Melissa Phillips is taking you to era of Impressionism next. This style of painting has always designated with people because of the feelings and emotions it can capture in a way that many other styles cannot compare. One of the most famous Impressionists is of course Claude Monet. Check out this short biography about him along with further details as to how Impressionism got its name.
As a special treat I thought I would share this rare video footage of Claude Monet himself painting near his famous water lily garden. What an honor to get to see a true master at work!
Melissa says, “My project uses white embossing powder combined with ink to create layers that mimic a soft and romantic look, similar to that found in Impressionistic Art. With the combination of water, this technique takes on a very ethereal feel and is one that has become a favorite of mine.”

MELISSA’S MASTER TIPS:
- The “white space” or areas created with the use of the embossing powder, really help in achieving the softened effect. By doubling up on the application of the embossing powder, you create even more “white space” allowing you to bring light and softness to your project.
- Manet and other Impressionistic artists, created very soft, blurred images, with subtle detail. This can be achieved by stamping your final, detailed stamp layer over the embossing image, being careful to offset this layer a bit. You’re using the very same stamp, but with your chosen ink color. By offsetting the final layer slightly, portions of it will show, not the entire image, allowing for subtle details to show amidst the white embossing.
- The application of water really aids in achieving the Impressionistic feel. When you use water, you’ll notice that this softens colors through blending, taking away sharp edges and lines, and creating a beautiful flow between colors.
–Now it’s your turn! Use your paper crafting supplies to create an impressionistic look. You can choose to re-create the exact project from Melissa above or design your own using the same concepts. Your project must also incorporate at least one Papertrey product.

All I can say is that you are amazing Melissa! I tried and tried with the flower sets I have, and could not recreate this look. I tried it with Leaf Prints and like the look, but not sure it is accurate for Impressionism. It was fun to try though!

Thanks Melissa! My style leans more towards big and bold most times, so your session was a good reminder for me that sometimes, it’s okay to tone things down a bit.
