Being a part of a military family, home means something different for me than most other people. We have moved 3 times in the last 3 1/2 years so no one permanent place is “home”. Home to me is wherever my husband, 1 year old daughter, my dog, and I lay our heads at night, eat dinner, and have family time. Florida and Mississippi have been ‘home’, a hotel room was our home for 2 weeks this past summer while we house-hunted, and now our new house is our home. Being a retired military family, home meant a lot of different things over the 20 years my husband was in the Navy. Our “back home” is Milwaukee, WI, where we both grew up (and met on a Milwaukee Public city bus at the age of 15!) and also where the majority of both of our families still live.
My husband was stationed in Norfolk, VA his entire career and all three of our children were born and raised here, so to us home is now here in VA. We have adopted many family members since living here to help us feel more at home, like Grama Betty (an 86 year old sweet lady/friend from church; and also a stamping buddy!) Friends can really make you feel at home as much as family many times, no matter where you may be. We are very thankful for those friends!

Home, to me right now, is a feeling of contentment regardless of whether I have a lot or a little. It is the comfort of having my wonderful husband, whom I love more than life, asleep in our room, snoring away. I wouldn’t trade that snore for a million dollars. 364 days a year, home is where I veg out and get my “beauty sleep” every nite. We just moved our family for the 3rd time in 7 years. I know for some that’s not a lot, but considering our family size and that each move also involves moving my business, it’s pretty daunting. Our last move was 3 months ago and yet each place almost instantly feels like home. So I’d have to say that Home really is where my family is. Since our last move, my older step kids have only been here twice together. One’s now living solely with her mom and the other is in his first year of college. It was on those two days when they were here did I really feel like our family was complete and I was so glad everyone was Home!

And Melissa’s new stamp set has a lot of potential for expressing frosting. 🙂

Over the years, “home” has meant many different things to me. When I was a young girl, of course, “home” was wherever my parents were. They worked so hard to give my brother and I a happy life and made our home warm and loving. When I went away to school, “home” still seemed to be back where my family lived, until I met my future husband, who showed me that “home” means love and respect and support through thick and thin. We moved 3000 miles away from our families, which meant that we needed to make “home” wherever we were. Then we had a baby, and now “home” is the little arms that reach for me in the morning and the sweet kisses and hugs at night. Thank you for making me think again about what “home” means to me…I’ve gone on and on, but I think that’s a good thing.

Home is wherever my family is – all together, making happy memories and enjoying each other’s company. It doesn’t have to be at our house – it might be at the beach or on a hike in the rain forest – but it’s wherever we happen to be when we’re together.

Home for me has changed a lot in the last year and a half for me. Two major moves, one being to a town away from all of my family and friends, from a 39 year hometown I swore I’d never leave. But it has taught me that home is in my heart. It is in every phone call, every card and letter, every email and Skype session with my loved ones. It is in me not where I hang my hat. :’) And someday home will be wraped in the loving arms of my Savior. Merry Christmas all!!!

Home for me is wherever my family is. Our oldest son is a sophomore in college, and it’s still odd not having him here every day. I understand now why “older” people treasure the holidays so much. It’s because their family is all together, and it’s the only time they feel entirely complete. Get a little age on ya, and you start to REALLY understand these things.
Heather says
