5- Introducing Just Hatched!

February 10, 2008      Nichole Heady      1,190 Comments

The products I am about to introduce you to today hold a very special place in my heart.  Several months ago it occurred to me what an incredible blank canvas plastic hinged easter eggs are.  I wondered if there could be a way to make them elegant and versatile in the papercrafting world.  And that is how the idea of our Just Hatched stamp set & box came to life.

THE BOX:

021008_egg_boxThis little box may look simple, but it has several attributes that make it a joy to work with.  It is made out of a very sturdy chipboard which is covered in a high quality matte white paper.  The box is white even on the interior so it is easy to maintain true color when painting it.  The matte white covering also gives you the ability to stamp directly on the surface with out any preparation work.

021008_egg_box_openThe box has a simple insert that has holes for six eggs.  It is a sturdy insert that can handle quite a bit of weight.  The insert is designed so that it is very easy to cover with designer paper as well.  The box measures about 4×6 inches and 3.5 inches tall.  The insert is removable for even more possibilities.  The box will be priced at only $4each, and of course, available exclusively from Papertrey Ink.

021008_painted_boxEaster is obviously something that comes to mind first when thinking of what exactly to do with this box.  But what about babies?  To begin my project for today, I painted my box pink.  I was very careful to paint the outside and the top rim only.  The matte surface of the box takes the paint beautifully!

021008_lining_piecesI just adore lined boxes.  They have such a boutique feel.  I decided to line my egg box with custom stamped designer paper that I created with Beautiful Blooms.  The easiest way I discovered was to cut pieces of paper for each individual side. I have included measurements below so it will take all the guess-work out when you line your own box…

BOX BOTTOM LINING:

  • 2) 6 x 3-1/4 inches (long sides)
  • 2) 4-3/16 x 3-1/4 inches (short sides)

LID LINING:

  • 1) 6-1/4 x 4-3/8 inches (top)
  • 2) 6-1/4 x 1-15/16 inches (long sides)
  • 2) 4-3/8 x 1-15/16 inches (short sides)

021008_finished_box_lid_2To finish off the box, I added a strip of the same patterned paper I created for the lining, to the outside cover.  I pierced holes along either side of the strip and followed up with a pink marker to achieve faux stitching.  I also adhered the ribbon and label.

021008_side_of_boxI continued the patterned paper strip and ribbon down the sides of the box as well.

THE STAMPS:

021008_label_closeupWith the concept of this box came the idea for our Just Hatched stamp set. This set contains images that make it easy to turn this box into the perfect gift.  This is one of three label images in the Just Hatched stamp set.  It reads "Half-Dozen Gifts Hatched Just For You, Little One".  The labels from this set coordinate with the Nestabilties Oval Dies perfectly!

021008_rolled_sockI knew that I wanted to put an itty-bitty pair of baby socks into each egg.  I rolled them up tightly and tucked a pair into each of six eggs.

021008_egg_ribbonTo give the plastic eggs a little pizazz, I decided to add ribbon.  The ribbon needs to be about 10-inches long for each egg.  Lay the ribbon out flat, apply a glue dot to the bottom point and top point of the egg.  Adhere the bottom of the egg to the center of the ribbon strip.

021008_ribbon_tiedPull the ends of the ribbon up and around the egg and knot it into place on top of the egg.  The two glue dots on either end will prevent the ribbon from sliding off!

Once I assembled everything together, the ensemble looked like this…

021008_open_box

I am just in LOVE with this box.  The way that the insert holds the eggs perfectly in place is such a STUNNING presentation!  After showing the Just Hatched Egg Box & stamp set to our Design Team, they came up with a plethora of uses that aren’t necessarily geared towards eggs, or Easter for that matter!  I thought I would share some of their ideas with you BEFORE the reveal on February 15th.  Somewhat of a sneak peek at what is to come.  Instructions & supply lists will be available for ALL of these project in the Ink Pad gallery after the reveal!

021008_laurens_box_3Lauren Meader designed this box with candy filled "carrots" made from disposable frosting bags!  She raised the box insert to the top edge of the box to allow room for the carrots.  They look as though they are being pulled from the ground when you remove one!  How much fun would that be for kids!  (Well, adults too, for that matter!)

021008_heathers_box_outside

Heather Nichols Created this vintage findings box.  It is the perfect gift for a crafting friend year-round.

021008_heathers_box_insideShe was able to use the insert holes to keep the spools of vintage trims in place!

021008_jennifers_box_outsideJennifer Ellefson created a special Easter box for a teacher.  (Take note of the special border along the edge of the box that uses stamps from the set that read "Just a little something" and "For an eggstra special teacher").

021008_jennifers_box_insideThe eggs are filled with all kinds of fun desk supplies that will help get them through the last half of the school year!  A gift card to an office supply store could be attache to the inside of the cover to continue the theme and support your child’s classroom!

021008_taylors_box_outsideTaylor VanBruggen took a really simple approach to the outside of her box.  I just LOVE the way she used the ribbon!

021008_taylors_box_inside_2She discovered that the holes in the box insert were the perfect size for miniature cupcakes!  Imagine bringing a box like this to a friend or co-worker!  They would be so impressed!

021008_lynns_box_outsideLynn Mercurio made this colorful box.  She utilized all the wonderful colors in the ribbon she chose to decorate the box.  They are all wonderful "spring" colors!

021008_lynns_box_insideI am in love with the way she decorated the eggs inside with ric-rac & primas!  They are almost too pretty to open!

021008_beckys_box_outsideBecky Oehlers took a nature based approach to her box, coinciding with the Spring Garden label included in the Just Hatched stamp set.

021008_beckys_box_insideShe used real eggshells to create a gift of a spring garden for someone special.  The best part?  The recipient can plant the flower & eggshell directly into the ground.  The eggshell will provide additional nutrition to get the plant established!

021008_genys_box_2Geny Cassady created another version of a baby box with lots of assorted necessities, like washcloths, pacifiers, nail clippers, etc.  It is a wonderful gift that you can make in advance and will be very useful (and pretty to look at) for any new mother!  I love the way she added little buttons on either side of the label.  Such an adorable touch!

021008_amys_boxAmy Rysavy gave "Spring Garden" new meaning with eggs full of Primas!  Such a fun gift to give to a favorite stamping buddy!  We all know you can never have enough Primas!

021008_debbies_boxDebbie Olson worked her usual magic with combining several patterned papers elegantly together when altering her box.  The colors are so fresh and "springy"!

021008_lisas_boxLast but not least, Lisa Johnson created this masterpiece.  As a special treat to you, Lisa will be sharing some fun details about the contents of her box and a project idea with you on Tuesday in a tutorial feature on her blog!

I would say my idea I will use is : Make a christmas theme box and use the icing holders and fill with hot cocoa, marshmellows, candy canes, hershey kisses to make Snowman soup in a box. LOL Add 2 more holders with Christmas candy or even a gift certificate as part of the surprise!!!! Looking forward Nicole to these being a real hit. Good luck.

Omygosh, this is an amazing idea. I can alread think of a dozen applications. But the first for a friend would be to take those little biodegradable brown cups you use for starting plants. And fill them with the appropiate start mixture and the seed. All ready to water and start your own special garden. Perhaps some herbs for starter!

The cupcakes are sweet.. I love the eggs decorated with the primas and rickrack…
And, the spring eggs gave me an idea! I LOVE to garden and often start my own seeds indoors… I can see making themed mini starter kit sets of herbs for friends, or salad mixes, or even onion sets! Too darn clever!!!!!!! I have to check out each and every one! Great job to you and your team!

They are so cute and creative. I love the baby idea. You could also use it as a bridal shower gift, find glass wear that fits in the holes and fill them with spices or cooking utensil. Put in a recipe and include the spices in the recipe. Fill them with office supplies for a gift for your co-worker. You could also fill with crafting supplies for one of your crafting buddies. They would make great hostess gifts. They would be fun to fill and decorate for a 50th birtday. The possibilities are endless. I am very excited over this.

No way could I pick a favorite! I think the “new life of spring” themed items were my fave- you know new baby and wittle socks, and the really cool spring seedling eggs (howdshedothat eggs?!)

PTI is fast becoming one of the first “go to” blogs in the a.m.- I am excited about the new products, by my bank account is skeered!!

What an awesome idea!!!!! The box has endless possibilities either painted or covered with stamped paper. The elegance of the “Just Hatched” labels really adds a classic and adorable touch. What a clever baby gift with socks in the eggs. Your ribbon tied onto the egg is really sharp. The pink ribbon looks like something we will be seeing in the next few months. Love that soft color!!!!!!!!!

One of the things I like best about PaperTrey is the ingenuity of your design process. You have created stamps and accessories that coordinate beautifully together, and not only do they meet specific needs, but they provide a jumping-off point for the rest of us to use our own creativity.

I love the way these boxes showcase a gift and can do double-duty as storage later on. I love the egg-holding possibilities.

I think that it would be fun to make a gift of this to my nieces. I would decorate it in fun and brilliant spring colors and fill it with the candy filled eggs that are pre-filled. M n Ms, Starbust Jelly bean eggs, ect. It would be fun to find a variety of treats for the kids, they would have a rainbow of color to look at and eat on Easter morning.

As a vegan family, I am always trying to find new and unique ways to celebrate the traditions of Easter with our children while respecting our beliefs.

While the bright plastic eggs in the store are just fine, these boxes with openings in the right size are an elegant way to present a fun gift.

I look forward to being able to bring a new way of celebration into our family with these boxes. For people who don’t eat eggs at an egg filled Holiday, I have to say
    THANK YOU!!!!

I love these little boxes. They seem like the perfect size for a little thank you gift when someone invites you over to their home! My friends and I used to get together for movie nights and we would rotate who hosted. I would decorate the box for our movie night and inside, instead of the typical popcorn and candy, the little “egg holder” could be used to hold mini liquor bottles! Our movie nights were our miniature “ladies night out” afterall!

Holy Cow! THese boxes are awesome! I especially like Lauren’s candy carrot patch and the spring garden. I know that my SIL would love the spring garden since she is the gardener in the family. These are absolutely wonderful! I can barely contain myself waiting for the set! And the paper…and the ribbon. LOL! I’m in trouble!

I am, at the same time, bursting with admiration and pea green with envy at the boundless creativity of all those involved with your products and ideas. The freshness of your concepts, in a world where there is nothing really ‘new’ under the sun, is astounding.

As a jewelry artist, as well as paper crafter, I plan on using these boxes to create jewelry sets. Maybe, a necklace with 2 coordinating bracelets, and 3 sets of matching earrings. The possibilities are endless (and isn’t that just what you had in mind).
