Hi everybody, welcome to our new feature What do I do with this? For this challenge our designers will get to try out some of these new tools and share the projects they created using them. We’ve got some fun, new things coming to the Papertrey Ink store and our designers will show you how to use them so you’ll be comfortable incorporating them into your card-making and gift-giving. Stay tuned for exciting and creative things coming your way! We want to share what our designers love with you, and this gives you a first-hand look into their crafty-faves!
Let’s get started!
Flowers and birds are my go-to favorites for card creations and a corner collage layout is a favorite as well. I always ask myself “How can I add more interest and dimension?” and this brings me to giving a shout out to some fairly new products available in the Papertrey Ink store: Nuvo Embellishment Mousse and Distress Texture Crackle Paste.
Step 1: Starting with an Aqua Mist base, I used a dots stencil with Aquamarine Nuvo Embellishment Mousse.
Step 2: I next added a Border Bling: Skinny Postage frame die and offset the position to the lower right corner.
Step 3: I love to get varied colors by ink “smooshing” with distress inks. For the flowers and leaves, I placed 3 colors on an acrylic block or glass mat, spritzed with water, then dipped watercolor paper into the inks. I dried after each “smoosh” and built up the layers of color until I was satisfied. Not drying between times can result in muddy colors. A final splatter of Permanent White Gouache paint finished up the process.
Step 4: I cut all die parts of the bird from Bristol Smooth Surface paper and covered the main body part with aquamarine mousse. It gives a pearlized look which is a fun detail. The remaining pieces were color blended with dye inks. I added crackle paste to the wings which adds another element of texture.
Step 5: Now comes the fun part of arranging all the elements! I avoid gluing down the tips of the foliage and also added Glossy Accents to the berries to give added dimension.
For this challenge, we would love to see how you can add more texture and interest to your card creations through different mediums!
