But I am also blessed to see blue heron and bald eagles on my walks near the lake by my home and their majesty takes my breath away!

Becky Brooks says
I’m certain I’m not alone in choosing the cardinal as my favorite. I’ve also been surprised to hear others say that one reason is the same as one of mine. My mom was a lover of the color red…dresses, shoes, purses, cars, front doors, scarves, gloves, coats. You name it, if it came in red she chose it. And, she loved birds. Cardinals in particular were her fave. We always kidded her and told her it must be because they are red. She denied that and said she loved their song. She could even whistle the song of a cardinal well enough to summon them to our back yard. She’s gone now, but every time I see a cardinal I feel like she’s making a visit. I’ve learned that other people experience this feeling when they spot a cardinal. Must be something to it.

I don’t know that I have a favorite bird species, now, but I remember the first birds that really interested me. I read Mr. Pudgins when I was a child. It was about a crazy babysitter who traveled by bathtub and had a pet Dodo bird. I had never heard of that type of bird, and it led me to learn about them. I’ve always been interested in homing pigeons and how they were used to carry messages during WWI.

We sat her up and wheeled her very close to the window so that she could see them. Those are wonderful memories for me.

When I was a child, I always loved Blue Jays. Something about that pop of blue color among the red and brown hues of nature intrigued me. A few years ago while visiting my mother in Michigan, we were watching the birds at the feeder outside her dining room window, and we spotted the brightest blue bird I’d ever seen. It was smaller and brighter than blue jays. We both wondered what bird it was, and research showed it to be a Blue Bunting. So, now, blue buntings are my favorite bird.

Great release!!

I love so many birds, but bluejays are right up there. Once a neighborhood cat caught a blue at my birdfeeder and ran off with me and several of the bluejays friends following behind. The birds flew faster than I can run and I see the cat being dive bombed by the other jays and it releases the one in it’s mouth and runs off. The jay that had been captured sits for a minute, shakes itself off and flies off with it’s buddies.
I also love them because of their brilliant blue coloring, their curiosity and that they have a range of songs from squawky “hey yous” to more chirpy “hello theres”.

Yellow finch. Native American culture holds the finch as a bird of happiness, since they’re so brightly-colored, and their flight patterns are joyful, ebullient, a bouncy, joyful pattern of bobbing through the air in complete delight. Finches symbolize ‘bright times ahead’ or ‘bright days on the horizon. Also love the chickadee.

It would be my favorite because of Isaiah 40:31 “Yet those who wait for the Lord will gain new strength; They will mount up with wings like eagles,
They will run and not get tired, They will walk and not become weary.” Eagles are a beautiful, strong, majestic bird. (But I’ll still keep my distance and watch from afar 😉 lol)

It’s hard to narrow it down to one particular kind of bird with all the different species God created, and each one so unique in its song and look. I think I am particularly fond of sparrows, though, because of Jesus’ reminder not to worry because the Lord is aware when even a sparrow falls, and we are worth much more than many sparrows. Such a comforting passage when we are going through difficult times to know God is aware of every detail in our lives and cares deeply for us.

Oooh….this is a tough question for me! I love all of my backyard birds but I think my favorites are the cute little wrens. They are very inquisitive and aren’t afraid to come right up to my glass sliding doors if there is some stray seed or other bit of yum near the doors. I think my second favorite are the downy woodpeckers, because they can be pretty funny. They try to hide themselves behind the upright spindles of my deck railing, as if no one can see them there even though they are twice as wide as the spindle! LOL I get a LOT of enjoyment from watching my birds while I eat my meals at the kitchen table. 🙂

Fortunately, a new technology came out and I have an implant and can still hear the birds. I am grateful every time I hear the meadow lark’s song.

I never had a favorite bird until my mother passed away. All of a sudden, a cardinal began appearing in my backyard. The bird comes by all of the time now, and I can honestly say, I had NEVER seen it before. Sometimes when I’m just thinking of my mom, the bird will appear.
So, the cardinal is, by far, my favorite bird.
Suzanne Reynolds says

Penny J says
I cannot say I have a favorite because I love them all!
When we are camping at the beach it is fun to watch them dig in the sand and then run when the water gets too close. Or to watch the seagulls dive bomb into the water for a fish. When we are camping in the woods we see cardinals, bluejay’s, robins or some beautiful black & white bird….not sure if it is a Magpie or what. We get hummingbirds that like the flowers on all the lantana planted throughout our community which are fun to watch with their wings flapping 100 mph.
Each has it’s own beauty and quirky little ways of doing things……something I find fascinating.
Prima Yucco says
I like wood pecker. When I hear the sound of them, it makes me feel peace.

Without a second thought, my favorite bird is the mockingbird. He fills the morning and evening with wonderful song – a long song praising God in the morning for a new day and a bit quieter one at night giving thanks. The American Bald Eagle.
Not only because it is so majestic and absolutely stunning in flight…there’s one that has nested at the end of our road and we get to see him/her taking off into flight often…
but because they represent freedom.
Mel H says
I like cardinals. Not only are they my favorite baseball team but I like the story about them being our loved ones coming back to see us and make us feel better.
Susan W. says
My favorite bird is our state bird – the California quail. We usually have a family somewhere in our backyard and they are so cute/comical when you see them scurrying around. They are not good fliers and must resort to running quickly with their little feet. It is even more precious when dad and mom are followed by their wee ones.
Ingrid says
My favorite is the cardinal. When I see a bright red male cardinal in the bare winter trees, it brightens up my day!
Helen F. says

Love the collection. I will say the cardinal. I was once told that when you see a cardinal, a loved one who has passed is letting you know they are around.
Debra says
Chickadees remind me of my father (who passed away in 2011)–always busy and hopping around, puffed up and trying to stay warm (he wore so many layers when he was out plowing snow), sounding fussy as he went about his day….But in truth, he was sweet and tender and I miss how he whistled off-key when he was happy with the outcome of whatever project he was working on.

No question… Bluebirds. I have 2 BB houses in my back yard, & love to watch them. They begin building their nests in Feb, then once the babies are born, they are so busy bringing nourishment to the little ones. I’ve gotten some wonderful pics of the mom feeding the hungry babes, with their heads out througn the house hole & their mouths wide open. And they’re so beautiful!

So many amazing projects … so much fantastic inspiration … thank you ladies! I’m rather fond of the Hoopoe … wonderful colouring, a lovely crown, and they nest with us every year! Anita 🙂
Reva says
A favorite bird–my list is long. Hummers I know they will arrive at my feeder March 20th–the male dive bombs me. “I have returned” he says. For the past 26 years I make sure my feeders are full. The Rufus Sided Towhee is secretive and it ruffles the ground searching for food. Red breasted Nuthatch is so sociable you can almost touch them at the feeders. And the woodpeckers who finally decided that suet feeders might be a bit better than my cedar sided house. Birds make my day!
SueB (UK) says
Mine is the Robin – I’ve always loved the childhood story about how the robin got its red breast, plus its association with Christmas (my favourite time of year) makes it a winner hands down. Living in a city I don’t see many colourful birds – mainly brown sparrows – but I do have 2 robins who live in my garden who provide a lovely splash of colour all year round. They sit & wait patiently each morning for me to fill up the bird feeders & have got so used to me that they don’t fly off when I get near to them!
Brenda Lee says

The dove. It represents peace and love !

Wow, how to choose… Gorgeous cardinals and steadfast chickadees come to mind right away, and then I think of the loons of Maine, majestic eagles and ospreys and great blue herons, the dark-eyed juncos that come to winter in MY backyard (in Massachusetts) as if it were a walk in the park…
but I think as a species I most admire the beautiful and various hummingbirds in the world, not only for their jewel colors and fantastic feathers, but for the sheer power of their tiny wings.
char says

Tere Azua says
The Finch Birds are my favorite. After getting married, my husband and I realized that having babies could not be one of our blessings. I became very depressed, and was feeling miserable all the time. Among other things, including the Lord, my friends, my family, and my husband, buying a pair of cute Finches brought light and happiness to my life. I loved caring for them, they were very happy birds, and their happiness was contagious. They were part of my therapy. I am now the mother of a wonderful 12 years old boy. We don´t longer have any live birds because our condominium is very small, but you´ll find little birds figurines all around my house. One day, when we have a proper space for them, Finches will be part of this little family again.

Love birds of all kinds. Always have to put out bits of string and lint for them to make their nests in the spring. I have always been partial to hummingbirds because my mother always had conversations with them when I was small. She would whistle a tune and they would mock her back. I am a big birder and have been since I was a child. My parents instilled the love of watching and feeding birds. Picking just one species would be very hard to do from feeder birds, waterfowl, migrating warblers, birds of prey, owls, woodpeckers, and the birds that stay with us year round. I do have fondness for the birds that are near extinction and are on the comeback trail such as the Whopping Cranes. Such folks like Operation Migration are trying to establish an eastern migrating flock and to see these young birds flying behind an ultra light trike is a magnificent sight that instills the hope that the future generations will be able to see these beautiful birds. This is one of the many birds that make my heart soar.
Kay says
That’s a good question. I’ve actually never thought of that before. I see the Cardinals a lot on craft things and love the bright red but don’t know if I’ve ever seen one in real life. We’ve had parakeets before and I love those.

One time a number of years ago my husband and I were trying to make a very difficult decicions about an emotional job transition. We were at the crossroads of that decision while we were away at a retreat centre sitting outside on some adirondack chairs. We were talking and wrestling and praying and crying and knew this decision would take a huge leap of faith on our parts. Off chance I looked up into the rafters of the edge of the roofline we were sitting under. The whole time we had been wrestling there – a sparrow had been sitting there above us in such stillness. The song – “His Eye is on the Sparrow”, came flooding over us. At that moment, we felt confident we could make this decision and God would hold us firm.
Ever since then sparrows have a special place in my heart!

Recently I have a new love for owls, but when i was a child we had a large aviary filled with Australian finches and later we had some Australian parrots. There are also many sweet ducks where we live in South Australia, called wood ducks, because they roost in trees. They are very family oriented and sweet natured and have the cutest chicks. We saw cardinals and blue jays a year ago on our trip to the US and I thought they were just lovely. Told you I couldn’t pick just one favourite!

I have even learned to recognize their song: “chicka-dee-dee-dee”! I was thrilled to see that you chose them, too, in your new stamp set!

I have two: Bluebirds – they mate for life and share the tasks of raising their family together. My Daddy loved bluebirds and built a bluebird house for his and my mom’s yard. It remained unoccupied until shortly after his death, when a sweet bluebird couple moved into it. And cardinals – they remind me of my Grandpa, who loved them as well.
Cynthia Clark says
I love all birds but, the blue bird is my favorite!

My favorite bird is the black-capped chickadee. They are short and chubby (just like me) and have dark (hair) on the top of their heads (just like I used to before the gray) and they are a little bit shy (just like me, but my sisters won’t believe that I said that).

I do LOVE the BOLD and BRIGHT colors of parrots though, and held one when I was a girl, so I would pick them as my favorite! Plus it reminds me of home in the Caribbean…blue blue waters and hot white sands…I wish I was there now!
AllysonA says

My favorite bird is the Cardinal…I love it because it reminds me of my Grandparents…when I was little there was a bird feeder outside of their big picture window and the cardinals would come and eat and sit for long periods….Now I hardly ever see them, but when I do it warms my heart.
katevdp says
That’s easy! The kookaburra. Because his laugh woke me up every morning of my childhood. And as kids, we fed them every night on our back deck. They may not be pretty, but they are very cheeky birds, who like to laugh. So they are easy to love.

It depends on the season. In the spring it’s the robin, the thrill of seeing that first robin is exciting because spring is coming and days are getting warmer. In summer it’s the baltimore oriole or the gold finch. They both are such fun splashes of color at the feeder. The fall would be seeing the juncos return for the winter (that’s the not good part of the sighting) and winter would be the cardinal or blue jay, both beautiful color against a snowy background.

Mine is a toss-up between the Blue Jay (even though he is mean) and the Cardinal. My reason is because I grew up in Minnesota where I saw them often, and there’s just something wonderful about seeing either one perched on a snow-dusted branch. They are simply magnificent!

Kristyn Sinnott says
It would have to be the chickadee. It is such a simple bird. It lacks color and “beauty” but it is steady and faithful. When all other birds have left for the winter and have made their way to warmer temps, the chickadee stays and keeps singing. It sings no matter the weather, no matter the conditions. The chickadee teaches me to never give up, keep going, and don’t worry if others “look better” just keep being faithful.

I took that friendly bird for granted and now that I live in Colorado, I don’t see the sweet fellow that often. In the spring and summer I keep a bird bath filled so when he’s in town, he’ll stop by to clean himself up a bit and get a refreshing sip of water.
