Well, when I was a kid, it was the changing colors of the leaves and the cooler weather. But since my adult self has always lived in Texas, where the leaves don’t change color, I’d say my favorite part is trying to decide when fall actually starts. Is it in September, when the calendar declares it to be autumn, or in late November or early December, when the temperatures finally stay out of the 80s for good?

I love Autumn, although it is a hard time of year for my family. My dad was killed in a plane crash in October a few years ago, so every year as soon as Autumn rolls around, it is a bitter-sweet time as we remember my dad and celebrate the things that we are thankful for at the same time. My favorite thing about Autumn is Thanksgiving. It is the one time of year that my entire family is able to get together. We celebrate all of the “year end holidays” at that time, so we exchange gifts, have a big meal, talk about what we are thankful for, etc.

I love the slight nip in the air, the crystal clear blue skies (or maybe just a puffy white cloud or two) that so often dominates our autumn weather and then add in the fabulouse colors of the changing leaves and it adds up to just a stunning time. You know its Autumn here in Melbourne Australia, because the skies are blue, the sun kisses your skin ever so delicately and the air is clean and crisp. There is a glorious big Maple tree in the city, that since I was a little girl my Grandparents and parents used to take me to see in Autumn. The falling leaves and colour of it was the most amazing memorable sight I’d ever seen. I now, 30 odd years later, take my 4 children every Autumn to see “mummy’s” special Autumn tree, as my children call it!! The colours are something that you could never forget. It’s the colour of a soft sunset everywhere you look with the city lights and the Red trams in the foreground that Melbourne is Famous for. That for me is what I love about autumn….. Seeing “My” special Autumn Tree.

My favorite part of autumn is the family trip we take to the apple orchard. When I was a kid, we went with my parents, grandparents, and cousins every year. We would get up early and pack a picnic lunch, drive along the Mississippi River to look at all the fall colors, then stop at a teeny roadside park for lunch. It has one of those old fashioned pumps to get water. After lunch we would continue on to the apple orchard, picking our own apples and pumpkins and enjoying the day! Now that my grandparents are gone, I love going even more! I want to keep the tradition alive in my family!

I never used to enjoy autumn; watching everything slowly die and knowing that a long cold winter was ahead was depressing (I lived in the Midwest). However, last fall I was pregnant with my third child and my doctor told me after a routine ultrasound that the baby had a brain defect. It was a shock, but as I slowly came to terms with the possibility that my child would be born handicapped, I was reminded that each season is necessary-yes the leaves change and fall, and the flowers fade away, but it is all needful. Without autumn, there would be no spring. It took on a new meaning, and now I look forward to seeing things change in nature, since it gives me hope that there will be spring again!
Jen says
Crisp autumn air…crunching leaves…pumpkins on porches…these are a few of my favorite things!

He gave us a whole new set of eyes for the fair. I can’t wait to go again this year!

To take a part of a quote from You’ve Got Mail”… Newly sharpened pencils… There is something about new school supplies out in the stores that I love. I still love to stroll down the back to school isles in stores. Just makes me feel like a kid again.

Marilyn Wolk says
I love fallen leaves. When I was young (about 5 years old), my nephew and I used to dive into piles of leaves from our gigantic Oriental Plane trees that my dad had neatly raked up. We would dive in and then throw handfuls of them at each other – just like kids splashing in a swimming pool. Of course, my dad did not much appreciate it, but it was sooooo much fun – until we had to clean up the mess we made. To this day, whenever I see fallen leaves, I am thrilled by them and try to collect as many as I can to put into my flower press. I have so many dried leaves in my collection there is not enough time in a lifetime to use them up in all my project ideas. Yet I can still feel the thrill just thinking about them – even though they now are brittle and pale.

What is my favorite part of autumn? EVERYTHING! I am a transplant from the Pacific Northwest and never knew the meaning of Indian Summer. I do now! Autumn here is a full-blown sensory explosion for weeks. You have the colors of nature’s palette on display, the varied Halloween costumes of the deliriously happy children, the sounds of the dried leaves as they scamper to the next house. You take in the smells of burning leaves, apple cobbler and pumpkin pie. You wear clothes with as many textures as there are layers. And you participate in a grand holiday, seemingly forgotten, squenched in between its calendar cousins, Halloween and Christmas, Thanksgiving. How can we not show our gratitude for such blessings and wonder as autumn graciously bestows upon us. I’m there. “I Want It All” to be FALL, all the time!

Getting together with my husband’s extended family in Brown County, Indiana. We always go when the leaves are at their peak of color. The day starts out very early with warm homemade cinnamon rolls, eggs, smoky links, and coffee by the huge fire. Then we go for a walk through the park, take pictures, and spend time cathing up with those we haven’t talked to in awhile. Around noon, we grill out hamburgers and hot dogs for a good ol’ cook out. After lunch, we play a fun game of football in a huge open field and then head into town for some country shopping and strolling through the town. LOVE it!

I live in St Louis where it’s crazy humid, sticky hot from mid-June until mid-September. It’s hard to breathe when you step outside; kind of like the blast of heat that hits you when you open a hot oven. Most summers (though not this one) all the grass turns brown from heat and lack of rain so when autumn begins and the air turns crisp and everything comes alive again with color for a short time as the leaves turns gorgeous shades of yellows and oranges and reds. So I guess my favorite part of autumn is the crispness in the air and the color in the trees.

That feeling in the air always makes me think of my college days and those were probably the happiest of my life.

My favorite part about autumn is absolutely everything because I was from New Jersey and I moved to all green Florida. I really miss autumn because I don’t really get to experience it anymore like I used to so I decorated my house all in fall colors. You walk in my house and you see warm browns, red, greens and neutral colors everywhere.
I miss picking pumpkins off the vine and tripping on all the vines everwhere. Now I pick up pumpkins from the farmer’s market. I miss picking apples from the orchard and making fresh desserts. I miss the chill in the air and crunching of leaves beneath my feet. Oh no I’m getting misty-eyed here. There is a lot here I’m reminiscing all about all the things I love about autumn.

When I think about my favorite part of autumn I have to think of winter first. In winter, everything is covered with snow and it is fun to play in, after you put on four layers of clothing. After a short time you must retreat inside for cocoa. Well, autumn brings blankets of leaves in vibrant and beautiful colors and different shapes and sizes. The good news is you “might” have put on a sweater but, you can play outside for hours. You can make piles and jump in them. You can listen to the sounds of dried leaves under your feet. You can also gather perfect specimens and create (let your kids create) masterpieces with them later. I have a strawberry tree and during autumn the bark peels leaving a perfectly smooth trunk which is so soft I just love to touch it. During the process it is so interesting looking. I do hate raking leaves but, it beats shoveling snow any day!
Sue D says
My favorite part of autumn has to be the changing colors of the leaves. They are so beautiful. I also like the crisp air and the smell of the first fire in the fireplace. Added to all this is the bountiful harvest from our garden.

Scrunching through leaves, crisp clear skies and the excuse to curl up reading in front of the first toasty warm fires of the year are the things I love most about autumn – sadly I no longer get to enjoy these things as I live in a city which has just two seasons a year and is surrounded by evergreen bush (which, I hasten to add is beautiful in its own way) We’re in the depths of winter here in the southern hemisphere, so rather than autumn I’m waiting hopefully for the first blue skies of spring to appear!

Reading over the posts that proceed mine, it appears that the favorite part of fall for many of us is much the same.. crisp clear days, cool nights, the smell of autumn leaves and of course the beautiful earthy colours.
I remember as a child helping my father rake the leaves into big piles then falling into them laughing only to rake them up again. The change of seasons isn’t so apparent in Florida, now i enjoy long walks along the quiet beach deserted by summer tourists and left once again to only the sea gulls.

I love seeing my boys get excited for Halloween. I love their indecision on picking out a costume. I love the creative costumes they come up with so they can be everything they want to dress up as (ex. a Cowboy/Fireman/Monster). My absolute favorite is Halloween day. They can’t wait for my husband to get home. They are ready to go out before it’s even dark, and they are so excited they can hardly eat their dinner. Then dinner is over when the doorbell rings and we have our first Trick or Treater.. After that, time to get dressed!! Their excitement of the pumpkin being dumped out to be ‘checked’ and their shock upon me sneaking a piece!!

My favorite thing about autumn is the changing color in the leaves. I love all the scarlets, golds, brown, and fall greens. We live near a village that dates back to the early 1900s. The streets are lined with liquid amber trees and their red and gold colors are just breathtaking.

The Treats created to thrill our senses! Autumn leaves tickle our ears with their crackle and popping sounds, our nose with their smell (burning or fresh on the ground)pumpkins, nuts, fruits and more to savor the taste buds and what can be more fun than jumping and tossing up a pile of gorgeous leaves. Oh just feel them as you play!

Autumn is my favorite season! The best part is sitting out with friends enjoying the crisp air and the changing of the leaves. And don’t forget Halloween, my favorite holiday!

The most wonderful thing about Autumn is it feels like a time of new beginnings. Maybe it is the “back to school” thing, the change of the seasons, but it seems like the world is fresh and ready for me to take it on.

wow, i want these stamps…okay my favorite about autumn/fall would first have to be the cool weather, we live in a place where the weather is 100 plus hot so I always look forward to the cool weather, next is because I know the holidays are just around the corner and I am a HOLIDAY type of girl….
