Today is the day I have been waiting for! I've spent nearly three months busting at the seams to spread the word about the latest and greatest innovation from Papertrey Ink! This my friends, is a momentous occasion! Just the beginning of many exciting things to come with the announcement of our new Button Bits collection!
It's no secret that I love buttons. REALLY love them. I like to look at them sitting in their jars all lined up. I love the homespun feel they add to a project when they are hand-stitched in place. I love the variety of textures shapes & sizes. My passion for buttons paired with this beloved book from my childhood inspired the entire concept behind Button Bits.
In the book, Ed Emberley shows children how to turn their fingerprints into people, animals, flowers and all sorts of fun things. (It's a fantastic series now and I HIGHLY recommend it for any of you that have little ones!) I recently stumbled across some of my thumbprint art from when I was a child and it got me to thinking how fun it would be to have a stamp set that allowed you to apply the same concepts to buttons.
Details.
- Everyday Button Bits is the first of many sets that will eventually make up the Button Bits Collection.
- Everyday Button Bits will be available July 15th for the price of $24.
- It contains 11 images that can be completed with the addition of buttons or circle punches, along with 17 complimentary sentiments.
I thought I would start with one of the most fun images in the set, and that is of this little birdie. I know, I know. You're probably thinking, "THAT does NOT look like a bird!"
Trust me. Read on for more!
The bird body is stamped in Noir Black ink onto Stamper's Select White cardstock. This would be a good time to mention that there are TWO of these little guys in this set; one large and one small. You can use them separately, as I am here, or they can be friends on a card cover together.
Here is the original bird body with the addition of a stamped grass image from the set. The grass image can be paired with a number of different images in the set to help *ground* them. I've also selected a Melon Berry button for his body. Such a great use for the larger Vintage Buttons that you all are always inquiring about! I simply used Glue Dots to adhere my button in place.
I wanted to make him a little eye (he needs to be able to see!) and decided it would be clever to add a french knot with black embroidery floss to the upper right button hole.
(click on the photo above for a larger view)
There are two wing choices for each of the birds, stripes or polka dots. The wings are separate stamps so that you are able to cut them out and layer them on top of the button. They are easy to adhere with Glue Dots.
And something new I've been playing around with. Remember my PTI/DMC coordinating embroidery floss chart (CLICK HERE if you missed it the first go round!) ? I've started using the floss as I would ribbon and wrapping it around my card fronts. I love the tiny punch of color it adds. Quite a different effect when compared to wider ribbons.
And how about that cute little sentiment? I happened to be on the phone with my dear friend Dawn when I was finishing up this set and she thought that I should add this, since it is one of her favorite phrases. I think it pairs so well with this image too!
How about an introduction to another image from this set? This Button Bits image is designed to be used as a topiary base. I stamped it in Dark Chocolate onto Rustic Cream cardstock.
One of the fun things about this set is getting to dig through all your Vintage Buttons to find the *perfect* ones for your project at hand! Notice that I trimmed down the topiary base and added Background Basics: Text Style with Chamomile Tea Dye ink as a background. I also inked the edges with our Vintage Tea Dye Duo.
If you are wanting to stitch the buttons directly in place, the best way to start is to position them exactly where you would like and pierce through the button holes and therefore down through the paper. Having a foam mat or mousepad underneath your cardstock will be a huge help.
Here's a little tip. Whenever I do any stitching I like to secure the ends to the back of my image with Scotch tape. It's not as bulky as a knot and I know it won't pull back through while I am working. If you don't do this already, you totally need make the switch!
Here are my buttons stitched perfectly in place!
I felt like I had quite a bit of dead space around the topiary, so I decided to stamp the vine image from Heather's Beyond Basic Borders set on either side of the focal point block. I LOVE the way it turned out and the ol' wheels are already turning as to what other applications this could have!
(click on the photo above for a larger view)
The finished card. I matted the focal point topiary with Dark Chocolate cardstock and left a little bit of extra height at the top to trim with pinking shears. The look kind of reminded me of an old merchandise tag of sorts.
I ended up stamping the topiary base a second time and cutting out the pot portion. I adhered it to the existing one on the card cover with foam tape. I found that the project needed this to balance the sentiment strip at the bottom that was also adhered with foam tape.
For the pleating underneath the sentiment strip, I simply stitched Dark Chocolate Grosgrain ribbon into a random pleated border. This was achieved by folding the ribbon back and forth as I sewed down the length of the card front. I chose to stitch it like this so it would stay in place where as adhesive may not have held as well with all those layers.
I tied a bit of Rustic Jute Button Twine around the end of the sentiment strip and finished it off with a tiny little bow.
One more quick little card for you, using yet another one of the many image in Everyday Button Bits. I started with my background treatment, which I like to call "Half & Half". I do this technique a lot, especially when I need to change things up from my standard same-old backgrounds. All you do is select two different background stamps and stamp one half of your card front with each. I used Versamark ink on Scarlet Jewel cardstock for my sample here.
(click on the photo above for a larger view)
The cherry stem & leaves is one of my favorites from the set (you may remember it from the sneak peek earlier this week). I stamped them with Spring Moss ink onto some cotton fabric cardstock I made. I've make several sheets of this at once by cutting fabric into 8,5 x 11" pieces and adhering it to white cardstock using Heat n' Bond.
All I had left to do was add the sentiment with Noir Black ink followed by stitching two Scarlet Jewel Buttons in place to represent the cherries. A little stitching with the sewing machine around the perimeter followed by a trim with my pinking shears did just the trick. SO fun!
I've recruited the entire design team to help me showcase Everyday Button Bits to the fullest! Be sure to stop by each blog and see how they used the different pieces to create their own little masterpieces!

Oh! I can’t wait to see what all you come up with!
Nancy Gagnon says
I absolutely ADORE this set! It definitely made me smile! The cherries really stood out for me, but all the images have great potential! Maybe a set with flourishes that would incorporate buttons would be fun!

I absolutely love love love this PTI stamp set and the whole Button Bits concept – I am so excited that there’s actually going to be a whole series of Button Bits stamp sets!!! I have one of those fingerprint drawing books as well and always loved it.
The cherries and the trees and apples are particularly adorable…what about snowmen? Or Christmas ornaments for those fancy hard to use buttons??? Oooh I can’t wait to see what else is ahead and this is a must have stamp set. Plus I adore buttons, I have a terrible weakness for them!
Great job Nichole!!!
Belinda says
Just when I think there is nothing else new that could possibly be created, you come up with another brilliant, unique idea! Wow!
Sharon says
Love the topiary idea and everything about the cherries card!
You could go nuts on the fruit theme apples, lemons, oranges etc. but by the look of some of the samples, you might be on to that already.
You could use the topiary stamp as the trunk of a Christmas tree with New Leaf or Ripe Avocado buttons making the “tree” with stamped or bead baubles in amongst them. then there is button tree ornaments… A Christmas button set is a must! – Maybe with a special Christmas selection of vintage buttons – the greens and the reds mixed together in a pack.
How about a Halloween set released with some darker orangey vintage buttons – who wouldn’t LOVE button pumpkins! Button heads for witches and ghosts??
You could also do Mr & Mrs Button and Junior Buttons with buttons for heads or bodies of a family.
I think I talk to much….
Shirley K. says
Cute! I keep seeing stamps I want to buy!
Abby V says
I love that book too! I need to get that for my kids! Anyway…love the new set! It is ADORABLE!! I can see my kids doing projects with this set!

What an absolutely AMAZING set! LOVE, LOVE, LOVE it!!
I love all kinds of buttons, which began when I played with my Grandmother’s buttons as a child. I remember sitting on her white chenille bedspread, dumping the whole button tin out and playing for hours while she sewed.
With this new set, I now have more reasons to play with buttons. Gotta have it!!!
My mind is whirling…how about a holiday Button Bits set with christmas ornaments & snowmen or a halloween set with a spider and a cat. I also think you could make button fish, similar to the birds, but with fins, a tail and maybe fish lips. One last thought would be button bugs, like a caterpillar or ants.
Kim says

Pretty dresses and shirts and jackets and jeans, all of which could be perfectly accented by the smaller buttons, or even ballgown style dresses made from multiple buttons for the skirt!

I Love all the Thumbprint books. I used it in the Kindergarten class to make end of the year gifts. Each child would pick out one design (butterfly, catterpillar, sun, etc.),stamp their thumbprint on a small terra cotta pot with acrylic ink, and draw the design with a sharpie pen. Lastly, fill the pot with a flower and dirt…instant gift any parent would LOVE.

I would love to see a holiday button bit set. Oh the possibilities for sets are endless–I’m so excited. I love the topiary that you created as well as the cherries. I can’t really explain how excited I am about this set (and, frankly, I may make like Ed Emberley and employ my thumbs on occasion…just for the fun of it).

Buttons for owl eyes, or just plain circles/scallops with patterns. I think I could go on all day. Thanks for this wonderful set and chance to win!!!!

I am almost speechless at the creativity that flows from you each month. This set is genius.
Chery Bolton says
So cute! Just an idea for sewing on buttons. The idea to use tape is good, but I use a technique that doesn’t require tape or knots and is less bulky than both. Start with your floss or thread twice as long as you would normally use. Fold it in half meeting both ends together and creating a “loop” at the bottom. Thread the needle with the cut ends. Starting from the back of your project pull your needle through project careful not pull thread all the way through, leaving the “loop” on the back. Then insert your needle from the front of the project to the back, sliping the needle through the “loop” voila, your thread holds itself! Now just sew as normal. When finished slip your needle under all the stiching on back of project and snip off your excess thread. The previous stiches will hold the tread in place! No knots no tape and no bulk.
Chery Bolton
Mary Ann says

What fun! I love this set and all the possibilites it has. I would love to see insect pieces to go with it, butterfly wings, bee and fly wings. Oh, and catterpillar feet would be adorable! I remember doing fingerprint art as a kid. I do it with my two young boys. In fact we just made a frog book 2 weeks ago (the boys were into frogs then…now we’re onto bats). Anyway, on each page we stamped a number and then they stamped their finger print onto the page and drew on wings to look like flies. So if it was 4, they stamped their finger 4 times and we read it as “the frog ate 4 flies”, etc. etc. Thanks for sharing all your great projects.

colleen says
I LOVE how scrumptious the Papertrey buttons are and how they lend a heartwarming feeling to paper projects. This button bits concept is brilliant. I know there are many Christmas images that could use buttons (like wreaths, snowmen, santas, Christmas cookies, etc.) and I think a whimsical animal set (with baby animals included too) and a zoo animal set would be great also. I imagine that Nichole could even make bugs look cute (think multi-buttoned caterpillars, butterflies with 2 buttons for each wing, large and small ladybugs, ants). And I think a set combining stylings of your wonderful Tea for Two set with buttons as the teapot ‘bellies’ but with different teapot spouts, bases, handles and lids (shoot, I would love a set like that with Nichole designing all different bellies right with the spouts, lids , handles, and bases – a “Teapots through the Years” (from simple to formal, classic to contemporary, Victorian to modern, etc) and “Teapots from around the World”). And I have to say I love all of the images you’ve shown so far from Everyday Button Bits but especially those gorgeous (or as my 4 yr old daughter says “georgeous”) cherries! She and I would absolutely be in heaven if we owned a bag of each color of Papertrey buttons!
Jessica Canham says

Every release I am amazed and this time is no different. What an inspiring idea! This set (as is lots of your others) would be an incredible versatile addition to everyoneâs stamp collection. You mentioned using not only buttons but circle punches. What about using the mini circle images to add texture/interest to those punches, e.g. Background basics â spots and dots, Iâm thinking wheels with spokes on them! The list and the imagination goes on and on! Well done Nichole and Papertrey team.

I immediatly thought os the thumb prints that we used years ago when I started reading this. Great idea. Our stamp group uses at least one button on our b’day cards to each other. I had asked one of the girls if she had used any of her new buttons and she replied ” she hadn’t found anyone “Button Worthy” yet. Thus our tradition was hatched. I made a friend a button bracelet, and she made me a wreathe and then I did a collage card of buttons, so just waiting to see what she is going to come up with next. Really enjoyed this blog TFS Hugs n’ Stuff, Lynne

Button Bits… What a great spinoff on an old favorite as well as the perfect avenue for using many of our vintage buttons. It’s also a set that children could use with some supervision (they could glue the buttons down)… I can picture halloween cards, valentine cards etc. etc. etc.!!!!

Love Ed Emberly and these stamps are a perfect way to emulate Ed! Also, I suppose I should actually USE all those buttons I have been hoarding and what better way. Big yes to the snowmen comment. Thanks for always having something so fresh and fun for us each month. However do you do it?

What a fun set! I immediately thought of wheels for a bike, trike and wagon. How about a winter set (ornaments, snowman, cookies), animal set (pig, bear, dog, cat), or a baby set (rattle, pacifier, baby face). The ideas are limitless! Can’t wait to see what else you make of this collection.

What a fantastic and versatile set of stamps!! Perfect for quick and simple projects, but also perfect for more time-consuming projects. I particularly love the pots with topiary buttons, and the buttons for flowers. And who doesn’t like playing with buttons?! Goodness, my head is spinning with ideas – a row of flowers/buttons along the bottom of a scrapbook page – or buttons for car wheels. I would be in button heaven if I won this!!
karen says
I would love a christmas set with this idea- christmas ornaments as the buttons, a wreath large enough to be the centerpiece on a card, a bowuet of flowers, how about a halloween set- punkins, bats, ets. I can’t wait to get this one!!
