Lizzie Jones has captured the true essence of Jackson Pollock’s drips and splatters with her tutorial today! He has some of the most recognizable paintings in the art world and brought a whole new perspective when he entered the scene. I loved this short little biography about him, especially getting to see his body movements and the energy he put into his drips and splatters.
Lizzie says, “Inspired by the work of Jackson Pollock, we will be exploring how we can create lively, dynamic patterns on our projects. In addition, we’ll learn how we can use these patterns to draw the eye toward a focal point or sentiment. We will be using a variety of paint brushes and other everyday craft supplies help us to drip, drizzle, and splatter in the characteristic style of the artist. These techniques are ideal for watercolors, reinkers, and even diluted acrylic paint.”
SUPPLIES:
- STAMPS: Happy For You, Background Basics: Super Stripes – Papertrey Ink
- DIES: Keep It Simple Frames die collection
- INK: True Black, Hawaiian Shores – Papertrey Ink
- PAPER: Smokey Shadow, Hawaiian Shores, Watercolor Paper (Strathmore)
- OTHER: Watercolor Paints (Gansai Tambi), Foam Tape (Scotch), Sewing Machine, Assorted Paint Brushes, Yarn
MEASUREMENTS & CUTTING LIST:
- Card Base: 4 1/4” x 11”, scored at 5 1/2”
- Painted Panel: 4” x 5 1/4”
- Banners: trimmed to about 3 3/8”
LIZZIE’S MASTER TIPS:
- Allow the ink or paint layers to dry before adding a new color. This allows the colors to remain nice and crisp. The sun does a great job of drying quickly without warping your paper.
- Cut your watercolor paper to be larger than you need so you have room to trim off areas you don’t want on your final project. This also allows you to tape down your paper’s edges to minimize warping.
- Have a variety of brushes and craft objects on hand for experimenting. Different brushes will give different effects.
- The more paint or ink you have in your brush, the larger the splatters are likely to be.
- You may want to wear latex gloves if you’re worried about staining your fingers.
- Make sure to cover everything carefully! Those little speckles have a knack for getting everywhere. Don’t forget to cover yourself, too. Wear a paint shirt or smock to protect clothing.
–Now it’s your turn! Use drips and splatters to create your own background for a project. You can choose to re-create the exact project from Lizzie above or design your own using the same concepts. Your project must also incorporate at least one Papertrey product.

Fun technique. I love how you used the yarn!

Great video, it sort of made me relax about splatters. I always get too nervous to splatter a project that I have spent a lot of time creating. Maybe now it will be OK. Thank you for the inspiration.

I love splatter because it is just so happy!

The yarn idea looks fun- have to try that.

I have a fear of spattering on a stamped card but I think, with the techniques you used, I might just loosen up! TY!

My grandpa and uncles were all painters…painters of buildings, that is. Pollock’s shoes are exactly what my uncle’s shoes looked like. Although, they may have argued they were working!! Lolol!! I also remember a movie with Doris Day, I think, and an artist who probably was mimicking Pollock. He was definitely ahead of his time. But oh, what fun! I hope to try this out, but it probably won’t be before Tuesday morning! I love all of the cards I’ve seen so far! Great technique!!

I knew about many of these techniques, but picked up some new ideas as well (especially the yarn). I loved your big red splats, but was unable to replicate them…I’ll keep trying though!

Such a great explanation of the different ways to create drips and splatters, Lizzie! It’s a rainy day here, but on the next sunny day I can’t wait to take my project outside to splatter paint with joy! ♡

Lizzie your tutorial was FUN, so much FUN. It is not something I would normally do but you explained it so well and I just went for it and had a blast. Thank you.

I just can’t get over how that yarn soaked, dropped and dragged a bit looks. Thanks so much!

I had so much fun with this one. But I’ve got SUCH a royal velvet thumb from squeezing out a big drop from the brush lol. I totally heeded your advice about splatters and used a 12 x 12 cellophane envelope to cover my ipad (so it was save and sound).

This was so much fun! I really enjoyed playing with the inks and making the splatters.
