When found, her RA thought she was drunk and sent her to the city drunk tank, campus security never picked her up so she got herself back to campus. 3,000 miles away she took care of herself. We found out 2 years later from someone else. She is strong and resilient; she is principled and will stand up for her principles at significant cost to herself if necessary. She is beautiful and creative and smart and wise and just learned to knit from watching Youtube! She is my hero!

My super-hero right now is my mom. My dad had a cardiac arrest on Dec. 20th, 2014 and was on life support until Dec. 30th, when he passed away: my parents’ 56th wedding anniversary. My mom was the strongest of all of us that day; the day she married, then lost, the man she loved. Heavy hearts…but your release over these past few days has several times over lifted my spirits. Thank you!

My mom is my super hero. She’s a “mamma bear” who’s always been there for me, through thick and thin. I can ALWAYS count on her to have my back. She would do anything for me. She always turned to me, especially after my father would say something belittling to a goal or about women, and tell me that there isn’t anything I can’t do. She supports my dreams, and I can’t thank her enough for that. Everybody needs somebody to tell them and really believe at the same time, “You can do it.”

Without a doubt my Dad (stepfather). He is the only parent out of my 4 that had any sense of responsibility, duty, and selflessness. I was not always the most likable teenager in the world. As I’ve raised my teenagers (who were not half as sassy as I was), I think to myself, he chose my brother and I. He could have left at any time, but he loved us and would have given his last pair of shoes in the dead of winter to make sure we had what we needed. (He almost did, but thanks to Duct Tape, the day was saved. LOL) He passed away way too young at the age of 46. That was 14 years ago and I miss him every day.

She means the world to me and I thank God for her every day.

I have 3 sons – all grown – who have all achieved the rank of Eagle Scout many years ago. Their scoutmaster, who is 95 years old now and STILL the active scoutmaster, is my hero. I have watched him over the past 25 years take boys, some of them with troubling behaviors, and help them become resourceful and respectful young men. He has helped them learn far more than how to tie knots and build campfires – everyone of the boys has benefited from their association with the troop. He has given, and continues to give, so much of himself to mentoring these young people to become assets to our community and society in general. He is definitely a hero to me.

My super-hero is my sister. As a military wife, she lived with the fear that her husband might not return from Iraq, as she stayed back in the States, keeping their four kids happy and busy. She spent six months on bedrest three different times in order to carry those kids to term. I can’t count how many times she pulled up stakes, left behind great jobs and pack up the kids’ belongings when the military or Grainger mandated that he change states. And she never complains about it. I know plenty of military spouses go through this, but she’s my superhero!

    Shannon Baker says:

My son Andrew is secretly my super-hero. He was born with congenital heart disease and despite 3 open heart surgeries and countless procedures he is still living life and smiling. There have been two moments in time that I have realized he is as strong as any superhero ever could be. The first, while my husband and I were buying our first home and he got deployed to the desert leaving me to close and move by myself with two boys at the ages of 10 and 13. I was having a particularly bad day and my superhero walked up to me, wrapped his arms around me as i cried, and said, “I know it feels like the weight of the world is on your shoulders mom but I am here to help you hold it up.” I couldn’t control the sobs that followed that. And the second time was when his heart muscle was showing some signs of more dysfunction and I asked him this question. “If your cardiologist tells you that it is because the wear and tear and the exertion of marching band that is causing this issue are you going to stop?” And he responded with the most heroic answer I could have imagined. He said, “If I can’t live my life enjoying doing the things that I want to then what would be the point?” Needless to say he had continued to march…CARRYING A TUBA! Like every superhero should be, my son is brave, courageous, kind and loving. My son is my superhero. Everyday.

This is a hard question to answer. I have way too many Super Hero’s. Every little girl sees her dad as a super hero who can do anything. And of course we all hope to be like our moms – super efficient Jills-of-All-Trades not to mention great cooks. As we grow up we are surrounded by friends who do their parts as super heroes – who could beat the closeness of friends who are always there to share in great moments like the birth of my son or for a shoulder to cry on like when I found out I had cancer. And then comes along a husband and family of your own to love, share with, smile with, to cry with or about and grow old with. But as all these super heroes love you, they’ll never love you as much as the Biggest Super Hero of All – Jesus Christ who is the always there!! Thank you Lord for being my Heavenly Super Hero and allowing me to have so many earthly super heroes. I am truly blessed.

I, too, would have to say that my super hero is my husband. We have been married for 45 years…..he has been a wonderful father to our 2 daughters and the best grandpa that our 6 grandchildren could ask for. His quiet, unassuming nature belies the strong, devoted man he has always been.

    Cynthia Baldwin says:

My mom is my hero. For a while growing up, she supported our whole family with her job, and then came home and made dinner/cared for us. Now, my dad is having so many physical problems that Mom has become his caregiver. She went to see her Mom/my grandmother for a couple of weeks, and my sisters and I cared for our dad…we never realized how hard it is!! My mom is a saint. <3

    Sharron A. says:

My super-heros are my Mom and Dad. Although they have both passed away, they taught me how to live life and be productive and to fight for what I thought to be right and not to give up. They both fought cancer with grace and dignity and left a hole in my world that I only hope I can look through and see that I have made them proud.
