Day 5: Introducing Make It Monday Challenge & Video Series

February 4, 2010      Nichole Heady      512 Comments

Hello, everyone!  Welcome back to the Papertrey Third Anniversary festivities!

Today I get to announce a brand new program that is replacing our previous Guest Star Stamper contest. Something that's even bigger and better and will reward EVERYONE that participates instead of just a select few.  Something that will bring everyone together on a weekly basis… design team members, customers, beginners and seasoned stampers alike.

I introduce to you…

Make-It-Monday-logo

Make It Mondays are another special feature that Erin Lincoln & I have been working on (think of her as resident techno guru!).  The Make It Monday challenge series.  Every Monday there will be a technique video posted by a Papertrey Team Member or myself, showcasing a nice balance of basics and new innovations to cater to everyone's skill levels.

There will then be a special location on our new website that will have a database, similar to Mister Linky functionality, that will allow people to post a link to a project they create using that weeks technique. Erin will then proceed to "tweet" a project of special mention every night Tuesday through Friday, something we are calling "Inspiration Hour".  We will also have a special "Inspiration Hour" forum where people can stop by to chat with one another during that designated time, perhaps even virtually stamp together. At the end of the week (on the following Monday) a grand prize winner will be selected from all the entries.

We will be introducing a "rewards" program that works with a points system. Participants that add their link to our database will automatically get a point just for participating, while someone who receives one of the coveted "Inspiration Hour" tweets would get additional points and the weekly winner would gain even more. These points will be equal to Papertrey cash to be used at their disposal on Papertrey merchandise.

Free-products
That's right.  You will be able to earn money for your monthly Papertrey purchases just for participating in our weekly challenges!  Now how's that for motivation!

Make It Mondays will begin when our new website goes live this spring!  We will definitely keep you posted with more information as it becomes available!

I thought it would be fun to kick off this announcement with my very own video.  My very first to be honest.  Definitely a bit rough around the edges.  And I still have a lot to learn, so don't be too harsh!  I thought it only appropriate to show you my favorite stamping technique, emboss resist.  Enjoy!

I didn't focus in on the completed card at the end of that video (lesson learned!), so here is a closeup photo of it so you can see all the details.

Emboss Resist Card
I love this card because it could easily be used for either a male or female recipient.  Not to mention, it's quick and easy to make too!  Can't you imagine it in other colors too?!?!

Leaf closeup
The contrast between the shiny embossing and the overall rustic style of the project are really stunning, especially in person.  I love layering monochromatic colors like I did here with the Spring Moss & Ripe Avocado inks.  It really adds a lot of depth and "artistic flair" to an otherwise plain & simple card.  No buttons, no bows, just paper!  Just the way I like it sometimes!

Scallops closeup
As I mentioned int he video, this scalloped edge is created with a brand new, VERY exciting product exclusively by Papertrey Ink, that I will be introducing to you in full tomorrow!  Look how perfect they are… *sigh*.  Just love 'em!  You won't believe what we have to tell you tomorrow! Definitely one of THE most exciting announcements of the entire week!

A-contest
So, how about a contest?  We want to see what YOU can do with the emboss resist technique!

Emboss-Resist-Challenge
1. Make a project using any form of the emboss resist technique.

2. Upload a photo of your project to you blog or online gallery.  (You can only upload one project, please)

5.  Add the link for your photo(s) to the Mister Linky box below.

6.  Those that leave a comment talking about what type of techniques they would like to see covered in this series, will also be eligible to win.  Those that create a project link in Mister Linky AND comment will have an extra entry. Only one comment per person please.

To give you a little jumpstart with this challenge, here's what a few of our design team members came up with to meet this challenge!

  • Niki Estes
  • Dawn McVey
  • Heather Nichols
  • Melissa Phillips

The-prize
Monday's-Prize-ALL 25 of our full-size ink pads in our exclusive colors.

As I sit here trying to come up with a technique that you could teach me, I realize that I can’t even dream up what I don’t know that you do. Maybe I could make a list of the things I do know how to do and let you decide what’s missing! I’ll just take the easy road and say that I’m always looking for new ideas for using your beautiful ribbon.

Just for participating! It’s just like Christmas… sniff! 🙂 On the one hand, I love that you don’t have sales — it means I can shop without any potential for remorse or waiting for the next “deal”… But it’s nice to see that you’ve perhaps discovered a way for us to “earn” some of the products we love too! FANTASTIC!

How-to videos of any sort are appreciated, but the ‘whys’ behind the design would be my request. I realize that some of the creative process is intuitive, but there is also some planning that comes into play, e.g. combining stamp sets, layouts. Also, designs without Copics would be a plus. I would love to see some techniques focusing on how you pick colour combos using colour theory, how to cut a straight line with pinking shears (something I just can’t seem to do, ha!), Copics techniques (maybe a series of these with a different technique each time?), sewing on cards, background building techniques, how to heat emboss perfectly, how you design your layouts/card composition, and then any and all advanced techniques you can throw at us!!

Do I spy the possibility of Papertrey dies?!! This was something I requested on the forum a while back so I really hope I’m right!!

And how exciting is the ‘Make it Mondays’ news?!! I’m so excited to have these challenges on a more regular basis, and to get a reward just for entering, which I can then use towards purchases?!! *Wow*!!! I’ve never felt such love from a company before, I don’t think any other company out there takes such good care of its customers and rewards them so much!!!

Great news about the videos! I love learning new techniques “visually”. However, I am not a fan of the accelerated speed. It somehow feels rushed and unnatural. Why not show it in real time and for the long repetitive sections, just cut away in the editing process? Just a thought… Thanks again for the great content on your site!

Bad thing is that I stay up late so I always read your blog last thing at night. This time I had to stay up to start my card! Now it’s almost 3:30 and I NEED to go to bed!

I would love to see what and how your team uses for cutting tools, including scissors. Tieing bows and threading buttons are also a great tutorial. I am always interested in new techniques and styles. I would love to hear from Melissa about her shabby style.

I like seeing the everyday things. I love that Dawn showed us how she ties a bow. Hello I have saved so much ribbon already in some pretty big projects I had to do. Or how she attaches a button. I was struggling with how to do it by sowing. Perhaps Debbie can do copic tutorials. Maybe you can show how you did the copics on that fun graduated color technique with the great tree set. Just some ideas! I think that elobrate techniques are fun, but a lot of times it is the everyday things that we would use over and over that is fun to see new ways to do it.

Any and all techniques you showcase will be appreciated, from the very basic, how to prep stamps and ink them up for the best image quality, to tying bows or threading through buttons, to more advanced techniques. I tend to “tag” any posts where someone has shared a photo tutorial. Video tutorials will be even better. Thank you so much for all you do to inspire and reward your customers. Make It Monday’s might be just the push I need to “go get inky” on a more regular basis.

Hi Nichole … Are we lucky OR what!! You made a fantastic video and I’m really looking forward to seeing more of you in the future. I liked seeing the way you do the emboss resist. The “point” system sounds interesting. What a good idea! I’m looking forward to any technique that your group wants to share with us. If I think of a specific one, I’ll let the group know in the future. I have loved every day of your celebration so far. Thanks for expanding the PTI experience!! Karen

Make It Monday is such an amazing, wonderful concept! Wow! I am always looking for weekly challenges and for PTI to have their own is like a dream come true! Then in true PTI fashion, you are adding the point system as a special bonus for your fans. You guys are just the best! I would love to see a Copics video, something on stitching on cards and just whatever fabulous ideas you come up with. Oh, and a note on the scallops. Is PTI going to add punches or dies? I had to find a Stampin’ Up rep to buy a punch and die that I wanted that were exclusive to them. If PTI starts selling their own, I will be in heaven!! Thanks again for making every day this week like Christmas!

Video techniques – copic coloring, ribbob treatments, and decorative scoring! I have a scor-pal but i seem to have mental block when it comes to using it for anything other than templates and card folds.

And, just a suggestion, I’d rather see it in real time even if that means the sentiment is prestamped or things like that. Thanks for all you do!!

One of the strengths on your blog is showing a lot of different ways to use products and truthfully it is rare I do not walk away with an “aha” moment. I am still a bit intimidated with sewing on my projects and would love to see more on that technique. Also how about more techniques for using transparencies? I love the added dimension they give to a project.

OOOHHH OOOHHH OHHHHHHH My heavens! Nicole everything sounds so exciting! OK this is going to sound really weird. I have been “collecting” my Papertrey Ink Stamps for some time now. I usually stamp with stamps that require coloring. So stamp and go stamps so to speak are out of my comfort zone, but I am crazy about the look. As a matter of fact, I get Papertreys post, plus that of DT members in my mailbox. I am just afraid my cards won’t turn out as fabulous as the DT gals without coloring. (I am not saying mine are fab with my coloring by any means.) I just have to take the plug hug? Well with your new video’s, challenges and ways to earn “points” to buy PT stuff how can I not? I am soooo hooked on EVERYTHING PT! The whole line is the best! Ok I am off to be inspired some more. I have more DT reading to do!

    1. Using Copics
    2. Buttons (outside of your awesome button stamp sets).
    3. Sewing

I’d love to see a technique, I think its called Kiss). Its were you take a plain stamp with no image and create images on it with other stamps before you stamp it on paper. I saw it once years ago, I think what happens is when you ink the stamp with the image on it and then stamp it onto the plain block stamp it a transfers to the block and allows you to create basically a scene. I’m not sure if I’m explaining it correctly. I’d also love to see some videos on different storage ideas for ribbons, stamps, inks, cardstock, etc.

I have so much trouble aligning them, although it’s better after Dawn’s video. I’d also like to see a video on layout design tips. I always seem to struggle with the layouts of my cards. I loved your video Nichole! You did such an amazing job considering that was your first one! I am so excited about the direction I see PTI headed in! oh..as far as techniques go, I know there are a few girls on the DT that are very good with the vintage feel on cards. I love to see more techniques related to anything vintage! And. I also love how some of the DT girls make their own wmbellies…very cool and very economical! Whatever you all come up with, you can be sure that I’ll be along for the ride! Thanks! =)

How cool! One technique I’d love to see is stamping with the long, rectangular stamps (like background basics) over a whole piece of paper without messing it up. If the ink is light or is watermark (which I often use) I have the hardest time lining them up evenly!

Way cool, again! I love this make it Mondays idea. I love new ideas and tecniques. Just watching you make that card, I learned more than just resist-stamping. I saw that your pieces are larger than the card size and you cut them down once you have it all tacked down. That was soooo cool to see. That makes for your great placement of scallops etc. See, there is alot to be learned from all of ya. Can’t wait!!!!!!!!!!
