I still wave my arms around as though I’m the conductor whenever I hear it, and have done since I was a little girl! I saw it performed in church on the handbells when I was young and have found it enchanting ever since!

  • 56

That’s tough…I have lots, but one of them is What Child is This? My mom really likes it, so she found a very simplified version for me to learn when I was a beginning piano player. It was the first Christmas song I can remember learning. My husband plays the guitar and has a beautiful voice. This song is one of his favorites and he’s created a beautiful medley with it, so it continues to be a favorite of mine.

I have several depending on my mood. There’s “You’re a Mean One Mr. Grinch” because it’s just such a great tune and that voice! There’s “The River,” particularly Robert Downey Jr’s take from Ally McBeal. I never thought of it as a Christmas song but it’s definitely a winter one and he’s not someone I’d peg as a singer but he actually has a beautiful voice. The last of the big 3 is probably “Carol of the Bells,” especially the “Midnight in Sarajevo” version from Transiberian Orchestra. SO powerful.

My favorite Holiday song is a Medley by John Denver & the Muppets (from their Christmas special many years ago)- Alfie the Christmas Tree/Carol for a Christmas Tree/etc. It’s a collection of short pieces that tell a beautiful story / song about a Christmas tree & his wish for the world. It’s very nature oriented which I love & is just a really, really sweet song. Touches my heart every time I hear it. If you’ve never heard it before, check it out for sure – and make sure to hear the full version; it’s about 4 1/2 mins with all the parts πŸ™‚

And I like the song’s message as well.

“White Christmas”, although there are many Christmas songs that I love hearing over & over. I love the more traditional songs. This particular song brings back fond memories of when I was a child. We really had very little money, & the small B & W TV was so temperamental- you had to hit it @ a certain spot to get rid of specific lines of static (& there was no remote). Anyway, we always watched that movie together, & my mind was filled with so many dreams… I love Christmas!

  • 125
    richard vd L says:

My most favorite holidaysong is not a mainstream song, but rather a song from the disneyland Paris themepark. It is called “Chante c’est NoΓ«l”; which means as much as: Come sing, it’s Christmas.
The themepark has special meaning to us, it was where my father, once through the turnstiles, could forget and be ‘young’ again. We would visit every summer and tried to sneek in another visit during the holiday season.
Sadly he died almost five years ago, but the memories remain.

My favorite is “I’ll Be Home for Christmas.” I always think of my parents who are gone now, so I have a few tears, but I always remember what a special time it was in our home. I try to keep those memories alive.

“I’ll Be Home for Christmas” is special to me because of having a family member in the military–having them home after not seeing them for a LONG time is very special!

‘O Holy Night.’ Not only does this song bring to mind all of the images we relate to the “true meaning of Christmas,” it tells us that Christ came to bring us Hope. He knows what trials we face and what our weaknesses are. He knows our every need. It is a song of worship and rejoicing. I, especially, love the imagery of the stars shining brightly in a dark sky (with angels singing). Who doesn’t like to stand outside on a cloudless night and gaze at the stars?!

Sleigh Ride…one of my bucket list items! Nothing would make my heart sing more than a horse drawn sleigh ride in a beautiful field in the middle of a snowy winter night, with lots of blankets and hot chocolate to keep me and my hubby warm.

Definitely Oh Holy Night, by anyone, but especially country singer Martina McBride. She can belt out a tune, and you can just feel how powerful the song is when she sings it!

You probably don’t know my favorite Christmas song since it’s French and called ” Petit papa Noel ” (little Santa). Everybody know it over here; Otherwise I love “jingle bells”. It’s the first song that I learned in English and so did my children.
