My mom is my super hero. She’s a “mamma bear” who’s always been there for me, through thick and thin. I can ALWAYS count on her to have my back. She would do anything for me. She always turned to me, especially after my father would say something belittling to a goal or about women, and tell me that there isn’t anything I can’t do. She supports my dreams, and I can’t thank her enough for that. Everybody needs somebody to tell them and really believe at the same time, “You can do it.”

Without a doubt my Dad (stepfather). He is the only parent out of my 4 that had any sense of responsibility, duty, and selflessness. I was not always the most likable teenager in the world. As I’ve raised my teenagers (who were not half as sassy as I was), I think to myself, he chose my brother and I. He could have left at any time, but he loved us and would have given his last pair of shoes in the dead of winter to make sure we had what we needed. (He almost did, but thanks to Duct Tape, the day was saved. LOL) He passed away way too young at the age of 46. That was 14 years ago and I miss him every day.

I think the idea and word “hero” is used too often for people who don’t deserve it. People should just be valued for who they are and what they do in everyday life. Despite his cut ears (that’s how we found him as a kitten), blind eye and chronic nose problems (caused by an infection he had when we found him) and a stiff leg (caused by a broken leg and subsequent operation), he is a one of a kind cat that gives more love than all our other cats together (and they are very loving as well). I have 3 sons – all grown – who have all achieved the rank of Eagle Scout many years ago. Their scoutmaster, who is 95 years old now and STILL the active scoutmaster, is my hero. I have watched him over the past 25 years take boys, some of them with troubling behaviors, and help them become resourceful and respectful young men. He has helped them learn far more than how to tie knots and build campfires – everyone of the boys has benefited from their association with the troop. He has given, and continues to give, so much of himself to mentoring these young people to become assets to our community and society in general. He is definitely a hero to me.

My super-hero is my sister. As a military wife, she lived with the fear that her husband might not return from Iraq, as she stayed back in the States, keeping their four kids happy and busy. She spent six months on bedrest three different times in order to carry those kids to term. I can’t count how many times she pulled up stakes, left behind great jobs and pack up the kids’ belongings when the military or Grainger mandated that he change states. And she never complains about it. I know plenty of military spouses go through this, but she’s my superhero!

My parents together are my superhero. Although they would rarely work side-by-side on anything – they knew their limits – my parents made an amazing team by complementing each other. They worked together to build an amazing life and make a carefree home (at least, it seemed like that to a child). They showed me how to be faith-filled, respect others, work hard, have fun and appreciate all I have.

My son Andrew is secretly my super-hero. He was born with congenital heart disease and despite 3 open heart surgeries and countless procedures he is still living life and smiling. There have been two moments in time that I have realized he is as strong as any superhero ever could be. The first, while my husband and I were buying our first home and he got deployed to the desert leaving me to close and move by myself with two boys at the ages of 10 and 13. I was having a particularly bad day and my superhero walked up to me, wrapped his arms around me as i cried, and said, “I know it feels like the weight of the world is on your shoulders mom but I am here to help you hold it up.” I couldn’t control the sobs that followed that. And the second time was when his heart muscle was showing some signs of more dysfunction and I asked him this question. “If your cardiologist tells you that it is because the wear and tear and the exertion of marching band that is causing this issue are you going to stop?” And he responded with the most heroic answer I could have imagined. He said, “If I can’t live my life enjoying doing the things that I want to then what would be the point?” Needless to say he had continued to march…CARRYING A TUBA! Like every superhero should be, my son is brave, courageous, kind and loving. My son is my superhero. Everyday.

This is a hard question to answer. I have way too many Super Hero’s. Every little girl sees her dad as a super hero who can do anything. And of course we all hope to be like our moms – super efficient Jills-of-All-Trades not to mention great cooks. As we grow up we are surrounded by friends who do their parts as super heroes – who could beat the closeness of friends who are always there to share in great moments like the birth of my son or for a shoulder to cry on like when I found out I had cancer. And then comes along a husband and family of your own to love, share with, smile with, to cry with or about and grow old with. But as all these super heroes love you, they’ll never love you as much as the Biggest Super Hero of All – Jesus Christ who is the always there!! Thank you Lord for being my Heavenly Super Hero and allowing me to have so many earthly super heroes. I am truly blessed.

Hi Nichole,
My superheroes are my mom and dad. But my dad was the one close to my heart, he passed away 30 years ago and there is not a day that I wish he was here with me.
I was his little girl and he showed me how much he loved me in so many special ways, he was the role model to imitate, kind, compassionate, hardworking, good sense of humor, humble, honest, trustworthy and loving, and he was soooo handsome!. Ever since he passed away I have been living without half of my heart and I would give anything, even my PTI stamps and dies for just one minute with him to tell him how much I miss him and that throughout these years my love for him never wavered. I could go on and on writing about him but I can’s because I am sobbing my eyes out and cannot see the keyboard.
Cariños,
María alba
