Might not really qualify as a memory but for me my favorite thing about my father is, that he CHOSE to me my father. He married my mother after she had been widowed when my biological father had died – and a few years later my father chose to adopt me. I’ve always felt and known that while I might not be his in a biological sense, I am fully and completely his child. That to me is a strong choice and a gift in my life.

I have a lot of memories of my dad but my favorite is even as I was in my late teens early 20’s my dad still wanted me to give him a hug, a kiss and say goodnight to him; if I didn’t he would be very upset and would tell me about it the next day. It was nice to tell him that everynight and tell him I loved him. I wish I could do that again everynight.

Oh, there’s plenty. I remember my dad setting up the back of our conversion van for movie time, as well as carrying my two sisters and I (one at a time, on piggyback) into the house after we’d fallen asleep at the drive-in movies. I also remember his version of Sunday morning breakfast- fried eggs (with ketchup on the side) and spam. Yes, it was delicious and, no, I haven’t eaten spam since then. :p
Deb Else says
One of my favorite memories of my Dad is the small car he built out of spare lawn mower parts & left over wood for his grandkids. My heart swells every time I see them there together.

I have always admired the relationship my husband has with his father…solid, uncomplicated, true respect and admiration. I recall how touched I was when my father-in-law especially thanked me for “lending” him my husband so that he could escort his father back to Germany for a month-long “good bye” trip of all his family and friends, since he knew his health would prevent him from making that big trip again.

I lost my Dad a few years ago, miss him terribly! But….one of the things we like to joke about was his hatred of the smell of a cooking turkey (he was a vegetarian). My dad was always known for being frugal to a fault. When he passed away, we ordered a catered lunch for family and friends after his memorial service. When we went to pick up the food, someone had forgotten to pass on the order! They were very apologetic, and tolds us they would deliver the ood by the time we needed it. They lived up to their word and more by sending a much more lavish spread than we had ordered and there was NO charge! We all had a good chuckle that dad would be very pleased with all of this!

My mom has always been the strong one in our family, taking care of us three children and my dad, working full time and keeping house and cooking the most excellent German meals. However, my mom’s health has been failing for the past couple of years and my dad has had to pick up a lot of the household responsibilities. He’s come a long way from being the “cared for” to becoming the “care giver”. It’s heartwarming and bittersweet at the same time to watch him fumble through “cooking a meal” of reheated leftovers. He is strong for my mom and for us but there are times when he confides in me and tells me just how difficult it is. I have a new love for him that I never knew before. He’s my hero.

My brother and I had planned a golf outing for my Mom’s family reunion. She passed away unexpectedly in June, but we decided we should still go on with it. So, my Dad, brother, and my husband and I made a foursome and went out to practice since I didn’t have much experience. Unfortunately, I hit the ball much farther than my Dad, and that did not go over very well! It still brings a smile to my face thinking about him getting his feathers all ruffled!

My dad instantly said yes and it took at least 10 mins to find it for her. My sister and I were a bit annoyed at the delay but my dad was cheerful. My dad was a very traditional 50’s dad. He worked and my mom stayed home and took care of the kids and the house. And he very much thought that is the way it should be. But his attitude about women had an interesting dichotomy because as much as he expected our mom to be a traditional stay at home wife and mother – he expected the opposite from his daughters. He encouraged – no, insisted on – college and career. He talked often about how important it was for us to have the skills to be independent and be able to make choices in our lives.

This is easy…. My dad bough a camper — the only way he could afford taking 3 kids and his wife on a vacation (hotels were way out of his league) and took us to Land Between the Lakes for Thanksgiving. We ended up camping (for the first time) near a church group retreat and that group just took us in and we made crafts and sang and just had a wonderful time. I am the ninth, and last, child born in my family. My Mom was 45 and Dad 48. Most of my friends thought they were my grandparents! At first, it bothered me. But they were the best parents a child could pray for. My dad kept me busy with crayons and coloring books for hours to keep me out of mom’s space for a bit. He is most definitely who gave me my artistic eye for color, shading, dimension and light. My all-time favorite gift from my grandkids today? A new box of 64! Thanks Dad, I miss you every day.
Terri Bills says

I have a lot of very fond memories involving my Dad. He really shaped me into the person I am today. Particular memories involve him driving us all to see my Grandmother on the weekends, him taking me into work with him and then later out into the City for shopping, a meal and the cinema, playing board games and just general playful banter. Thanks for the chance to relive some of those memories by recounting them. 🙂

I was at the movies with my dad when I was about 8 or so. I had a piece of gum that I no longer wanted, so he told me to stick it behind my ear (kinda like Violet Beauregarde). It got so stuck in my hair that we had to cut it out- at the time I was horrified, but now that I’m a parent myself, it makes me laugh at my naïveté.

My Dad had to have his right leg amputated above the knee 5 years ago, at the time, my older daughter was 4. My Dad was so worried that she would be afraid of him. When we went to visit him in the hospital, DD asked to see his leg. He wasn’t sure, but did, and DD said “whew! That doesn’t look bad at all – in my mind, I throwed up.” Well, my Dad, and everyone laughed so hard and loud, this tension that ha even mounting for days had just been completely broken, and all worries were over. He was so relieved :).

My father was a man who laughed. I remember a family hike when I was very young. There was a small creek to cross. My dad found a big log and struggled with it to get it over the creek. He finally got it there, let it fall to make a bridge…but when it hit the other side, it shattered and fell into the creek. He sat down and laughed until he cried. I hope my children have also learned to laugh through my example. Thanks Dad!

One of my favorite memories of my Dad is how he would wake me up in the mornings when I was young. He would come into my room singing some song, and mixing up the words with one’s he made up. My dad worked very hard. He had two jobs and wasn’t home very much. However, he made sure he was home for dinner each evening and we all sat down together to eat. On weekends, he would take us with him where ever he went. My very favorite memory was going to Father/Daughter Campouts with him (Girl Scouts). We always felt that we were special because he and his friends made us feel that way. During one particular campout, I fell on a rock road and skinned both hands, arms and legs. He took care of cleaning all the rocks out and carefully bandaged me. That night was square dancing night and he carefully danced with me.

My dad passed away seven years ago. I miss him every day and feel so blessed that I have so many wonderful memories to cherish. He was “a character.” He paved his own way in the world and taught me how to do the same. There was never a moment that I doubted his love for me. As I sit here thinking about all the moments with him, I’m smiling and crying. I can’t pick one moment because it wouldn’t capture everything about who he was and how he made me feel. It’s amazing that those “little” moments become the ones we treasure the most.

My Father used to drive us to school occasionally when we needed to get to school fast. Well, he always drove in the right hand lane down a Belmont Ave from Harlem to Pulaski. That was always an adventure. But we made it there in record time.

My favorite memory of my dad was when he came home from WWII. I was three years old at the time and one year old when he left. So I really had no memory of him except what my mom had told me. Mom had told me he was coming home and we just couldn’t wait. I was so excited when there was a knock on the door and just had to get there first. When I opened the door, there stood this man I had never seen before. (anyway in my memory) I just ran away crying. But the image of him standing there, in his uniform, has always remained in my memory.

Too many to list so I will have to go with him reading to us kids – whether it was the Bible or a piece of classic literature. This regular ritual eventually turned into an interactive endeavor, with us kids looking up words and allusions to explain to the group. Not only did this process provide the foundation of my faith, my dad also inspired my deep and abiding love of great and beautiful literature. For this and so much more, Daddy, I thank you!

My father just died a couple of months ago, so this question is very poignant for me. I can honestly say he was a best friend for 60 years. We talked about everything that happened in life, and hung out together taking pictures (his were spectacularly beautiful – especially flowers). We were close enough that it felt like we had left no stones unturned when he died at 92. At the moment, my strongest memory was his using his last bit of movement and cognition (he died with a slowly developing stroke), to hug my hand on his shoulder between his head and shoulder. He was famous wide and far for his warm bear hugs. Lucky me.
Jennie Cottrell says
Just thinking of Dad brings a smile to my face! When I was just 5 years old and was in the hospital getting my tonsils removed, my grandma’s friend had come to visit. My Dad felt like she wasn’t doing me much good, so he calmly and firmly picked her up and relocated her outside of the room. He’s always been my great protector. Love that guy!

Each Christmas I would come home and while my Mom was at work I would start making Christmas cookies. Dad would join me in the kitchen. My favourite memory of my father is my first independent memory as distinct from the “memories” we have because our family speaks about events in our early years and they become ours. I was 18 months to two years old and my father was riding his bicycle across the wooden bridge over the river in our small town. It was night-time and I was sitting on the crossbar and recall seeing the moonlight glittering the current of the river through the gaps in the planking of the bridge and feeling safely held under my dad’s cycling cape and smelling his characteristic smell of sawn wood and Virginia tobacco. After sixty years, this still speaks to me of the way that our father encouraged my brother and me out into the world .

I’m much like one of your very first commentors – it is that my Daddy chose for me to be his child. He married my mom after she and my biological father divorced. I was almost three. For a short while, I remember visiting with my biological father – but then the visits stopped and my Daddy adopted me. I never, ever felt like I wasn’t HIS child. He loved me just as much as he did my sister and brother.

One of my favorites is from the slumber party I had when I was 13. He had all my friends out in the front yard in the middle of the night beating the azalea bushes for a snipe hunt. They were into it, too. My dad is a very convincing story teller and I don’t think one of those girls doubted him. It was quite a sight!

Miss my dad every day. I was blessed with a wonderful man for my dad. The biggest thing that makes him my hero is how he always saw the good in people–even those who didn’t have much good to find. He always respected my grandmother even when they didn’t agree. He was a true gentleman. I love him for showing me what a husband should be like. My father wasn’t much on saying I love you but we alway knew because he showed his love in so many ways. I was the only one to attend and graduate from high school and college, and he was always the one to provide the encouragement to keep going and never give up, no matter how big or small my dreams may be. We used to go camping a lot, and he and I would stay up late in the night fishing under the stars. Those were my favorite moments.

One of the strongest memories of my father the times we had together when he was my track coach. We practiced together and he attended every track meet together and was my biggest fan and cheerleader, and I enjoyed succeeding in record breaking throws and making it to Provincials 🙂

My dad died when I was 11. I have 3 brothers and I was the only girl. Usually my mom took care of buying birthday presents, but one year for my birthday he went out and bought me “Tinker Bell” body powder.” I remember being so touched that he took time out from his busy schedule to do that for me. Forty years later, I still have that powder, just as a keepsake to remind me of him.

My dad used to take us camping for a week every summer. I’ll never forget the time that giant raccoons somehow picked the locks on our coolers and “stole” our food for the whole week! My dad’s reaction to finding the empty coolers is the still laughed about in our family today! 🙂
Amie Hamman says
Since my dad wasn’t around much as I grew older, my father figure was my uncle. Unfortunately, we lost him when I was in high school. But I cherish every memory with him. My favorite memory is of my Grandpa teaching me how to polka. We used to visit my grandparents every other weekend and on Sundays after church there was this radio station that played polka music (my grandpa’s parents came over from Germany) and we would listen to it ALL morning and dance around the living room!
Love all the projects and products this month. You guys are so amazing! 🙂

When my sister and I were little, my dad would dress up in an old tacky suit and tie and we got to push him in the pool as soon as the weather was warm enough for swimming. I could not possibly think of a single favorite memory of my dad! But, something that I always enjoyed was watching sports with him. He taught me about all the games and took me to many as well. Hmmm ~ if I had to pick one single memory ~ it would be the day he took me to see the Packers play ~ when they still played at Milwaukee County Stadium. With three siblings, we didn’t have much one-on-one time together. I have to say that knowing he has always been there for me when I needed anything is the biggest comfort. (How would I have ever known to wiggle that wire when my car wouldn’t start?) One other “crazy” memory that my siblings all laugh at would be when both talked about “war” stories from our jobs (me being a nurse and my Dad working in law enforcement his entire career.

While it’s not a favorite memory, it’s definitely strong-when the Gulf War broke out, being a young teenager, I panicked when it was announced that things had turned for the worse overseas. My parents were volunteering at a group that showed support for the troops and the war by sending supplies there. My father was on the phone with me (I happened to be alone at our house) and was calming me down, telling me we’d be ok. He really helped me by being calm, not treating me like a child and just listening.
Janet B. from WV says
My dad was a self-employed mechanic when I was growing up & I was home-schooled. Some of my favorite memories involve me lugging all my school books to go to work with him in his truck (he had all his toolboxes on the back). My dad is a very religious man and I always looked forward to going to church with him on Sundays. I’ve been my dad’s buddy for as long as I remember. My favorite memories are when we would walk together in the morning. Most days we’d leave the house at 6:00, walk, stop and play at the park, and then come home and play the game “Sorry”. We laughed, talked about a lot of things (as we sometimes went even through my high school years), and just loved being together. He truly is my hero.

My favorite memories of my dad are his singing “happy birthday” to me over the phone – every year we were apart. My favorite memories of my dad are when he became a grandpa. While he wasn’t very affectionate with us growing up, he loved his grandkids with all of his heart. He’d walk hand in hand with his small grandsons; he’d play dolls with his granddaughters. He died 5 months after my second daughter was born and I have the most precious memory of a day spent at the park with my dad, my 3 year old, and my infant daughter. He carried the little one around while the older one played on the slides.

a favourite memory is when the school I worked at about 15 years ago did a Western Theme. My father is deceased, but I have many wonderful memories of the family trips we took every summer to “discover America”….always an educational endeavor. No Hollywood stars’ homes…Mt. Palomar for us. I have too many good memories of my Grandpa for there to be a favorite. He was a good man. I loved staying with Gran and Grandpa. The routine they had. In the evening just before bed Grandpa would set the table for breakfast. I loved the buzz of his shaver in the morning where he would shave in the kitchen as there was no power point in the bathroom. How he would stir us kids up and was immensely proud of ‘The World’s Biggest Stirrer’ spoon that hung on the kitchen wall. How I felt loved, not a memory, but a feeling.

How can a single favorite memory be chosen?! There are so many!! His not-so-successful attempts at cooking … riding in the little trailer behind the lawn tractor with my young son sitting between his legs … yodeling through the house … sleepy Sunday afternoons in the squeaky rocking chair. He died of cancer in 1986 at the age of 49. A great man, greatly missed.

I was the only one out of 4 kids that loved the horses to this day I still have horses not race horses but registered quarter horses just like him. I remember him reading devotions to us at the dinner table or him telling us funny stories from his day. He made sure we always felt special and loved. I think my strongest memory of my DADDY, he wasn’t a Dad, he was a DADDY, was what a hard worker he was and how much he loved his family. He died 12 years ago and I still miss him so much.

As a very young man, my father was severely injured while in the Navy. He lost one leg below the knee and had the other fused at the knee.He NEVER let this stop him from enjoying life or doing the activities with his four kids that any loving father enjoyed. I still picture him removing his prosthetic leg on the dock at the lake house and diving in to join us in the water.

Besides the wonderful lessons my dad taught me about working hard and being responsible, my favorite memory of him was playing tennis together. I never had an interest in tennis, but when I was in middle school all my friends were taking ski lessons in the winter. I really wanted to too, so I begged my parents. My dad finally caved and said, “Yes,” only if I learned how to play tennis so we could play together. I not very enthusiastically said,”Yes.” It turned out I loved tennis and had a lot of fun playing (and sometimes beating!) him. It’s a sport I still love to play every once ina while.

I was a tom boy growing up so I tended to want to hang with my dad. We would go fishing, or go to the movies. My favorite was the Star Wars Trilogy. My family (all 4 of us) would go the movies and my mom and sister would go in one direction (to a girlie movie) and my dad and I would head off to see what Luke Skywalker would do next! We still walk together every Saturday morning. As we walk around the track we talk and catch up on the week (he says after we catch up we solve the world’s problems haha) I love my dad!!

It’s very difficult to come up with only one favorite memory of my Dad because it was such a big influence in my life. However, my fondest memories are the winters my parents would come to Washington from Minnesota to visit. They started out with a one-week visit and each winter they’d stay longer, up to 3 months every year, until his death. He was the type who didn’t want to travel but loved coming to our house and escaping the harsh MN winters. We created all kinds of memories together but one that stands out is playing Pictionary. The word was “disco” as I thought to myself I doubt he’d even know what that was and as I was attempting to draw something, his partner yelled out the word. I was in awe. Come to find out, he just wrote the word on the paper. We laughed until we cried.

Always sad to go home but we knew Dad would do it again next week.

I was a frog in a well, person who is ignorant of the real world until then. He is the one who gave me an opportunity to take a broad view of things, and I came here in the USA to study more.

It’s an OVER-ALL thing for me; the THOUGHTFULLNESS, the LOVE, the SACRIFICING for our kids, the BEING THERE, the BEING A GOOD EXAMPLE, the PROTECTOR, the TIME spent with our kids! I could go on & on! I am TRUELY BLESSED! 🙂

I didn’t grow up with a dad, but I have a heckuva one now!
I met my in-laws 13 months after I married their son (met & married overseas). After really only knowing them 6 months, we delivered our only kiddo and the first grandchild. When they brought us back to the room, everyone swarmed our daughter, except my father-in-law. He stood beside me what seemed like forever, holding and stroking the back of my hand, told me he loved me, and kept asking if I needed anything. We’ve been like peas and carrots ever since!:)

I have so many different memories of my dad from each of the stages of my life that it is difficult to choose. One that comes to mind shows how my dad is there for me even where he isn’t physically present. Many years back, there was a terrible ice storm causing bumper-to-bumper traffic and many accidents. I’d been in the car for close to eight hours when I was approaching my exit. Along the side of the highway were several cars that had slid there as the drivers were trying to exit. With hands clutching the wheel, I distinctly heard my dad coaching me, “Take your foot of the gas. Don’t break, Nancy. Now just ease your way past those cars.” I made it off the highway, home and to my phone to call my dad and tell him thank you.

I’ll never forget helping my Dad rebuild the engine in a truck we called Fred on one of the few days it snowed in Memphis. It was really cold and we both complained but we finished in time for Dad to get to work and we still reminisce about being a good team. It’s thing like that, that mold us most, I think.

My grandfather filled the “Dad” role in my life and raised me along side my grandmother. He was always so *present* when he spent time with me and made me feel special. Grandpa was a story teller. He loved to share information with my brother and I and would tell wonderful stories to share his knowledge with us, making it interesting. Grandpa has been gone seven years now. He always had a big, bright smile and his smile will always be what I remember and cherish most about him.

My parents divorced when I was very little, so I didn’t see my dad very often. We lived in different states, so we saw him for a few weeks in the summer and that was usually it. My favorite memory of him is of him reading to my sister and I as we fell asleep. My dad was a very talented artist and a published author and he would read chapters from his books as he completed them. He was writing a book that can be described as being similar to The Hobbit and the main characters in the story were all based on my siblings and I. “My” character was a fairy. I remember feeling so special and so comforted by the sound of his voice as he read that story to us as we fell asleep. We lost my dad a few years ago and he never finished that book, but I still cherish those memories.
Andrea says
My Dsd used to take my sister and I out every Sun afternoon to the many sites to see in NY. He would be giving my Mom a break and spending quality time with us. Thanks to him I have seen so many fantastic museums, Broadway shows and tourist attractions. These are memories that we will never forget and he actually remembers as his memory wanes with Dementia.

My memory of him is not what he did, but what he didn’t do… He never yelled at me , or raised his voice in anger. I knew there were times when he was frustrated with me or disappointed with the choices I had made but never once did he make me feel unloved. That’s a beautiful gift to give any child

One favorite memory of my dear father was a time he came to visit me at college and brought me a bicycle because he thought it would be nice to have. His visits at school were always such a special time – going to the football game in freezing weather (-5 degrees!) and staying to the bitter end, showing up just before Easter with a giant Easter basket, coming and taking me and my friends out for a wonderful dinner just when we thought we couldn’t take another meal in the dining room, and on and on. . .
Cherie says
His strong work ethic and sense of humor. We miss him.

My Dad is such an important part of my life. He always had time for me as a child and made me feel special. There are so many wonderful memories but one of my favourite was going camping with my Dad. He always had such wonderful stories to tell. I feel I learnt more around my dinner table as a child due to all his stories than almost anywhere else. I haven’t seen my Dad for over 5 years now and I miss him so much. We just live so far apart it’s hard to get together.

I lost my father when I was 17…..he was only 35…..he died of a brain tumor. I was by far a “daddy’s girl” and I often wonder how my life would have been different if he were still with me. I have many memories growing up and while the time after he was diagnosed with a brain tumor was not my favorite memory, I do fondly remember taking him daily to radiation & chemotherapy and helping care for him. We were already close but during this time we had some special times. I never thought I would lose him I always thought he would beat it…I was brought up believing you didn’t die til you got old….hard lesson to learn so young in life. But I loved my father & I treasure the time I had with him:). I would love if he were still here he would definitely be overwhelmed with cards from me!!!!

Kristi Lewis says
I have so many memories of my father. To narrow it down is so difficult. My dad has always been such a strong influence in my life. I think one of my many memories is that he would get home from work (after landscaping all day in the heat)and still have the energy to play anything we wanted. Ofcourse it was usually building a fort, climbing trees, playing hide and go seek or having a tea party. And he would do it without complaining. He has taught me alot in how to be a good mom to my boys-putting myself aside and just being in the moment. They are only little for a blink of an eye. Love my dad

My favorite memory of my dad is that he never got angry with us when we did something ‘bad’ like get a ticket or get into a fender-bender. Mom always knew it was something like that when we called home and asked for dad. He would say – forget about the car, it can be fixed….are you ok? Or – I guess you learned your lesson, now let’s move on.
Sheena B says

I always earned baseball tickets for good grades– 2 tickets to 2 games– and (because my parents were divorced) my dad would come to take me to the games. We would go for sub sandwiches before the game, and he taught me how to keep score in the program. I still love going to baseball games.

My favorite memory is also my first memory I can remember. Going sledding in the snow when I was very little. My father was a very busy man and worked three jobs to support the family when I was growing up so we didn’t see much of him. But when I was very little and the only kid in the house we went sledding in the snow. I guess it sticks in my memory because I grew up in southern California and we didn’t see snow much. I guess we must have gone to the mountains after a good snowfall! Thank you for the chance to win!

My dad was my everything! He passed away 7 yrs ago, and I still miss him like the first day. He didn’t said in words how much he loved us, but he did with his actions… He was always there for my mom and for his children, because we were his biggest treasure. I admired him because he was able to overcome his weaknesses and became a great man for all of us.

I have so many cherished memories of my father that it would be difficult to pick just one. He always kept his childhood innocence and heart. He delighted in Christmas lights. Every time we dyed Easter eggs, he thought the purple was beautiful, as if he’d never seen it before. He often played board games with us. He watched MTV with us. Prince was one of his favorites. We lost Dad to prostate cancer in 1997. Not a day goes by that I don’t think of him and/or miss him. Now I’m crying…
MaryB says
My dad passed away a year and a half ago. When I was little, he would make up stories to tell me at bedtime. My favorites were a long-running “series” of stories about three grasshoppers named, Hoppy, Skippy and Jumpy. Sometimes I’d even tell him what situations I wanted the grasshoppers to be in, and he’d have to make up a story as he went. He was a good storyteller!
BeccyH says
When I was a senior in high school and had a half day, my dad would pick me up from school and take me to lunch. Jana says
My dad … the most sweet, caring, sincere, loving, brillant, well respected man I have ever known. I have many memories growing up, but the memory that sticks with me today is my Dad as a Grandpa. My children are lucky to have known him. Although we lost Dad at age 60 to cancer, the world is a much better place because of him. The day he passed, all of the hospital windows were literally covered with ladybugs … so today when I’m working in my garden and a ladybug finds me … I know Dad is with me 🙂
Alanna says

My favorite memory of my dad is when I was 13 years old. My (younger) sister has just received flowers from a boy and I (a very awkward middle schooler) was devastated. My dad held me while I cried and then sat me down. He told me about how he had struggled with self esteem issues as the younger brother of a popular older brother. That he would take the time to really share with me and sympathize, rather than write me off as an emotional teenage girl made a lasting impression on me.
Margaret C says
My dh’s father and grandfather have always been very supportive to me – even in the early days when they probably didn’t think I was the best match for their wonderful son/grandson! I am so blessed to have such strong, loving, amazing men in my life – and do is my daughter!
Mendi Yoshikawa says
I was trying to think up a good story to make up, but as I sat reading everyone’s comments I knew I couldn’t do that. I felt a bit envious of what they wrote. Unfortunately I only really had a step dad growing up and I can’t think of one happy memory of him, but now that I am nearly 40 years old my Mom is re-marrying a wonderful man who is the closest thing I’ve ever had to a real father and I couldn’t be happier. He makes me laugh and will bend over backward to help us. 🙂

When I was 13 years old, I really wanted a pair of ripped up, holey, acid-washed jeans. My dad could not understand why I would want to pay for jeans with holes in them! But he got them for me anyways. One of the many memories that I look back on fondly.

I have had so many great times with my dad. I think some of our best times were going up to the mountains every summer. My dad worked a lot during the year and this was the perfect opportunity for the family to get away from everything. We would always go on great hikes. Most of the time we would start off on the path and would hardly ever come back the way we came. It was always an adventure on which path we would take to get home. 🙂

To think I almost lost my father 1 1/2 years ago. I’m glad to be given another chance to make more memories and to have the chance to show my appreciation and gratitude for all the years of upbringing. As a child, we were very sheltered by my father who’ll always be available for us 24/7 even till this day. There isn’t 1 occasion where we children would request for something and not have it. Of course as we grew older, we are no longer dependent on him but he will always still ask if we have any needs and he will try to provide. That is how blessed we all are. This coming Father’s Day will be the 1st since being away for the last few years. Definitely an occasion for celebrating and documenting.

I’m a Daddy’s girl through and through, and have so many great memories that it’s hard to choose just one! Even though I’m married now, he’s often still the first guy I call when I need help–even though he lives in another state! About a year ago, I came home and heard a mysterious rustling in the kitchen–I called Daddy immediately and he got quite the kick out of hearing me discover that that there was a possum in my house! 🙂 We still laugh over that story.
Love this Monty’s release–as usual! I’d love to have it all! 🙂 Thanks for the incredible inspiration!

The year–1949–I had saved my allowence for new shoes & my Dad took me to the store. The shoes I liked cost more than I had saved, so I looked at other shoes. He’s been gone now 29 years but every time I have ice cream I still remember how we would have ice cream at 1:30 in the morning just him and me.

One of my favorite memories of my dad is from when I turned 9 yrs old. Usually my mother would go with us whenever we were purchasing clothes but this time he said I could pick everything on my own. I was soooo excited. I picked out 3 tops, 2 pants and 1 skirt. When we got home, my mother was livid! She said that nothing I purchased matched.. and she wanted to take it all back the next day. I cried and cried to my father and he put his foot down – he said his baby girl could keep watch she picked out. 🙂 However, my mother was right – nothing matched and when I put the clothes on at home, I didnt like any of it – but I was too stubborn to say anything. My father must have known because a few days later he came home with more clothes, all of which matched the items I picked out – so then I had 6 matching outfits! I was so happy!

Not in the materialistic sense, but because of all the things we were exposed to and learned in the different places we traveled too. And that was why my dad always wanted to take us to different places. As an adult with my own children; we haven’t been able to travel. So I appreciate those trips dad took us on & what we learned even more now.

My favourite memory is sort of a compilation of memories; every summer, I would spend two weeks with my Grandfather, at his cottage, until I was about 17. ( That was the last summer, as I moved even further away, and he sold the cottage.) There were so many hours spent just listening to all of his stories, and the older I got, the more in-depth conversations we’d have. Many hours spent exploring the surrounding waterways in his little boat, but never fishing, because he didn’t believe in traumatizing an animal for the sake of a story (we don’t eat fish). He was the sweetest, kindest man you would ever know. Now, 10 years later, he’s in a nursing home (where he’s a favourite of the nurses), and I send him cards all the time…even if he doesn’t know who they are from.
Tracey says
My dad is now deceased but I remember when I was little how good my dad smelled and how handsome he looked when he got dressed-up.
He had to have the best clothes and especially shoes. To this day, when I see a man dressed-up, the first thing I check out is his shoes. If they are really nice, I say oh that’s something my daddy would wear. It may be odd but that’s what reminds me of my daddy.

Oh so hard to narrow it down to one favorite memory of my dad, but one has to be the fact that he has always taken time off from work to be an election judge in the community. He believes so strongly in the process of voting for the candidates and issues we care about and that belief rubbed off his children. I could go on and on, but this is something I think is pretty unique about him.

One of my favorite memories of my dad was when I was 22 years old and accidentally backed my car out of the garage into his pick-up truck. My mom started yelling at me and insisted I go to my dad’s workplace and tell him what happened. I was so nervous, but I did it and instead of being upset he just laughed and told me it was okay. He only made me pay for half the repairs, which I thought was very generous, and I’ve never forgotten how gracious he was. It really showed me that I was more important to him than “things”.

I lost my dad to heart disease when I was only 27, but I remember when we were growing up that my dad was quite a teaser. I remember one time him scaring my younger sister while we were on ab old timey train where they were doing an “Indian attack” on the train. He reached around the side of the seat where my sister was sitting in front of him and poked her in the ribs. She nearly went through the roof of the train car.
I miss him, but he is with the Lord so I’ll see him again!

My fav memory is of my father who is 91 this Friday. I remember one day he came home with a doll cradle he made for me at work. He was a carpenter and worked at the Biltmore Hotel in Dayton, Ohio. He was having a slow day at work and decided to make this for me. I cannot tell you how thrilled I was with it. Now being the tomboy I was, I promptly made a bed out of tissues and fabric and promptly added my “dolls” to the bed…..WORMS!! Oh yes…worms. Gross me out with a spoon but that’s what I liked playing with. LOL

my fondest memory with my dad is when I was driving his 1990 Lincoln Town Car and he took me to the busiest downtown area and told me to parallel park. I was a mess, I did the worst, but he was patient and didn’t give up on me. He encouraged me and was firm in not helping me. I finally did it after honks and sweaty armpits. After my accomplishment he replied with, “if you can park a town car, you will be able to parallel park any car!” Very true! Thanks Dad!

My Dad could whistle like no one I have ever heard! I don’t mean like bird calls I mean like to music! He’d whistle his way through old 40’s tunes and close his eyes and just have fun!
One day recently while checking my mail, I heard someone whistling and I just smiled so wide because it reminded me of my Dad who has been gone for 22 years now. I thanked the man whistling for bringing back good memories!
Lynn Hardy says
I have so many precious memories of my Dad and I miss him all the time. He would always help me with my homework by checking my spellings and he loved doing crosswords. I remember how happy and proud he was when he held my daughter on the day she was born. But I think my most vivid memory of him was a few days before he died. We had gone to visit my parents and Dad had been asleep in his chair for most of the time. When he awoke my daughter (then in her early teens) started playing a game with him to see how many uses she could find for two chair seat cusions that she had picked up. She mimed having wings, fish fins, exotic hats etc with them, and as she got more and more inventive my Dad was laughing so much that he nearly fell out of his chair! That was the last time we ever saw him alive, but I was so glad that we can remember such a happy family time together.
Thank you for the chance to win, but I feel that I am a winner already as you have reminded me of my dear old Dad and put a smile on my face!

It’s hard to pick just one special memory of my dad…how he protected us from the rampaging moose coming towards us as he tried to get that perfect picture…how he worked many long hours but ALWAYS made the time he did have be quality time…how he isn’t a party guy but shone telling incredible story after story at his 70th surprise party…how he continues to “father” my son (now 21 and in college) after his father left us…and how he strives to be the man of God that our Father in Heaven is creating him to be!

Two things are very positive memories for me … first that my Dad was there for me at every netball game from age 7 10 17 (thats every Saturday thru winter) and secondly, no matter who was in the wrong if we had a fight he would always come in and apologise and sort it out before I went to sleep. That was a big deal to me – I always knew he would so it would all be ok before the day was over.
Jennifer Ferrell says
I love this time of year because new and fabulous things are sold for Father’s Day! I love all the masculine sets! One of my best memories of my father is a bit odd. I remember being yelled at by my dad, to the point I was in tears. Of course this was when I was a teenager and knew everything. Lol I was definately old enough to know better, to know right from wrong. I don’t remember what I had done, but I do remember how my dad made me feel after the yelling was done. He hugged me and told me that he loved me. He told me that I knew better and that he wanted to always protect me, but it was time for me to start making better decisions. Despite the butt chewing, I knew he was right and he made me really feel loved. I think I mainly cried because I knew he was right. As a mother of a young child I really understand. I can teach my son right from wrong and lead the way. But there will come a time I will also have to let him become his own man.
Christina Smith says
My dad wasn’t home much when I was younger due to his job in the military, so he missed birthdays and holidays. So my favorite memory of my dad is when he came back from being deployed overseas. It’s funny, I don’t recall my dad being particulary affectionate, but if we were out at a ball game late, we’d fall asleep on the drive home and I always remember feeling him carry me from the car to the bed with a tenderness that wasn’t there when my eyes were open. Now, we do that for our kids. 🙂

How can I choose just one out of so many? My Dad has a wonderful sense of humor and always loved playing practical jokes on anyone and everyone. One Christmas at Mom and Dad’s, there was a huge package for my husband (Dad had drawn his name that year and had wrapped the gift in a refrigerator box). Dad could hardly contain his laughter as my husband started unwrapping it. My husband was 6’3″ and since the box was almost as tall as he was, he decided he could tackle it better by laying the package on its side. Finally managing to get the box open, he crawled inside, throwing paper left and right. My Dad was doubled over with laughter by this time, hardly able to catch his breath. Finally, my husband backed out of the box… holding a pair of gloves. Tears of laughter were running down my Dad’s cheeks, while hubby gave him a few choice words. Both could give as good as they got. A favorite memory of my two favorite guys!

He was the best dad a girl could have and ALWAYS had time for his kids/grandkids and would never turn down an opportunity to spend time with his kids or grandkids. My fondest memory/ies I have of my dad is the week before he died. He had cancer and knew he wasn’t going to be with us much longer and shared some tender and special feelings, poems and told me of memories of his childhood that were precious to him. All were personal and too tender and private to share here but it was a week of tenderness shared with a Dad and his only daughter.

I was an only child and a girl but my dad was never disappointed by not having a boy. We rode horses together, went shopping together (always coming home with something, a new pair of boots, a Hop-A-Long Cassidy bike with training wheels). You would have thought we had a lot of money but we didn’t. My dad worked in the oil field and one time when it was bad weather and he didn’t have to work, my daddy, my mother and myself did a conga dance singing,”I don’t have to work” I learned later all we had money wise was 4 pennies on the refrigerator. But we had family time.

When I was in high school, I got my only “D” grade in algebra. I was devastated and scared to death to tell my dad. My favourite memory I think is when my Dad took me off to university – and listened to the same song over and over and over in the car, because it reminded him of my Mom and he missed her even in that short time.

My dad passed away just over a year ago, and I still miss him so much. I have so many wonderful memories of him, but one of my favourites is when I was around five and learning to read books. I still remember his patience with me, and his pride when I read an entire Winnie the Pooh book by myself–except for the word ‘Eeyore’. I had to ask him what that word was. 😀

I actually have to narrow it down to two great memories. My Dad used to wake everyone up for church on Sundays and then put on some great music for us to get ready to, while he prepared breakfast for us. The other is when he used to pick me up early from school on opening day for the Dodgers and we would go to the game and have a great afternoon. So much fun and great memories.

Last November, my family was in a car accident where a young girl hit us from behind smashing our back and causing us to smash the car in front of us too. While my entire family (my parents, my older brother and his fiance, my younger brother, and my husband were all kind of in shock and a bit angry at the girl who was clearly not paying attention, my dad was the one who kept saying, “It’s okay; it could have been worse. God protected us.” Normally, he’s the one who would’ve gotten angry, but I very distinctly remember just how calm he remained and just how appreciative he was that our injuries were minor. He continued to just be the strong head of the family as we we were in the hospital, and I know I will remember his attitude for the rest of my life.

My parents divorced when I was 4, and I didn’t get to spend much time with my dad, getting to see him only twice a year. I remember my freshman year of college, my dad came to visit me. I was out with my boyfriend when my dad called his house to tell me he had arrived in town, and one of my BF’s roommates callously told him that we were out buying beer. Gasp! Oh, the horror! I remember being so afraid to meet up with my dad after knowing what he’d been told. I figured a lecture of the century was waiting for me! When my BF and I finally drummed up the courage to go meet with my dad, his first words were, “So, what kind of beer do you like?”. We ended up having a great night hanging with my dad and we’ve had a closer relationship ever since.

My favorite memory of my Dad was when I was a child, each year – every august- he would take us to the State Fair. It was a tradition filled with fun times and great memories. To this day, I still take my children to the same fair – every year – even though we live 12 hours away. I would not have it any other way. My Dad was my rock and I miss him more than anything. Thank you for giving me a chance to remember a fun memory of my wonderful, dearly missed father.

It’s so hard to pick just one memory of my dad. All my life my dad has worked with his hands. He has been in construction for all of my 47 years and when he wasn’t building something for work, he was busy building or remodeling the homes we lived in. For fun he would race stock cars on the weekends and he did all of the work on the motor himself, along with some buddies of course, lol. He also did all of the repairs on the family cars. We never took our cars in and we never called anyone for any repairs in our home. He finally hung up his tool belt (for work purposes) sold his work truck, large tools, etc when he was 71 years old!!! He gave up building homes & decided to sell his business about 15 years prior. For the remaining years he sub contracted for a few companies. He didn’t slow down at all, he just gave the headache of owning a company. Heck, he was running up and down ladders at age 67 and outlasting guys half his age. If you can’t tell, I’m incredibly proud of him. He has the most amazing work ethic and is the hardest working man I’ve ever known. He’s going to be 76 this year but if he’s anything like his dad, we will have him till he’s 93!! I’ll tell you though, his hands tell a 1,000 stories. I can remember when I was probably only 8 or 9 years old and it was one of the times that us kids actually got to go out to eat at a Super Club (geez, don’t think they even use that term any more, lol) with them. While we waited I would sit on my dad’s lap at the bar. He would give me one of his cherries before he would put it in his drink and we wouldn’t tell my sisters. I would sit there as long as he would let me. While all the grown ups would talk I would sit there and study his hands. All the nicks, cuts, and the occasional black under his nail bed from hitting his finger with a hammer. The tan skin, all dry from being outside all the time and the bit of gray hair on the back of his hand. I swear I remember every line and mark on his hands. They made me feel secure. He made me feel secure. I sure do love my dad! Guess I don’t say it enough to him, so thank you for the question. I think I have a call to make!!

I have many wonderful memories with my dad. When I was a teen he used to take me with him sometimes on day-long road trips – this was through the jungles of Papua New Guinea, bringing supplies to missionary families. Those trips involved watching for nails in the road and driving through water up to our bumper, and lots of good conversations.
