Many of you may remember that back on October 11th, during this month’s countdown I mentioned having the opportunity to participate in my first ever television appearance.
I owe my good fortune to the owner of our local scrapbook store, Georgie Stimson. She graciously "mentioned" me after one of her recent appearances on the same program and piqued the host’s interest in Papertrey’s nugget stamps.
I’ll be honest. I was pretty nervous. I mean, really, who wouldn’t be?!?! I prepared extensively for the appearance, including creating many samples of what could be done with the nuggets. I also packed my supplies 2 or 3 times, just to be sure that I didn’t forget anything!
Georgie made the short road trip to Nashville with me, and I am SO glad she did. When going to a strange place for the first time, especially when that place is a News Station, you can’t help but feel intimidated! But with Georgie by my side, who knows all the ins and outs of the facility, she made me feel much more comfortable!
When we were first led into the room where we were going to be shooting, I was surprised at the size! It was a lot smaller then I expected. There was a cluster of cameras in the middle of the room, and the perimeter was dotted with the different platforms & tables used for the various segments that they filmed there. It was really very interesting to see all that in person!
We then got everything ready on the table I was designated, while getting briefed a little at the same time. It would be a 4 minute segment, DON"T look directly at the camera, feel free to embellish but stay on track. Meryl Rose, the host, helped lead me to figure out the best way to do our little segment. We ended up using Georgie’s suggestion of having Meryl do the actual stamping of the label when the time came.
So, it finally came time to film, the camera was rolling and Meryl did my little introduction. Everything went pretty well until the last two minutes of my 4 minute segment!
#1: I get the sniffles when I’m nervous.
Why should a LIVE television appearance be any different?!?! So there I am trying to answer the questions that Meryl asks of me, while trying to *sniff* *sniff* unnoticeably!
#2: THE KNOT.
So, #2, I didn’t really notice until I got home and actually watched myself on tv. (By the way, note to self, DO NOT watch yourself on tv. Your left with a MUCH better opinion of your appearance if it solely based on your actual experience, rather then visually reliving it! LOL!) Here I am, just having finished showing Meryl how to put the nuggets in the tin when I decide that it is a good idea to tie a piece of ribbon with a simple knot around the tin. Seems like an easy enough task, right? Well, apparently not in my case! For the FULL final 2 minutes of my appearance I am looking DOWN fiddling with this totally irrelevant knot! Meryl is asking me questions about Papertrey’s product line, I’m looking down, concentrating on my little ol’ knot. Meryl asks me about the other themes or holidays we offer the nugget stamps in, I’m still working on the knot. At this point, it didn’t even MATTER whether or not the knot was tied. I STILL looked down, fiddling with that KNOT! Oh, I could have kicked myself when I got home!
Overall, it was a really positive experience, I had fun, Learned a lot and I would definitely do it again if I were asked. Although, I would probably bring a project to present that didn’t require any KNOTS!!!
Edited to Add: If you would like to see the segment I did for Talk of the Town, you can go to their website HERE. Towards the right of the page is a Video on Demand box. Scroll down through about 25 or so items and you will come to "Making Halloween Candy Wrappers with Papertrey Ink". (It is directly below recipe #4059 for Hashbrown Casserole, which is divine might I add!)
K Ostvig says
I wish I could have seen it I am sure you did a wonderful job, i am sure I would have loved to have a knot to deal with, I would be way too nervous.
Amy (g33kgr1) says
Chalk it up to experience for when you are selling on HSN or QVC! Go for it! 🙂
Dawn says
Isn’t it funny how long 4 minutes seem? You are adorable and I am sure everyone said “Hey look at that youngster what a brilliant entrepenuer! It’s all good!
Caz says
lol you gave me a giggle this morning… I am sure you were great.
Funny, I didnt think I dfid anything when nervous but when I got married I kept blinking!! LOL loads of wedding pictures with me with my eyes shut, I can remember doing it but couldnt stop! Nearest I got to TV was I am in a layout in a book and my old boss did a tv segment using my layout as focus! LOL

You’re always your own worst critic! So I’m sure you did much better than you think! I know what you mean about not seeing yourself on TV, though; I did a commercial while in college and I would leave the room whenever it came on – never did see it! All my friends did, and their thoughts on it were much better than mine ever would have. Moral of the story? Just listen to us – we know you did phenomenally!
Janet says
Anyway someone could put the segment on YouTube? That would be really cool if we could all see it.
Misti says
How fun was that!!! I checked out the video and I thought you did a great job! Your “2 minute knot fiddling” really wasn’t 2 minutes!! The camera was busy checking out all of your goodies so it wasn’t so bad! That was a great opportunity for you!!
Ginna says
I think you are being way to hard on yourself.. If you hadn’t mentioned the knot I probably wouldn’t have thought to much of it. It definately didn’t seem that long. You did great!
Cris Anderson says
I think you did a super job! Like someone said before you are your worst critic.
Mendi says
Nicole,
I don’t know what you are worried about–you did fantastic! I didn’t hear you sniff at all and the way the cut the segment, you didn’t even look like you were looking down any more than necessary. I say great job!!!
Kacey says
I just watched it, and you are seriously being way too hard on yourself! You were GREAT! The camera wasn’t even on you, so if you were looking down we didn’t even know it 🙂 You were a natural!
Candi P says
I thought you did GREAT Nichole.
I just watched it and you did fantastic. You were just fine with the knot. You could tell you were finishing the project and that you still discussed the items. I liked that they showed your other projects while doing it. Also, every time you watch something like Carol Duvall it always seems like the bow/knot wont tie just right. I did not see any problem with your segment. You even got your PLUG in. Good for you. I wish I didn’t live so far away. I would come to see you.
Julie Brooks says
You did great!!! How fun!!
Mandy says
I watched and thought you were great, you didn’t fumble with the knot at all. The products looked really good too. Great Job!

I think you did great! The knot fiddling was not as noticeable as it seemed to you and I couldn’t even hear the sniffing! You seemed poised and really not nervous at all – what great exposure and lots of kudos to you Nicole, for being mom with a home-based business! Way to go!

Denise Rose says
That was great! I think you did an awesome job and I was so excited to get to watch it. Thanks for the link!
On another note, I made the Southwestern Chicken recipe you have on here under recipes the other night and it was so good! My husband doesn’t really like chicken much, so I always try to find recipes with flavors that he DOES like, and this was great. Thanks for sharing it and for you who have not tried it, you should!
Karen Johnson says
Nichole you did such a great job and all your ideas were so cute. Thanks for sharing the link.

Wendy Sue says
HI Nichole! You did a GREAT job!! I didn’t notice any sniffling AT ALL – and it honestly didn’t look like you were fiddling with the knot like you said…just tying it perfectly and the next time the camera was on you, you were looking up! And you look great!! Thanks for sharing your TV appearance with us! :o)
Christine Villacarlos says
Oh Nichole! You were awesome!!! That knot didn’t take too long at all! And I think you managed to answer Meryl’s questions really well! Didn’t hear any sniffling either!

Nichole!! I just watched your video, and first of all, you are incredible to share that with all of us!! Secondly, you were FANTASTIC!! You looked wonderfully composed, and my dear….professional cameramen are your friend — I couldn’t even tell that you were focused on that ribbon! As you took care of it, they shifted to a shot of your products and it all came out perfectly! You seemed completely at ease and very professional. I did NOT notice a single sniffle!!
I’ve been in public speaking situations, and it always seems worse to you than to those watching — you were absolutely wonderful and appeared very comfortable. Congratulations!!! Terrific….

I didn’t read all the comments left here, but I am sure everyone is saying the same thing. I didn’t think it was bad at all. Even after you pointed out the knot incident, I wasn’t distracted by it. As a viewer I was focused on the conversation. I think it was great and you did a wonderful job. What an amazing plug for your company! Great job!
Andrea Devisser says
Nichole, You were awesome. I just watched it, and just like a previous commenter said, the sniffles weren’t even noticable and neither was the length of time you fiddled with the knot. Keep your head up GF, you did a fantastic job!!
Kerry says
Just watched the clip. You did a great job! If you hadn’t said anything I never would have noticed you were even struggling with the knot. They panned over to your other finished products so it really wasn’t obvious.
Charlotte Gunderson says
I think it was great. Sometimes we’re our own worst critic. Your designs are so easy to use and they literally sell themselves. You go girl!
Jolene says
I think you did GREAT and you were just ADORABLE!!! I didn’t notice the sniffing at all and if you wouldn’t have said something about the ribbon tying, I would have never known the difference!
I just think that you sharing this video with us is so neat. I mean, it really makes you seem “real”. I’m not trying to say that you never are otherwise but this just makes you seem approachable and a real person! Not just a photo on a blog.
I know that isn’t coming out right but I hope you know what I mean!
HUGS!!!
Angie DiMeglio says

How cool! You were fantastic, no sniffles heard in Utah. Off to buy more papertrey stamps!

It must be true that you are your own worst critic because I didn’t see or hear any issues…even with you letting us know what they were. I thought you did an excellent job!
Jill Gardner says
You are WAY too hard on yourself…just as I would be if it were me. You looked so relaxed – not nervous at all. Fabulous job and, of course, the goodies that you took were as beautiful as your usual work. Thanks for sharing!
Viv (VivLyn) says
I can totally relate and I’ve never been in front of a TV–just put a few people in front of me and I’m a basket case. I’m sure no one watching the segment even noticed you and your knot! I hope it brings lots of business your way!!!

Just viewed the video. You are much harder on yourself than anyone else would be. I would not have even noticed any of the things you said had you not mentioned them here. Great job and congrats on the great publicity for your very great product!

I used to live in Nashville and watch the show. You did a great job..no worries. Best of luck.
Lorri Feidt says
Ah yes, we are our hardest critics. I did not even notice snif and knot (sounds like you could start a comedy routine!). Anyway I think you did just fine!
Susan B. says
Nicole, I just watched the clip and you did fine. I’m not kidding. I could not see anything wrong. Only you know how you felt, if you were nervous, it did not show.Nice job!
Clara says
I know that we are all our own worst critics, but I watched the movie and I promise that you weren’t as bad as you think! I didn’t notice any sniffing and you looking at the knot was not as bad as you think. I think it went beautifully!
Julie C. says
You did soooo great!!

I guess I didn’t realize that you were so close to Nashville! I just reserved spots for me and 2 of my friends to attend your November class! We are so excited!!!
Wendy Weixler says
Rock on, Nichole!! I went and watch the little segment and you did GREAT!! (The camera wasn’t even focused on your “knotty” problem for more than a few seconds, so I’m sure no one noticed! Great job!!
Sandra Correale says
I think you did great!
Debra says
Nichole, after reading your critique, I had to watch it. Well, the first time I didn’t see what you were talking about so I had to watch it again. By the way, I didn’t notice any sniffing. I finally figured out what you were talking about with the knot but all you did was tie the ribbon on the container, it wasn’t overdone. While you were tying the camera also panned to other products but you did an incredible job and looked very professional! I think you were fabulous!
Kimberly O. says
You did an awesome job! One good thing about the video online is that it was kind of choppy with the streaming so to ME, you didn’t seem to be looking down too much at all. 🙂
Great job!
Kimberly
Sara says
I think your spot was awesome and you did a fine job! Thanks for all of the great stamps and ideas.
Adriene says
Nichole, you did wonderful! I enjoyed watching your segment, and I’m linking this and the idea of the Avery label to my friend who is making a horrendous amount of nugget wrappers- with paper, by hand- cutting and sticking them on herself. (whoha, that’s a lot of work!)…
You did great!

I just watched the video and I thought you did great!
melanie aka Batgirl says
ok you have the cutest accent! lol you did awesome!
Ardyth says
Nichole – you are clearly your own harshest critic. It was hardly noticeable! Based on your comments I was expecting to have a good chuckle, but I kept waiting to notice that you were STILL tying – never happened! It was great to see you – I feel almost like I’ve met you now. You’re a great inspiration – please keep up the great work despite the rude people (who copy your work). Unfortunately, they’re always around – the good news is that most people aren’t like that! Have a great day!
Lisa-onestampinmama says
Niclole you are being too hard on yourself!! I think you did great!!
Keyser says
Nichole,
As you can tell everyone, including me, thinks you did a great job! Don’t be so hard on yourself! We always see “our own faults” and no one else does because they are too busy looking at our/your gifts. I loved the opportunity to put a voice with your face. Sounds kinda strange but when you read a blog it has no sound. Somewhat like when you read a book and you form a picture in your mind of what the characters would look like then they make a movie and it’s George Clooney (yum!). I digress, you were awesome and you better stock up on lots more stamps cause the word is spreading!!!!
Meli says
I think your tv spot was just great. You are so relatable! Also, your *Vicky Beckham* haircut looks just perfect on you. Keep up the wonderful work Nich….ALL of us love it. You’re a gem!

You were darling on there! You are definitely too hard on yourself…no way were you fiddling with the ribbon for 2 minutes. I barely noticed it. Great job…I love your stamps!

BYW, I lingered this AM and watched the pumpkin pie squares recipe clip and got that recipe!
Sorry to hear about the Creative FREEdom issue. That’s horrible. We so appreciate all the creative work you do to provide us with wonderful products and ideas.
Vicki Doyle says
Nichole! Stop being so hard on yourself! You did extremely well on your tv segment! By your desciption, I was expecting that scene from the movie Broadcast News where the newscaster has the flop sweats, KWIM? You looked very professional and poised. You should be proud of yourself! And the knotting of the ribbon looked very natural and kept you from looking right at the camera – I think you did a great job!
