married in Autumn. I simply must have this set!

As much as I LOVE summer here in the Pacific Northwest, I also love the change of the season into fall. The cool evening breezes and the falling leaves are so exhilarating. And there’s something about entering a warm, cozy house with cold, rosy cheeks that makes me feel like a little girl again. I think the image of the leaves and acorns captures that feel perfectly, as do the warm colors you used. Beautiful!

As always, your samples are so inspiring! I’ve loved the samples using the Copics and coloring, yet have hesitated to buy some of these markers and give it a try. You make it seem so easy! I love the patterned paper selections for this month as well. Unfortunately, I want everything that you have previewed this week – it is all great! And even though summer is still here, you have me thinking about autumn!

I love using pitchers as vases. Right now I one on the kitchen table filled with daisies and another on the coffee table on the screened porch. I love the vase of leaves. Living so near the Smokey Mountains, I love to hike in the autumn to shuffle through the fallen leaves on the trail and view the mountains in the distance in their fall glory. I even enjoy all the leaves falling in my lawn which require raking. There is such beauty in nature, and you’ve captured that beauty in these images.

Autumn is my favorite time of year. Partly that comes from the weather change and beautiful colors, and also from it being back to school time (as a teacher, it is time for me to have a fresh start with energetic new faces!). I love the look of the vases with leaves/flowers. This would give me great practice using my colored pencils as I continue to refine my coloring and shading. Thanks for the chance to win.

I love fall colors, but I know the winter will be setting in soon, so sad, as are winters are so long here. This set would be good for a first time copic person, like me. Gosh, Nicole, I love all the sweet images you’ve shown us so far. The Autumn Abundance is especially nice. Living in FL, we don’t really have Autumn. Winter is our growing season so we’re kinda backwards.

Living in KY, though, I loved going to the pumpkin fields, hayrides, the awesome leaves, (not so much the raking of them!) the sweet smell of hay, the transition to rich colors in our home, comforting meals, warm sweaters and a fire on that first cool night…sigh.

The fist project, the sunflowers in the pitcher brings back such a vivid picture of the way my parents used to always display flowers, my Father especially. He almost never used a conventional vase, always a stone or silver pitcher.
Autumn is without a doubt my favorite season and my family’s too. My Daughter draws pictures of pumpkins and our dog playing in swirling leaves and talks about the colors and crisp breezes. I married the love of my life in the fall, October 14th in Asheville NC in the mountains with all the colors around us. I love to be outside in the fall, it is a calm and reflective time of year.

This set is perfect for all the beautiful Fall colors that are just around the corner. Fall is such a beautiful time of the year, but so short-lived. On a limited stamping budget, I hate to invest alot on such a short season, yet I’m always so ready to celebrate it. Thanks for offering a smaller, lesser expensive set, that is still gorgeous and combines both great sentiments and images. The papers look so pretty! I really liked the colors used in the Enchanted Evening piece–they look beautiful together. The stitched envelope is another great idea. Here are a few of the things that stand out in my mind about Fall. The Fall air is so crisp, the trees are filled with bouquets of gorgeous color and when the leaves gently fall to the ground there is that fun crunchy sound you get when you walk through them (or jump into them if you are young, or young at heart):) I love everything about the Fall! Good Morning,

Autumn has always been my favorite time of year. I live in California and Autumn always brings about a refreshing change from the heat and dryness. For some reason, we seem to come together more as a family – comfort food, raking leaves – kicking them about and starting over again! School is back and we have more church functions. Even the interior of our home is refective of this glorious time of year -earth-tones, warm and cozy furniture. This stamp set is totally reflective of all this and it will be a favorite of mine! Thank you for your extraordinary art work and your inspiration! Warm and Toasty Regards, Melodie

Autumn means Bluejays gathering acorns from oak trees, Squirrels and the black walnuts, my beautiful hummingbirds leaving me again, stacking up the pumpkins for a “display”, the smell of our first wood fire, the last of the sunflowers being devoured by the goldfinches. This is fall to me…a rather melancholy time all in all.

What I love most about Autumn is the the changing colors of the fall leaves, crispness in the air & anticipation of the holiday season.

My family has a house in the north Georgia mountains and the fall is my favorite time to visit. I know the leaves are changing and they are pretty, but I really love the cool night air and the first opportunity to build a fire and the crunch of fallen leaves when we take walks. This summer my parent built an outdoor fire pit and I have a feeling it will be my new favorite thing.

Autumn has been bittersweet for me for a long time. I love the colors, the crisp air and the traditions that come in the Fall, like visiting the local country fairs. It’s also a difficult time as it marks another year that Mom has been gone, she died in an accident when I was just 17. It was a beautiful crisp Fall day; the “perfect” Fall day. So, it’s a season that brings a lot of memories and emotions for me!

I love the smell of woodsmoke and the vibrant colors of the falling leaves. Oooh – and hot soups, chili, squash, pumpkin muffins and meatloaf – comfort foods!

I love, love, love autumn. Maybe it’s because I equate it with the start of school, but there’s just something about it that seems to promise new beginnings, not the least of which is the start of the holiday season. I can definitely see myself using this set to make menus/place-settings/etc. for Thanksgiving dinner.

I love that the flowers are already arranged in the pitchers!! Fall is my favorite time of year. Pulling on a light jacket or sweater in the early evening to go for a walk through fallen leaves, picking some of them up to dry and frame, the scent of smoke from someone’s hearth, apples, hot apple cider….mmmmm.

Autumn is my favorite time of year. The trees and flowers burst forth with brilliant colors, as if knowing it’s their last show before winter settles in…I love the colors of Autumn, the smell of smoke from wood burning in peoples fireplaces and the evening glow from windows, as I walk my golden retriever; Quincy before we settle in for the evening. Yes, Autumn is my favorite time of year!
