Sue says
My first supplies were stamps and ink and a paper cutter.
Carrie K says
Back in the late 80’s, I saw heat embossing for the first time and I was enchanted! I saved my money (broke college kid) and bought a single rubber stamp, black ink pad, and a jar of clear embossing powder. I used to have to melt the powder using the heat from a stove burner as there was no way I could afford a heat tool. It was a decorative image with a Happy Birthday sentiment that I would stamp on the envelope of birthday cards I sent to friends and family. I would color the tiny characters and balloons with markers or colored pencils. I used that stamp well after my college days and it remained my only stamp until I discovered clear stamps existed. Then, it was full speed ahead and no turning back! Lol!
annheidel says
Hmmm….pretty sure it was a black ink pad. lol Also some wood stamps from Close to My Heart. It’s been eighteen years so memory is hazy. 😀 I think I bought black and gold embossing powder, a VersaMark pad, and an embossing gun after that. Andrea S. says
The first product I bought when I started stamping was VersaFine Onyx Black Ink. I’m still using the same pad!
Shelly says
I honestly can’t remember what my very first stamping supplies purchased were since It’s been over 20 years ago. Now I’m totally an attic and have the supplies to prove it! My daughter’s friends come over and comment in amazement about all the “stuff” in my craft room.

I started stamping almost 25 years ago! How things have changed since then. I believe I bought a pad of gold pigment ink and a couple of Christmas stamps. I used them to decorate the outside envelopes of my Christmas newsletters. I didn’t realize that the pigment ink needed to be dried, so I am sure some of my envelopes arrived smeared at their designations. Didn’t buy a heat gun until a couple months later when I realized that I really, really liked my new hobby!
Denise C. says
My first stamping supplies were a couple wood mount stamps, a few ink pads and card stock. My four kids were still living at home at that time and a dedicated crafting space was not in the cards (haha) so I would set up shop in my laundry room…..I was in there all the time anyway!!

I bought a few other tools and I quickly figured with the right supplies and organizational system stamping was enjoyable!

I remember YouTubing a ton about the essential tools for stamping… initially I went to my nearest craft stores to buy some tools… the inks I got were so horrible that I started researching more and discovered so many brands online. I rarely buy from Joann’s and michaels when it comes to stamps and inks. I love the unique products offered from PTI and love PTI card stocks.
Penny J says
My SIL is a Stampin’ Up Demonstrator and my first stamp purchase was from her: Ink, paper, stamps, ribbon, paper cutter. That is of course until Papertrey started in 2007. I loved their classic, clean line stamps that would stand the test of time and not look dated a few years later. Not to mention the fabulous cardstock and matching ink. Most of my SU items go unused today, but I do need to change that to use things up.
kellyv says
What a fun question! I bought two or three PSX stamps (this was in about 1997 and I loved PSX the way I now love PTI!) some pigment ink (I believe it was Encore gold) and gold embossing powder and a heat tool (which I am still using) because I saw a demo of the magic of embossing and I jumped (with both feet) into the paper crafting world. I bought a mixed pad of cardstock as well! Soon after that I began collecting Tombow markers so I could colour all of those beautiful embossed images. I still have two of the very first stamps that I purchased and I still use them. They have battle scars but they still make beautiful impressions each and every time.

I was fortunate to get into card making when it was really taking off with clear stamps and these independent stamp companies coming out of the woodwork! When I first discovered clear stamps (through PTI) I stalked blogs to see how they worked. Once I dived in I was sold and never looked back! And then dies came along – THAT changed my world!

I had some Stampin Up sets that were bought from my sister-in-law (maybe almost 20 years ago) and never used. So I happened to buy a Papercrafts magazine (I think) maybe 10 or 12 years ago which got me interested in making cards. I then bought some cheap ink, cheap cardstock and some markers that only smeared the ink lines….and had some frustration initially! Fortunately, I quickly found Papertrey, and got hooked on their quality products!
Tracey McNeely says
What a great question! I was just talking about that the other day. I bought two woodblock rubber stamps, embossing ink, embossing powder and a heat tool after seeing a card on a wall. I thought to myself, how hard could that be?? Ha ha ha ha

I started stamping in 1983, when supplies were really limited. I bought three Emerald City polymer stamps at a craft show, and a couple of office-supply inkpads. My collection grew from there as I started mail ordering from Rubber Stampede, Hero and Inkadinkado, and eventually other companies. (All stamps were wood-mounted then.) Not too long after that, the very first embossing powder appeared, in the Bizarro catalog, and I bought the whole set–five colors. I still have most of those first powders!

Susan G says
Rubber stamps and some ink. I first started using copy paper and my children’s construction paper and the basic colored sharpie pens. Boy, when I look at a few of my first cards, it’s embarrassing. What an amazing journey to where I am now… and I still have TONS more to learn. My stash now rivals a small store…well, maybe not quite. I am totally hooked and loving every minute.
Linda Gorman says
I know this sounds funny but it was a heat gun, embossing ink, and embossing powder and a pirate stamp. This was in the early 90’s and this had just been introduced. I was shown a demo and that was all it took! I still have that Milwaukee heat gun and it works perfect!!!
Stacy Breidenbach says

Inks, heat gun and embossing powder, blocks. The list of supplies has definitely grown from there!

I went to Michaels and bought a paper trimmer and some scissors that would cut scallop edges
(remember those?) and a pack of colored paper.

Karen S. says
Happy Release Day! My first purchases were some simple sentiment stamps, ink & (12×12) Paper as I originally started as a scrapbooker. I found that to be very time consuming given small children, so I waited a bit and “moved over” to card making. At that point, I made a big (for me anyway) investment of a heat gun & BigKick machine!

As a crafter, I had some supplies already like ribbon, colored pencils, buttons, etc., but it was white cardstock, stamps, black waterproof ink, double sided tape, papercutter (a big one which my husband recommended…it was pricey in the scheme of things for us, but I’m still using it and never regretted the purchase).

My first supplies were from my local scrapbooking store to make a baby book after my son was born. Soon I had a ton of scraps of pretty paper to use and I began making Birthday cards. I fell in love with card making and began to research how to stamp and design cards. I saw gorgeous cards in magazines with product lists and this led me to Papertrey Ink. I fell in love with the timeless and classic elegance of their stamps and the gorgeous cardstocks with matching inks. I have been a customer ever since!

My first specific card-making supplies were Scor-Tape and the PTI card stock sampler. I wanted to mount some of my drawings to make cards. But I didn’t start stamping till years later, when the MISTI came out. The MISTI, some PTI ink cubes, and a few PTI sentiments (such as Communique Sentiments, KIS: Thinking of You, and KIS: Thinking of You) were my first stamping purchases. All are still my favorites and necessities! The new kit will be a wonderful way for new stampers to get started.

Years ago, I bought Christmas stamps, one complete with its handle, and inks, and embossing powders.. My largest buy was an embossing heater. Being very messy, and, except for a few tags, not making anything useful with these supplies, they were put away for many years. It was the Petite Places that brought me into the real world of stamping!

My first cards were a way of using supplies I’d bought for a scrapbooking class, but had discovered I didn’t enjoy scrapbooking. I bought a set of thank you sentiments that came with a stamping block and some black ink. I remember I had to hand cut circles for one of the sentiments – never a great idea.
SusanP says
My first supplies when I started stamping were wooden stamps. My daughter bought me a few for Christmas one year – and that started it all! I bought additional wooden stamps on ebay for a while (mostly Stampin Up), then found Papertrey and clear acrylic stamps – and the rest is history! I started with a few inks and – now have TONS – started with a few sets of stamps and now have TONS – started with a few die cuts, then a die cutting machine – you guessed it – now have TONS! This hobby is an addiction, but one I love and I hope one I bless others with in the way of handmade cards.
Dawn Y. says
My cardmaking journey has been a long, happy one! I remember writing sentiments with an erasable pen and heating the embossing powder over my toaster in my 20s. As the years went on, I loved alphabet stamps and cute, encouraging stamps to use with my young students. Floral stamps became my favorite when I became a gardener. After I retired, the first BIG tool that I bought was a Big Shot. I knew that meant I would make papercrafting, especially card making, a very special part of this chapter of my life. This creative journey has been such a joy and I have been inspired and blessed by the kindness of everyone I have met along the way! ?

With the help of my seasoned stamping friend, Ruthann, I’ve been hooked ever since.

If memory serves, I joined a stamp-of-the-month club for a while, which included a subscription bonus of a couple of acrylic blocks and an ink pad or two. Oh my! My very first supplies I bought were some stickers and a wood mounted stamp set that had 4 bugs. I didn’t even have a heat gun, I used a oven toaster to try and emboss. And I never even bought any paper, my mom worked at a print shop and I took home some of the scraps left over. (Some of the paper I still have today). I also first started out scrapbooking, but then later went on to cards. I only ever finished 1 scrapbook and have about 3 others still waiting to get done. lol. I think they will stay that way. I started making cards with my leftover scrapbooking supplies and found I liked that way better. Once I got into card making, I found PTI. Yeah!

A set of Mexico stamps made by Plaid where the rubber sheet was separate from the wood block and you had to put them together. There is a little black ink pad included in the set too. I also bought some chalks to color the images. I was a first time scrapbooker making an album for my MIL of a Mexican cruise we all went on and wanted her to have something to remember it by. I used those little stamps to accent the pages. I still have that set. Bet the ink pad is dried up though.

Just think of all the money we have save in greeting cards by making our own. Hehehe.

The first supplies I purchased were a stamp ink pad, most likely black Staz On, a couple of wooden stamps and some cardstock. From there it went crazy. I loved it
so much that I felt I had to have it all. Looking back, if I had been more patience, I am sure there are plenty of things I never would have purchased. Like punches for instance. I rarely use my punches now because I prefer using dies, and dies store so much easier than punches.

My first “adult” products were a set of small all occasion stamps. I had ink and card stock from other projects with my kids but these were stamps I could use to make cards for a variety of celebrations. That opened the door to so many wonderful products, and the door is still swinging wide open. I became a follower of PTI because of their online presence, the talented designers and the high quality, beautiful photopolymer stamps. Pti continues to be one of my favorites.
Susan says
First I would like to thank PTI for the addition of the “sample book” on the release page – Wow how wonderful is that to be able to see each item AND a sample (or samples) without having to flip back and forth between blog posts!! Please keep that.
My first supplies were markers and stamps so we could color each individual stamp and then “huff” on them to print a colored image. Also my stamp store (which is no longer in business, boo hoo) had a big selection of Tapestry peg stamps and Versacolor inks – I loved those things and I still have all of them because they are timeless. Reminds me – I should pull them out again and make some cards with them.

I was introduced to stamping at a home party and I remember buying a bunch of stamp sets, but not too much in the way of other supplies. These languished for a long time until another home party where the emphasis seemed to have switched from scrapbooking to card making. That I could wrap my head around. Shortly after that I was introduced and rest is history. First supplies – definitely – good quality cardstock, a variety of ink pads (start with favorite color palette), adhesive and pop dots and some multi-occasion stamp sets with images and good sentiments. It’s funny, I can’t even remember how I got into stamping. I’ve always been a maker, so likely I saw a picture somewhere and I just got that itch to do it myself. I believe I started with a handful of wooden block stamps and ink. I have a ridiculous amount of patterned paper and embellishments I will probably never use, but isn’t it funny how hard it is to let go of these things because what it?!?
Stephanie Marostica says
I was at a florist buying flowers and they had a tiny shelf with about 10 stamps. I bought my first stamp and that started my love affair with stamping!! The 15th of the month is my favorite day waiting to see what incredibly creative new product will be released.

My first stamping supplies were given to me: a wood-mounted set of all-occasion outline images with attached sentiments, plus a box of neon pre-folded cards with matching envelopes and black and blue ink pads from an office supply store. The first supplies I bought, however, were three wood-mounted sets: a floral set (can’t go wrong with that! I still use it all the time), a kitschy bird set, and a stylized woodland animal set. My style has evolved quite a bit since then, and I quickly learned the importance of versatile sentiments! Discovering photopolymer stamp companies online was revolutionizing.

Wow…that was over 30 years ago! It’s hard to remember back that far. White card stock, envelopes, black ink and a wooden stamp set that included stamps to cover several occasions. I already had some cheap colored pencils so I was good to go. I still have some of the first cards I ever made…what a hoot! I didn’t discover PTI until about 8 years ago and a couple years before that discovered all that was on the internet. My passion exploded with all the creativity abounding. Once I realized there were rubber stamping magazines and rubber stamps stores(!), I bought a beautiful copy of RubberstampMadness. At that time, it was a very large magazine with beautiful and kooky cards and wonderful ads. The rest is history!

I was introduced to stamping at a Stampin Up party. The demonstrator brought all the supplies and had each of us make a card following her directions. I was hooked immediately! Of course, I had to buy everything we had used to make the card….ink, stamps, ribbon, and cardstock. I took home the catalog and wanted to buy every single thing in it, but of course I had to use restraint and start small. Actually there were many things in the catalog that I had no idea what they were! That was 15 years ago and today my craft room is bursting at the seams! I became interested in stamping on my own because I wanted to use stamps to make titles and embellishments for scrapbooking. I remember buying a little peg alphabet set and a grey inkpad the identical color of the new Weathervane (my love for those greys goes way back!). Eventually, I got into cardmaking when my best friend introduced me to Papertrey Ink, whose wonderful design team has helped me stretch my imagination! What fun!

I looked on the side of that stamp and seen it had come from a company called Personal Stamp Exchange. My first stamping supplies were paper, wood block stamps and ink. How far I’ve come in a decade with PTI!
Rema DeLeeuw says
Ink, several colors of cardstock and stamps, a trimmer and bone folder. I thought that would be all I needed. Boy was I wrong…lol! Now I have an entire bedroom turned into a craftroom and I’m am slowly creeping into other rooms without my husband’s knowledge!

I had been scrapbooking for years before my first stamping experience. I started with a wood stamp set and black ink. At first, I was only stamping on my scrapbook pages. It didn’t take long before the slippery slope of card making came along and many, many, many more supplies were bought!!!
Brandi R says
Very cheapo stamps and inks with the thought of scrapbooking in mind. They were foam stamps, just to get my feet wet..lol
Sano says
My first supply for stamping was Inkadinkadoo stamp set and ink. Over twenty years later….

I started scrapbooking a very long time ago so I think I had everything else except stamps and inks. I had been resisting because i knew once I started I would want everything and yes sure enough my first of many purchases after were stamps and then the collection just grew and it’s taken over my craft room now. ?But I truly love this hobby.

First of all, I want to tell you how impressed I was to see the book format of the new release items! I was blown away! I looked at it several times in awe! Great job!
The answer to your question is, my first supplies were a paper trimmer, watercolor pencils, blender pen, black stamp pad, a bone folder, a few red rubber stamps and some very inexpensive cardstock. Today, I have a small room that I call my “STAMP VAULT” in which I store all my many, many wonderful supplies, the vast majority of them are PTI products! Thank you for contributing to my papercrafting addiction! I love it!
Kay R Tillman says
My first purchase was stamps to start scrapbooking, have yet to finish one book and that was 18 years ago. Thanks for such a great release.
Sharron Gregory says
I went to two parties before finding PTI and bought a small set of wood stamps. I’m not sure what else except I did order the watercolor pencils because I thought they were so cool. I never knew how to use them effectively so they are still stored away in my closet!
Michele Lourenco says
One stamp set, a set of ink cubes and a carstock sampler. To think that it was enough!
By the way, I love the interactive catalog that you pubilshed at the top of this post. It’s beautiful, professional and love the samples embedded in it.

My first supplies were from Stampin Up, Oh how I remember having to scissor cut the rubber stamps, I kept thinking this is ridiculous, but kept ordering . Became a demonstrator for a number of years, eventually hooked my daughter into it too,She is still a demonstrator I have since retired being a “demo” and discovered PTI along the way and love it.
Danielle Siegel says
The first thing I bought when I started stamping was an ink pad that had multiple colors in it. I guess one of those color box ombré kind. Also, a few wooden blocks and some paper. I think I also bought a heat gun and some embossing powder. Boy, have a come along way!!! My first wooden block stamp was a Kokapelli! And I got some verdigris copperish embossing powder to go with it. Funny how my taste has change so much!! PTI Is one of my favorite companies! You guys have the most unusual, original stamps and dies! What a generous giveaway you are doing. Thank you so much
Danny says
Started simply with two stamp sets and a handful of ink pads.
Kathleen Curry says
Such a fun new release tonight! My first supplies were really big folk art rabbit stamps. I think I still have them, it’s hard to part with the stamps that started this fun hobby for me.
MaryB says
The lady who got me started in stamping was a demo for SU, so those were the first supplies I bought – cardstock, ink, stamps, and ribbon. Thanks for a great release, and for the chance to win a gift certificate!

I went to a Creative Memories Party given by a friend. I was annoyed by another “buy” party. I was completely enthralled and bought almost everything they had. I was a die hard from that moment on. I think I’m the only one that does it from that party. I’ve developed as product has too. I do altered art, cards, canvas art, bottles, and the occasional mini album. I’ve been a Papertrey Ink fan from the beginning!
Eileen M says
I started with a stamping up party, so got inks, paper and stamps. Another great release with some very creative products!

I picked up some basics from my local craft store, but my first purchase online was from PTI, back in 2009 called Blooming Button Bits, Turning A New Leaf, and Giga Guide Lines. I’ve been a faithful shopper ever since, and have many, many more PTI stamp sets in my collection.

Besides a simple angel stamp and some ink, one of my first purchases was a paper trimmer.

Many, many, MANY years ago I went to a DOTS party and bought a couple of Christmas stamps and some basics – don’t even remember. I told my husband I would save money making them myself…hahahahahaha!! I found PTI through a rubber stamp magazine (remember those??) and a serious addiction was born! Thank you PTI for another great release!
Jennifer L. says
My first exposure to stamping was an SU! party. I think I bought some wood block stamps and an ink pad with multiple colors in one pad. I almost quit stamping around 2007 due to having kids and wood block stamps taking up so much space. But then somebody introduced me to PTI…

Lisa K says
I started scrapbooking before I started stamping. I remember thinking “why buy stamps when you can use them once and then you’re done? I would only use it on one page.” Boy was I wrong. Stamps can be used over and over and in so many ways. I have long stopped scrapbooking but my stamps remain. I already have card stock and adhesive so I guess my first supplies included ink, acrylic blocks and stamps of course. What a great hobby. 🙂
