Yes, I’ve loved water coloring since my college days, which was a long time ago! I hadn’t painted in quite some time until the trend started up in papercrafting and cardmaking. I LOVE it! It’s even more fun to watercolor with all the new tools and mediums available today!

  • 6
    Julie C says:

I love the idea of watercoloring but have only tried it a few times. My biggest fear is not doing “messy” right. I try to hard to make my regular projects just right, that letting go of staying inside the lines is intimidating!

  • 7
    Kathy D says:

I do enjoy watercoloring, and I am trying to include it more in my projects. I think I use it maybe 5% of the time now (and lots of watercolor paper in the scrap pile – I need more practice!).

  • 8
    sallie says:

I love watercoloring on cards!!….usually on 140# watercolor paper and using traditional tube watercolors. I do at least one card a week with watercolors…find it fast and easy.

  • 9
    Amanda says:

Watercoloring is fun. It’s not my go-to method, but when it’s right I pull the stuff out. I use it from time to time. I just never have enough time for all I want to do.

  • 10
    Angie V says:

Yes I love watercoloring.I think my favorite technique would have to be embossing, then watercoloring over the top of it and then wiping the embossing off. Most of my ideas come from the wonderful examples of the papertreyink team!

  • 11

I started watercoloring last month and am absolutely loving it. I find that I get “lost” in it and it is very relaxing and fun.

  • 17
    Ann Merry says:

I love watercoloring! I have taken several watercolor classes taught by Junelle Jacobsen. The way I incorporate watercoloring into cardmaking is to sketch and paint a card front; photo it and enhance in Photoshop, then make prints to adhere to card bases. It certainly speeds up cardmaking, and allows me to create in bulk; I usually package up a set of notecards to give as a gift.

  • 18
    Liz mcallister says:

I love all the techniques you can do with water colors. I use them with at least 1/3 of my cards. I was hesitant at first. But after trying realize it is easy and fun

  • 23

It rarely seems to turn out quite right, so those unfinished cards often end up in the waste basket. It is something I would love to work on, though. Ironically, I come from a family of three generations of women who watercolor!

  • 35

I do enjoy watercoloring but am still trying to perfect my backgrounds. My goal is to create backgrounds like Kay Miller.

  • 88
    DGolly says:

I love the look of watercolors and use the technique occasionally. It’s a hard medium for me because I tend to be a perfectionist and keep reworking until I like it, watercolors don’t work that way, but they are teaching me to just run with it and make it work.

  • 102
    Donna Gourley says:

I enjoy watercoloring but don’t use it as often as probably should. The way my craft room is set up, it’s more of a “process” to get everything out in order to do it so I tend to watercolor in batches. I’m sometimes frustrated by the results as well (if they don’t end up looking like samples I see). I know more practice is probably key to better results. I do love the samples I see others create.

I like playing with distress inks for backgrounds.
I do that on about 40% of my cards. I don’t really watercolor because I’m not good at coloring in general and the imprecise nature of watercolor is at odds with my perfectionism. πŸ˜‰

  • 135
    Jackie says:

I enjoy seeing what others have done with watercoloring, but struggle with it myself. I think it’s probably an issue of trying to control it and stay inside the lines, when that isn’t the purpose of watercolor πŸ™‚ I haven’t given up, though. I still practice and hope to get better with it.

  • 136

I love water coloring and use it often. I love how the design is always different and so soft. I just got the new Zig Clean Color brushes and I think I am in Love.

I don’t use this technique very often though, mostly for backgrounds.

  • 138
    Marcie Rhys says:

I love the look of watercolors! One of my favorite techniques is its use with embossing powders. Because I do little embossing (relatively more laborious set up for it), maybe I need to emboss several designs at a time, and watercolor them as I need them. My favorite combo – white embossing powder + white card stock + brushed on Papertrey refill colors applied with a water brush.

Thanks for helping me think about a different way of approaching using them.

  • 139

  • 142

I just love the look of watercolors on cards! I have watercolored the background on many cards. I have been experimenting with inexpensive watercolor paints, nice watercolor pencils, and Distress inks. At the moment, I’m saving for the Gansai Tambi set. I love the look of these highly-pigmented colors! β™‘

  • 146
    Meg says:

I love the look of watercoloring on cards, but I can’t seem to get the technique down. I use too much water trying to soften the colors and the paper gets misshapen and warped. Would love more tutorials.

  • 148

  • 149
    Dee says:

Enjoy might be a bit strong but I do like to try it occasionally. I am just learning this technique – my OCD struggles with freeform but I LOVE the look when I’m done. My favorite technique is embossing outline stamps and coloring them in. Lately I tried just making watercolor background paper and using it for die cuts such as butterflies – really nice effect!

  • 152
    Kari D says:

I LOVE ‘smooshing’ and find I am using in more and more as a background (both bold and soft). I love the look of watercolor and tried the MIM of stamping in a light color ink and then watercoloring over it to make it appear as though I had actually painted the image freehand. Alas, I have learned, I am not that artistic! Sigh!

  • 153

  • 267
    chris says:

Watercolor is one of my favorite ways to use as a background for cards. I use it when appropriate on cards, and I’m now trying my hand at flowers, though I have to cut and paste these flowers to the cards, because I’m way too messy to do it directly.

  • 268

I have always LOVED watercoloring. There’s something so ethereal about it. I do it often on my cards, just about every time.

  • 269
    merryf says:

I’m getting more comfortable experimenting with watercolor with my zig markers and the smooshing technique. I have to stop being afraid of making a mistake — there is no such thing as a mistake in art!

  • 270

I love watercolor techniques! I still consider myself a beginner and I am still trying to decide exactly what media I like (pencils, Zig, Peerless or may try some others . . .). I would probably use it more but I find I am make most cards at the last minute and don’t have the luxury of time to wait for the card to dry. But my two goals for cardmaking this year is to plan ahead and to do more watercoloring!

  • 271

  • 273

I absolutely love this release! And to answer the question, I do love water coloring! I have only tried it on my cards once though. I didn’t care for the type of water colors I had so I’m saving up for a good brand that I feel will be much nicer for card use.

I love the look of watercolor on cards and have created quite a few cards using this medium – especially with floral images!

  • 276

Yes, I watercolour! I have the Kuretake watercolour set and a pack of 24 Zig markers. I’m still just a dabbler with them, but try to make something once a week with them. It’s not as fast as making a card with PP.

  • 280
    Gwen says:

I love watercoloring and think I am improving…..I use it quite a bit as it makes such fun, easy backgrounds. Also works well if I heat emboss shapes first!
    Love the release!

  • 281
    Dana says:

I LOVE the effect of watercoloring! I’ve dabbled a time or two but I haven’t gotten comfortable with it. I keep telling myself I just need to get “this” tool or remember “that” technique, but I don’t remember anything. I’ve got to set aside time to binge watch tutorials and then try them out until I develop my own style. πŸ™‚

  • 282

I love Water-coloring and I do include it on a lot of cards, but it takes me a long time to find my groove after I haven’t done it in awhile. I would love to see a great reference to water coloring techniques to reference when I do it! I love this months release!

  • 283

  • 284

I absolutely love watercolors! I started watercolor painting when my middle school art teacher introduced me to it, and I’ve taken several classes as a student and as an adult. I often include it in my mixed media pieces, particularly ATCs. I do need to include it in my cards more, though!

  • 293
    Heather says:

I think it’s a fun technique but I have tried it several times and just can’t seem to nail it. I do believe it’s beautiful as long as I am not the one implementing it, haha!

I love the look of watercolors, but didn’t like my results with tube colors trying to paint a picture when I took classes years ago. With all the great news ways to use inks and pan watercolors with stamped and die cut images I’m in love with what I can do! I only use watercolor on 25% of my papercrafting projects, but I love the looks I get and enjoy the process, too!

  • 297
    Peege04 says:

I’ve dabbled very little with watercoloring. I’ve only used the technique to make my own paper for backgrounds or to die cut. I’d love to try some of the looks that make it seem you’ve hand painted the image, but just haven’t gotten to that yet. Maybe I will now!

  • 298

  • 309

  • 311

  • 312
    Michele F says:

I especially like water-coloring heat-embossed images – helps to stay within the lines! but really fun to go outside them, too! I will be trying a new WC paper this week – it will mean practice, practice, practice!

  • 315
    Michele W says:

I love the look of watercoloring but am just learning how to do it. I’m experimenting to learn how much water to put down first and when or when to just go direct to paper. I’m hoping to make this year’s St. Patrick’s Day cards with a watercolor background but it depends on how my practice goes.

  • 316
    Michele F says:

I LOve water-coloring heat-embossed images – whether I stay within the lines, or not! I’m trying out a new WC paper this week – practice makes nearly perfect! Do you have a favorite to use? LOvely release this month!!!

  • 317
    MaryB says:

Over the past year I’ve bought all the supplies to watercolor, and probably way more supplies than actually needed. I want to practice more before actually using it on a project, because of course it needs to look artistic instead of just a hot mess! Thanks for the chance to win a gift certificate – it would be used up in an instant!

  • 318

  • 319
    Lisa Ann M says:

I LOVE water coloring and have been using it on card fronts, layouts, 3D projects and more. I’m loving that I can do a whole background and then die cut elements from it. It’s put my patterned paper out of business these days though:)

  • 320

I love watercoloring but rarely use it on cards – probably because it seems like a lot more effort to get the stuff out to do it, which isn’t true – it’s just a mind block I have, I guess!

  • 325
    Joyce M. says:

Yes, I enjoy water coloring. I do it on about 1 or 2 cards a month.

  • 326
    Donna says:

I have discovered that watercoloring is my absolute favorite medium for cardmaking and art! I almost always include it somehow whether it’s on a background or a focal image. I’ve had one-on-one instruction from an artist and I have and am taking different online classes to discover more about the technique and the different types of watercolor mediums available! Everyone should try it! It’s very forgiving and you can get great results with little effort!

  • 327
    JanetB says:

I have tried watercoloring, and I am always inspired by other projects I see on line, but I don’t feel I do it very well. It looks so easy when other people do it, but not for me. I will keep trying πŸ™‚ Julie C said something that I understand about watercolors, having a fear of not doing messy right, and letting go of staying in the lines. Yes, practice, practice.

  • 328
    Barb W says:

I haven’t done a lot of watercoloring, but with my new Zip Real Brushes, I’m ready to start. Seeing Dawn’s watercolor pre-printed Blossoms and the Butterfly cards this release makes it exciting to try. I hope that the DT will come up with more of the pre-printed fronts for watercoloring.

  • 329

    Well…enjoy…not really.
I have been inspired by the design team and Dawn’s Vintage Floral.
I need to invest in a small Zig set! I have colored a few and used them…

  • 333

  • 337

I love the look of watercoloring, but I’m not comfortable with it yet. Thank goodness the trend continues, so I keep trying!

  • 338
    Vicki says:

I like the look of watercoloring, but I don’t actually enjoy doing it very much. I don’t like the way the paper warps – I can never get it flat again. I don’t like the way watercolor has a texture that won’t allow me to get crisp lines if I stamp over top of it. I really do enjoy looking at what other people do with it, though, and wish mine looked as good, but I don’t enjoy it enough to practice.

  • 339
    Julia Aston says:

I love the look of water coloring on cards – and although I have lots of supplies to use for water coloring – I’ve only actually used it a handful of times! never enough hours in the day!

  • 342
    Amy Gutknecht says:

I’ve never tried watercolor paints on cards, but I use watercolor pencils all the time. I think the reason I don’t use watercolor paints on cards is that I’m afraid I’ll use too much water and the paper will crinkle. I’ll have to practice!

I do really enjoy watercoloring. I am just starting to include it on my cards and really like it.

I do watercolor pieces but not on cards yet, I’ve designed a jewelery box and the top is like a shaker card so the image inside I stamp with embossing powder and do water coloring for a sweet soft and whimsical look, then I add my sequins and place a thick acetate on top to seal it, I use a lot your Petite places dies and stamps to create the scenes so I’m beyond happy yo see the new Cottagge Petite places adition, I can create a bigger town with them… Keep them coming I’m a HUGE fan…

  • 346
    Kathie B says:

I do enjoy water coloring but I don’t do it often enough. Sometimes I’m in too much of a hurry to take out the supplies and do all the prep for water coloring. I need to give myself a day to take the supplies out and then just play all day…and into the night!

  • 347
    Diana F says:

I’m pretty sure I would enjoy it, but haven’t given it a try yet. Not sure why. Looks like a lot of fun but I think a project can look real messy real fast if you don’t do it right. That is one of my things I want to do this year. So hopefully I will be giving it a try real soon.

Yes, I have “dipped” into watercoloring and smooshing on my cards some but need more practice. Everyone else’s seems to look better to me than my own. Guess it’s because I never really felt artistic, and this puts me a bit out of my comfort zone. Practice, practice, practice!

I love to use watercolors but I rarely do. I’m more of a Copic girl. Also, many of my stamps are solid and even though I know there’s ways of using them with watercolors, my honest answer is – I don’t think of it.

  • 406
    Marisa R says:

I love the look of water colouring but haven’t done any yet – limiting factor is time to learn the basics of how to do it as well as budget to get supplies.

I water colored for the first time since elementary school right before Christmas. I loved it! I was a little hesitant at first but I really enjoyed it and will be using it more on cards in the future. It’s my new favorite technique! I think watercoloring is pretty on others’ cards but it’s difficult for me to do it myself. The ‘messy’ results are harder for me as my brain tends to the precise methods. I would love to have some Zig Markers to try it out with as it seems easy and i love the shading with only a few markers.

    Greta H says:

I love the look of watercolor, but mostly I “cheat” by inking a stamp & spritzing it before stamping. However, I did buy some Zig Real Brush markers awhile ago (got them cheap on Amazon!) & finally had success with them on a card that will post tomorrow on my blog. Heather’s use of them is one of the reasons I got them & now I’m so glad I did!

My DH gave me a set of wonderful watercolor brushes for Christmas. πŸ™‚ Sitting down just now to look at the release in review, I honestly was just thinking how happy I am that PTI is embracing the trend on watercolors. I love the look of watercoloring! Especially on flowers and leaves and behind words. I like an open flower die or butterfly over a watercolor background. I haven’t been including it lately – I think it is seems to be more of a spring and summer design for my cards! There are so many new products to try for the technique but I think I tend to stick to my basic stash.

  • 444
    Kara says:

I haven’t tried it. It seems messy and time consuming, and I don’t have the supplies I need to do it. I have enough other trends that I like more that I’m putting my time, energy, and money into.

this technique applicable. Congrats, it is an amazing production. Cheers

I LOVE the look of watercoloring on all the cards I see, and I have attempted it a couple of times. I think the thing that is keeping me from doing it more, is that I really don’t know how. Mutzy Mia says:

I have done very little watercoloring but I do like the look of it….actually it’s been years since I’ve done it. So, obviously I don’t use it on cards. I think one of the reasons I don’t is that I’m usually making a card because I need it NOW and I’m short on time. So to let the card dry plus get out the extra supplies to use adds time to my already tight schedule. I seem to never have the luxury of just “playing” with my supplies…maybe some day.

  • 522
    Beth M. says:

I have also done some watercolor pieces that are framed in my apartment and that I have given as gifts. I would love to get a Gansai Tambi set next!

I love to watercolour on my cards, whether it’s creating a smooshed background, or colouring stamped and embossed images. I probably use it about a third of the time when I’m creating cards. Tracey says:

I’m still fairly new to watercoloring. I’ve been papercrafting for about a year and a half, but it’s only been in the past few months that I’ve added watercoloring to cards. It was intimidating at first because I generally don’t think I’m very artistic. But after getting over my initial fears (and getting the fabulous Zig real brush markers!) I’m finding it tons of fun. Now I love experimenting with different techniques and colors. I’d say that watercoloring now accounts for about 10% of the cards I make.

I DO enjoy watercoloring. One my last two cards, I watercolored an image on one, and did a watercolored background, and sentiment on the other. I probably do some form of it on about 1/4 of the cards I make. I can’t wait to put that frame set together with watercoloring. Thank you!

Now that I’m getting better at watercoloring, I’m doing it more. Up to now, I’ve been using watercolor primarily on my drawings. Now that there are so many great stamps that are watercolor-able, I’m using it more and more on cards. I use watercolor in all its forms, paint, pencil, markers, crayons, and powder :0D

  • 650
    Susan says:

I love the look of watercolour and I do it on some of my cards. I would like to incorporate it more often. When I’m making a card, I’m often in a rush so I just turn to the easy straight-forward stamping.

  • 651

I’ve never tried watercolors on cards/projects now that I’m older, although I think we’ve all done it as kids! I think my style preference leans towards the clean lines/simple look more that I would never think it looked right!

I own the watercolors, the Zig brush markers and the watercolor paper, but I must admit I’m too rigid a personality to be content with my results. I prefer the exactness of Copic markers. I do appreciate most of the watercolor efforts of others but I must admit I don’t care for every piece. Just being honest.

I do love watercoloring but I’m not very good at this technique. I love the look of watercolor and “coloring outside the lines”. I need to learn more about watercoloring.

  • 674
    Florence P says:

I haven’t tried water coloring yet–the prospect daunts me. However, I love the soft effects of it, and will try it out once my confidence is bold enough to jumpstart ME. Also, the idea of investing in all the tools and “paint” keeps me reined in; at 65 years old, I should be downsizing instead of upsizing my crafting expenses.

  • 675
    Barbara M says:

No not really. It just not my favorite thing. I buy stamps and things to give impression views of watercolor effect . Also my space is limited that more water, splats and mess is just not worth it. There is still plenty to do and buy to keep me creative happy.

  • 676

I love watercolors. More so now that I’ve gotten “older”. πŸ˜‰ I haven’t really done any myself… At least not in the last 15 years. I did just get some water color chalks that would go perfect with some of the stamps! πŸ™‚

    Barbara Barnes says:

I love watercolor!! I am just too controlling with it. Need to learn how to be messy and spontaneous; there are some amazing card artists out there (Kay Miller being one of them) who make watercoloring look so easy and hit it out of the park. I would say I use it on my cards about 30 to 40 percent of the time, either by coloring with dye inks or my zig markers.

i love to watercolour, i have to make my self stop doing it as i know people like different types of cards.

  • 707

I DO love watercolouring! My blender pens are some of my favourite tools in my card making arsenal. The only thing that occasionally stops me is drying time and/or the thickness of the paper I’m using. PTI’s card stock holds up well to water and doesn’t warp unless I get really carried away. I can’t wait to experiment with some of the new butterflies!
