Asking who my most inspiring teacher was is like asking who my favorite kid is. My kindergarden teacher who snuck me over to the first and second grade classrooms to get me better books. My first grade teacher who helped me realize being smart wasn’t a bad thing (you’d have to understand the school and environment). My third grade teacher who let me take the fourth grade math book home because it was ok to want to learn more. My fifth grade teacher who helped me find my way in a new, and very different, school. My middle school civics teacher who encouraged my independent thinking. My high school math teacher who knew what I needed to learn…there really is a right way to take math notes! My high school ROTC instructor who taught me how a tree must bend to survive a storm, and that we are just like the trees. This is a wonderful release & the projects this week were all fantastic. I had three exceptional teachers, but my favorite was Mrs. Winnie Wolfe. She was known as being the toughest & meanest teacher in the school & I think I actually cried when I found out I got her for my 5th grade year. That would have to be Mr. Keys when I was in 6th grade. He was the first male teacher I had, and he let girls who were interested play basketball intramurals along with the boys. Which during the late 60s on a military base overseas (which was kind of like living in the 50s), was nothing short of awesome. To give a sense of perspective, girls were only allowed to wear pants to school about 3 times a year. He was also a great math teacher : ).

My senior English teacher, Mr. Lentz, taught me to quit focusing on grades and start focusing on my love of learning. Mid-year, after I’d turned in an excellent paper on Milton, he gave me an A for the rest of the year and then said, “Now, write like this for something other than the grade.” His faith in my ability completely shifted the focus of my education, and I can’t thank him enough for that blessing that carried me through college, graduate school, and every day since!

She truly embodies the title of “Educator” and is able to inspire all types of students through her love of Economics, Political Science and American Government. Mr. Frankel, my 10th grade Distribution teacher. He saw potential in me that I didn’t see in myself. He recommended me to his friend who owned a business. I was hired on the spot and had a good paying part-time job! I never would have gone out on my own to look for a job at that time because I didn’t think I had it in me.

Well, it was a long time ago, and I don’t remember her name, but one of my Home Ec teachers spent the whole year teaching us how to read stitching instructions and making samples. I hated it. I wanted to make something. But it has served me well for the rest of my life. Wish I could thank her.

This one is easy for me. It was Mrs. Fender who was a HS biology teacher. She was great for many reasons. However, she used a technique that made you think. She would introduce a topic and then ask questions at the end of class about that topic. She wouldn’t give the answer – just the questions. It challenged you to figure it out for yourself. The next day, another question – and so it went until the class came up with the answers themselves.

It would be my 5th grade teacher. I had just moved to a big city from a small little town from another state. The kids teased me a lot because my accent was different from theirs. I missed a lot of school because I would make myself sick from worrying and not wanting to go to school and deal with the teasing. She was so kind to me and protected me. Apparently one day she had a long talk with the kids in my class and they never teased me after that day. I believe she knew what it was like to be teased, as she had a cleft palette and some of the kids even made fun of her. I love that lady so much, and I will never forget her!

easy- Mrs. Beard, my 3rd grade teacher. She would read to us, & tell personal stories from her childhood, which must have been around 1915-1920. I remember she said she waited until the last minute to write her paper- on a Sunday she slipped to her room & finished it. When her parents learned that she was working on a Sunday (it was against the rules), the paper was destroyed. Isn’t it funny how little things stick with us? I’m older than she was when she taught me. I loved her. She was one who listened, & was so kind to all of us.

My most beloved teacher was Mrs. Edwards, who taught us first AND second grade. This was in the late 50’s when teachers didn’t “loop” classes like they do now. She loved our whole class so much that she requested to teach us second grade, which she was allowed to do. She wanted to continue on with third grade, but the administrators wouldn’t allow her to do that. She was the most loving person; we all loved her as much as she loved us.
jbarber@seligenterprises.com says
The teacher who inspired me most was the one everyone would least expect. He was my American History teacher and no one wanted to take his class. I elected to take it with some other friends during the summer and we learned so much about him. He turned out to be a funny, smart man. I learned two valuable lessons that summer. 1. Don’t judge a book by its cover, and 2. Don’t listen to what others say about a person. Give yourself permission to discover that each of us adds value to our world.

I was very fortunate to have many teachers that inspired me and were somehow in each their own unique way encouraging to me. I would definitely say, there was one who supported me and gave me confidence more than any and that would be my 9th grade math teacher. Without his support, math would have failed me. I also must have adored my very first teacher (Kindergarten), as I have always remembered her, even though I remember no specifics about her. I believe she is why, I became an Early Childhood teacher.

Lisa says
My 2nd grade teacher, Mrs. Tansey, was extremely kind. She treated each child with gentleness and individual attention. Here concern for others showed in many ways. I feel lucky to have had many great teachers growing up, but two in particular come to mind. First my 2nd grade teacher, Mrs. Sandifer who I had the honor of getting to return to her class as an assistant my senior year in high school. The second teacher who inspired me was my junior high speech and drama teacher, Mrs. Cooper. To this day, I have no idea what inspired me, an incredibly shy teenager, to sign up for class that required me to give speeches in front of people on a regular basis, but she cracked my shell and made me a much more confident woman.

My most important and inspiring teacher was my third-grade teacher, Miss Rogers. To me, she was a big, imposing, gigantic-in-all-ways person — and she taught me a valuable lesson. I was a good kid but didn’t really apply myself. I still have an essay she graded and wrote to my parents on the top that it was the third time she made me rewrite it because my handwriting was sloppy. She let me follow my own interests in class and read about whatever subject I was interested in, but forced me to do the work right. Every time someone compliments me on my handwriting, more than 40 years later, I thank Miss Rogers.

Wow….I would have to say my college history professor. I can see him clear as day, but his name completely escapes me. He not only was an excellent teacher of history, but he actually took the time to help the class learn HOW to study, especially helpful with history. He was so very charismatic and full of life. Very inspirational on living life too the fullest…..not let a moment go to waste on petty “stuff”. Best class I ever took.
Carol says
My daughter’s dance teacher, Miss Hannah, has really touched a spot in my heart. She invites the kids in early and they sit on the floor and chat about their days. She has taken the time to really get to know the kids. Sometimes we get so caught up in what needs to be done or taught that we fail to take the time to show those around us how important they are for just being themselves. I am inspired to be more like Miss Hannah!
Jessica Kerr says
Without hesitation, it is my 12th Grade Advanced Placement English teacher, Mrs. Kepley. She had faith in me when I didn’t have faith in myself.
My class was scheduled to take a CLEP exam (College Level Examination Program)- many colleges and universities grant college credits for passing it. I had refused to even take the registration form home to my parents because I felt there was no way I would achieve a passing score. The registration fee was costly, and I feared my father would be furious if I failed.
On the final day of registration, Mrs. Kepley asked to speak with me privately after class – she wanted to know why I hadn’t signed up. At first I made up a bunch of lame excuses, but she pressed me until I told the truth. After she heard me out, she hugged me, smiled and offered me a deal. If I took the test and failed, she would personally provide me with a refund of the registration costs. It seemed I had nothing to lose, so I reluctantly accepted. Test day came, and I passed with flying colors!

Grace McCourt. She was my 3rd and 4th grade teacher and made each student in her classroom feel like they were special, important and capable. I loved her and was thrilled when she changed grade levels so we got to experience the positive attitudes for two years! My third grade teacher, Ms. Zacher, sparked my interest in writing. She was the first teacher to include creative assignments that went beyond the traditional worksheets and practice tasks that were boring and repetitive for me. She loved art, music, and creative writing and brought those passions to daily classroom life. My world opened wide that year. I was lucky to have many dedicated teachers over the years, all of whom I remember fondly and am so grateful for the lasting impressions that still resonate with me today. When I became a teacher, their influence led the way. I also worked with so many wonderful teachers who were my mentors and friends when I tried to bring my best to the students in my classroom. Teachers leave lasting impressions. I never forget that and can’t wait to send out special Thank You gifts with this month’s release.

For me it was my high school algebra teacher in my freshman year. She worked us hard but was upbeat, always positive and full of joy which made for a happy classroom. It is easy to do well in an environment like that! I am having a hard time coming up with her name-she was a nun, they changed from traditional “not their own name” name to their own names and then she left the convent and married. Might have to go dig out that yearbook…..

When I started high school, we had just moved from California to a tiny town in upstate New York near the Canadian border. Peru NY may have been small, but Peru Central School had the best teachers I had ever known. Mr. Greenwood for English encouraged and nurtured by poetry and writing. Mrs. Anderson, Geometry, taught me the basics in some mnemonics I’ll never forget (to my children’s and grandchildren’s dismay). Mr. Blanchard, Earth Science, taught me the Moh’s hardness scale for rocks, and a lifelong love of the beauty of the earth. And Mr. Bourgeois taught history, instilling in me the desire to learn about ancient cultures and languages. Thanks to all of them I am a pretty well-rounded person today, and I have never stopped pursuing knowledge.

My senior year English teacher, Bro. Alfred, was just amazing. He was in his 50-something year of teacher and had such a love for literature that he made even Chaucer riveting! Favorite teacher – easy – Tremaine Spencer, my high school Art teacher back in 1960. I took art for four years as an elective and he talked to us like a friend but still maintained control of the class. He also got many of us to never smoke by doing something he would be fired for today. Everyone cool smoked back then and we had a smoking tree outside to congregate around. My first year in art, he asked who had not started smoking and then had us come into his office. He gave each of us a cigarette and a piece of white paper. He said inhale once from the cigarette then blow out the smoke. Then he said to hold the paper up to our mouth and exhale deeply onto the paper. We were all amazed at the brown film that our breath left after one “drag”. He said this is addictive, will coat your lungs and you can die. Then took the cigarettes back and went back to the classroom, never saying anything again about it. After that, we never thought it was cool to smoke and I’m so thankful that he cared more for us than following protocol. It was the #1 best thing I learned in all my high school years! He also was an awesome art teacher!!!!

I can’t think of any one teacher who influenced me in school – but there are several over the years that I am thankful for! Specifically my French Teacher instilled a love of French and visions of Paris, one of my history teachers taught about Harriet Tubman and the Underground Railroad, black history that was virtually non-existent in the late 50’s, early 60’s, and my art teacher who allowed me to spend hours teaching myself to weave on an old loom in the CLOSET of the art department.

In junior high I had a science teacher, Mr Pugmire. He inspired me to become a science teacher. At that time women didn’t do the hard sciences. I was the ONLY girl in my physics class in college. I was one of maybe 3 girls in Invertebrate Zoology. Everybody seemed to be pre-med and pre-dental in the biological sciences. A few of us aspired to be teachers. Because of Mr Pugmire I had a great career as a math and science teacher at a local high school and I hope I inspired a few more kids along the way…

Hands down, my most influential teacher was Ms. Sue Neeb. She encouraged all of my wacky ideas, insisting that they weren’t wacky, but genius in disguise. (That includes the prom dress made out of duct tape!) She was my Brit Lit teacher, but more than that, she turned out to be a great friend. She let me eat lunch in her classroom so a group of us could watch British movies and practice our horrible accents. (Even though she called Monty Python mindless drivel…) She always encouraged our creativity and helped us start to think “outside the box”. If it weren’t for her, I wouldn’t be nearly as creative as I am today. I’m truly grateful!

Mrs. Dixon was my most inspirational teacher, who passed away last year. She was one of the first persons who taught me to love myself and everything God created me to be. She taught our Home Economics sewing class and as young girls we would sew clothing for ourselves and sometimes we would complain because the outfit did not fit our bodies right and needed to be adjusted to fit nicely. In high school I was VERY skinny and tall with NO curves at all! 🙂 Some of my classmates were shapely & curvy and I wanted that…LoL!
But Mrs. Dixon showed and taught me how to appreciate who I was and she assured me that one day I would have ALL OF THAT! Well, she was absolutely right! I didn’t go to a traditional school; we were self taught mostly, so the teachers were there just to help, not really to teach. Really, each and every one of them is inspiring because it was a very small Christian school and they didn’t get paid very much (most were probably volunteers). It was more of a ministry to them than a job. And they all really cared about the students–that’s why each and every one of them was there: for us.

That is such a good question, I was just talking about teachers that were not inspirational and could easily identify them. Influential is much harder to come up with one unfortunately. But I think I would have to say my high school biology teach, not that he did anything amazing in the class room but that he was just easy to relate to compared to teachers that really tried to belittle students.
But the most influential teacher that I have had the horor of knowing was not one of my teachers but one of my daughters. I actually went to high school with her, she was just a year older then myself. She was my daughters 7th grade algebra teacher. She was so kind and supportive. My daughter was in 7th grade when I had a stroke and I remember her being so supportive of Ashlyn and just kind and helpful. Sitting down with her for a parents teacher conference was like a big weight being lifted from my shoulders. Unfortunately a few years later she died from cancer leaving behind two young sons and her husband that she was with all thru high school.

My favorite teacher was Mr Fowle, he had Kore faith in me then I did in myself. And Mr. Murray, the accounting professor I had in grad school, who was a wonderful mentor; despite my dislike for his subject he succeeded in making it engaging and clear, and when I ran I to personal difficulties he went to bat for me, with the school, the Dean and everyone else. Fabulous people, both of them. And now that I am thinking of them, I will be making cards to send with an acknowledgment of how much they have meant to me.

Mrs. Rose West, my high school art teacher. Oh my word, she helped me explore my creativity in so many ways, always trying something new, encouraging me. SHE had chosen one of MY pieces to put in the gallery. She gave me the boost that validated my creativity in my own eyes.

My 10th grade English teacher was able to use his dry sense of humor (and a bit of sarcasm) to keep a room full of restless 15/16-year-olds from being bored with what could easily be a dry subject. Hi Nichole,
My most inspirational teacher was Mrs. García, she was my Spanish Literature teacher and she inspired me the love for reading specially Don Quijote which was a most read for my last year. She would always make the class interesting and made a point to always be available for us to talk to her about anything.
Another valuable lesson that she thought me was not to cheat, you see I was an A+ student, but on this particular exam I reluctantly let the classmate behind me see my paper, and as she was passing by she whisper in my ear, I am going to discount 15 points from your exam and want to see you after class is over. Since I always got 100% that placed me with an 85% or B which hurt me to no avail and then I had to explain to my mother why, but most of all I was hurt by the look of disappointment in her eyes. After the class was over I tried to defend myself telling her that I was not the one cheating, to which she replied, “But you let someone get advantage of your knowledge and hard work which is worst, so from now on remember this on your path trough this life”. And that my friends was such an “AHA” moment for me, that I took it to heart till today.
Cariños,
María Alba
